1 Engine Grinding Noise problem of the 2004 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 01/25/2021

Car was parked on a Thursday, was running fine with no problems. Rained all weekend. Went to start it on Monday morning, produced a horrible grinding noise and would not start. Research shows that the cowl has allowed water to leak under the hood and puddle on the motor allowing it to seep into the intake and hydrolock the motor. Apparently this is a very common problem with this year make and model but nothing has been done to resolve it. Now I am without a running vehicle and can not afford to fix it or replace it.

2 Engine Grinding Noise problem of the 2012 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 11/07/2018

2012 Dodge Durango crew with 5. 7l hemi engine. 10/23/18 - vehicle through engine error code related to cylinder 8 misfire. Pulled the plugs and cylinder 8 plug was burnt. Since the last plug change mileage was unknown, I replaced all 16 spark plugs. Vehicle started and ran fine. Error code cleared and did not reapper. 11/7/18 - while driving at ~60mph throttle fluttered and vehicle then died. No check engine or warning lights illuminated. Coasted to the side of the road. Tried to re-start engine since no warnings were visible. Engine made grinding noise and seized. Determined by luther brookdale Dodge in brooklyn park that there is a hole in the block, engine is seized and the engine needs replacement. Mileage was 114,xxx. Safety issue is that vehicle died at highway speed, leading to a loss of power steering, and assisted braking ability. No warning lights illuminated on the dash so there was no visible indicator of engine failure.

3 Engine Grinding Noise problem of the 2017 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 08/04/2018

I was supposed to have had recall service completed on my vehicle July 23, 2017. A few days later, I started experience a banging noise and shaking of the car. I contacted service to schedule an appointment and no one returned my call. A little more than a week later on August 4th, while driving between 40 and 50 mph, the car started making a grinding noise, lost power, slowed down as it started to sputter. The sounds and feeling, reminded me of driving a manual car and having it in the wrong gear. I have taken the car in to three dealerships, five times now. Only to be told, no codes were found so nothing can be done. Dodge needs to train its mechanic how to diagnose cars without a code and listen to their customers.

4 Engine Grinding Noise problem of the 2018 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 06/09/2018

I have 3 major issues. 1 while driving the entire center consol electrical system has locked completely up, turning the air off and not allowing any change to the system until the vehicle is pulled over and shit off, continuing with electirical 2x's I've shut the car off and the radio would not turn off, until the battery was disconnected which reset the entire system. My second issue is when starting the vehicle there is almost a grinding noise associated with the start up. Third the car seemed to be stuck on cruise control but with enough time to push enough buttons and shift to neutral it came out of cruise, the car has 3000 miles on it and I pay'd almost 50 grand for a brand new vehicle and it continually has issues, is there/will there be a technology fix?.

5 Engine Grinding Noise problem of the 2004 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 07/10/2015

The contact owns a 2004 Dodge Durango. While the vehicle was parked, the power outlet in the center console started smoking. The contact and the passenger found the source of the smoke, pulled the panel off the center console, and noticed the outlet was on fire. The contact extinguished the fire. There were no injuries and a police report was not filed. On another occasion, the contact heard loud grinding noises coming from the engine. While driving 50 mph and without warning, the vehicle stalled. The vehicle was able to be restarted and driven to the contact's residence. Once home, the vehicle stalled. Upon further investigation, the contact stated that the spring separated from the engine and that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failures. The failure mileage was 135,000.

6 Engine Grinding Noise problem of the 2004 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 03/17/2015

The vehicle was purchased new back in March of 2005 and has been maintained at regular intervals. Recently when it rained a sputter was noticed and thought to be spark plug wires, which had been changed approximately 1 year prior. Then approximately one month ago we went to start the Durango and it would not start. At first it sounded like the starter grinding so I removed the starter and had it tested and it fine. I attempted to turn the engine over by the crankshaft bolt and the engine would not move. I removed the spark plugs and found that the #7 spark plug had ice on it. The cylinder was found to be full of ice. The following day the ice melted and the engine moved and ran. The truck drove fine with no issues after that. I did some research and found many complaints of the engine hydrolocking due to a failure in the cowl which allowed water to pour onto the engine. The complaints indicated that it was a known problem and that Chrysler had been advised of the issue but nothing was done about it. I then found that water was leaking past the cowl and the wiper arms. On March 17, 2015 the Durango again made the grinding noise when attempting to start. The #7 cylinder and the #8 cylinder had water in them. The vehicle had been sitting for approximately 4 days prior and it had rained while the vehicle was parked. The vehicle would not start with the starter and would not turn by hand when tried at the flywheel. The vehicle had not exhibited any issues prior to being parked and had not run since it was parked and did not turn over at all when we attempted to start it. The engine is believed to be seized and no longer usable.

7 Engine Grinding Noise problem of the 2004 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 04/09/2013

I was driving the vehicle on an interstate during a pretty heavy thunderstorm. I noticed that the vehicle was starting to hesitate and lose power. As I started to slow the vehicle down to pull over the engine quit at about 50 mph. Thankfully I was on a straight part of the road and without power I was able to guide the vehicle to the shoulder of the road with out an incident. After waiting out the storm to pass on the side of the interstate, with traffic flying by, I was able to get the vehicle restarted after some hesitation and drive it home. During the night the vehicle sat in the driveway while we had some pretty good rainfall in the area. The next morning I went and attempted to start the vehicle to go to work. The engine turned over, it started, followed by a grinding noise and then the motor quit and hasn’t started since. After having the vehicle looked over we have found that two of the cylinders had quite a bit of water in them which had appeared to hydro lock the engine. Dodge needs to be held responsible for this issue and stop pushing the blame and cost off on to the vehicle owners. This is a huge design flaw and safety issue.

8 Engine Grinding Noise problem of the 2001 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 07/01/2011

The contact owns a 2001 Dodge Durango. The contact stated that she heard a loud clunking and grinding noise coming from the vehicle and felt vibration when she accelerated. Also, the check engine warning light was illuminated and there was an evap control system leak. Neither the dealer nor the manufacturer were notified of the failure. The vehicle was taken to a private mechanic who informed the contact that the drive shaft failed and needed to be replaced. No repairs were performed. The current mileage was 131,000 and the approximate failure mileage was 127,000.

9 Engine Grinding Noise problem of the 2003 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 08/15/2005

Front suspension - drive train - locks - axle - power steering pump vehicle has had consistent front end grinding noise since 30,000 km's. Ball joints have been replaced, front axle spyder gears have been replaced. Previous 1998 Durango had same problem - fix was front wheel bearings. 2003 Durango - dealer says that it doesn't require replacement. Noise and grinding only happen at slow speed turns left or right. From stop to light acceleration to hard left or right turn, new noise from rear axle - limited slip unit now getting louder. Axle oil and limited slip additive have been replaced with factory Chrysler oil additive. Indicative of same problem with 1998 Durango that I had, when rear axle pinion bearing was heavily scored. In that incident the same maintenance was done, but repair was out of warranty by 3,000 km's and Chrysler only paid 50% of repair of $700. 00. Oil changes on complete drivetrain was $590. 00 (4x4 with skid plates). This appears to be a metal fatigue problem in combination with engineering specifications that are too wide in tolerances, which allows failure of components to compound problems and create longer term damaging results. Ever since Dodge trucks went to maintenance free front axle bearings (you can't pack bearings with grease), poor limited slip tolerances in rear axle, and transfer case that's electronically operated, the drivetrain and front suspension components have excessive loads and poor quality components. Both Durangos that I've owned have had 5 wheel alignments (constant pulling to the left) and no off road driving. Strictly highway and city driving. I purchased factory extended warranty on 2003 Durango which I highly recommend. So far, out of pocket expenses have been minimal, but Durango spends too much time in the shop and is very inconvenient to have serviced constantly. Never had issues with warranty parts or dealer not doing warranty recall work.

10 Engine Grinding Noise problem of the 2000 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 12/12/1999

Vehicle makes grinding noise. . . Chrysler unable to diagnose problem. Wheel bearing replaced, driveshaft replaced, motor mount shim machined and installed. . . To no avail. Chrysler now believes it could be the front differential. Chrysler is basically experimenting with vehicle in hopes that noise will go away. I have requested that the vehicle be returned to Chrysler (through vehicle buy back program). Long term reliability and safety of vehicle questionable at this time. Drivetrain has been determined to be cause of problem.
