Dodge Durango owners have reported 104 problems related to engine stall (under the engine and engine cooling category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Dodge Durango based on all problems reported for the Durango.
Engine stalling while low speed driving, when deceleration, while making a stop sign or waiting at a red light. This issue has occurred persistently in different occasions and settings. Although the majority of the times the vehicle's shutting off occurs frequently at low speed, it has happened while driving at a higher normal speed. Chrysler company does not have this issue listed on some vehicles of the same year 2005 that evidently shows certain defects, therefore, owners are immediately dismiss or ignored and left with a life threatening vehicle on their hands.

We own a 2013 Dodge Durango with 175,000 mile on it and has been a great vehicle up until it started losing power while driving. After having several mechanics trouble shoot the issue we found out the the engine was actually misfiring and because of a bad lifter. After our mechanic contacted our local dealership to find out that the lifter for the 5. 7 hemi engine is on backorder with no eta of when it will be in and being told that this is a very common issue. This tells me that there needs to be more investigated here, after doing some research it looks like this is a known issue with Dodges 5. 7 hemi engine not just in the Durango but in all of their vehicles and that other people have reported this issue but nothing has been done about this. This issue could have lead to a much bigger safety issue if the engine stalling would have happened and cause harm or death of my husband while driving this vehicle. Right now we are just fighting to recoup our costs for the repairs on a vehicle that we are still paying for.

Every 3 or 5 days, after starting the engine, it completely stops. All power is lost. In order for the engine to start again, I have to depress the ignition button and open up the driver side door! it seems like this is an electrical problem. I'm afraid the engine might stall while I'm driving the vehicle. Has there been a recall to address this problem? I bought the vehicle exactly one year again and this problem began exactly one month after I purchased it. June, 2018.
Engine stalling while driving, specially while taking a turn. This cause loss of electrical power in the car including the brakes. This has been hapenning in the last two years causing a big risk of losing my life in a crash. The car dealer autocentro told me that there is no recall for my car in this matter. This makes my car very dangerous and impossible to sell, I need help.

The vehicle stalls while driving (very intermittently). Does not log any engine codes and mainly happens on deceleration. But has happened at highway speeds when exiting the freeway and also at low speeds when coming to a stop sign. When the engine stalls you loose power steering and brakes but all of the electronics keep working radio, lights, etc. . . I have called Chrysler care opened a case, which they assisted in scheduling an appointment for the vehicle at the local Dodge dealer. The case was closed by Chrysler since the dealership could not duplicate the problem. We bought this vehicle with 50,000 miles on it and it now has 76,000 and has stalled on us several times I would say (12) over the 26,000 miles we have pout on it. If you google this complaint/problem with the 2011/2012 Durango it is widely known and a very serious issue to be ignoring, someone is going to be killed because of this.

The contact owns a 2012 Dodge Durango. While driving 60 mph, the engine stalled without warning. The contact pulled over to the side of the road, restarted the vehicle after a few seconds, and the vehicle returned to normal. The contact received notification of NHTSA campaign number: 17v435000 (electrical system). The parts to do the repair were unavailable. The contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The dealer (walser Chrysler Jeep Dodge ram, 314 mainstreet, hopkins, mn 55343) was contacted and confirmed that the parts would not be available until may of 2018. The manufacturer was contacted at 800-853-1403 and was not able to confirm when the parts were to become available. Case number: 32554257 was provided. The approximate failure mileage was 110,300. VIN tool confirms parts not available.
The car has an intermitent that during the transition from cold engine operation to warm engine if you take your foot off of the gas (to slow down for a traffic light or to make a turn) the engine will stall, losing power steering. It is intermittent in that it must be at a certain point in the warm up cycle. I am unable to let my daughter drive the car as she does not have the strength to control the car without power steering.
The contact owns a 2011 Dodge Durango. While driving 70 mph, the engine stalled without warning. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the transmission control module failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failure recurred. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 44,000. The VIN was not available.
Dodge Durango 2008 with hemi 5. 7 l engine stalls at low speeds after I fill up the gas tank. This happens every time I fill up the tank now. I have read on consumer forums that other Dodge trucks and car owners have also reported this problem. It is dangerous, as the car stalls without any warning. This happens multiple times after fillup and after driving 20 miles or so the problem goes away. It is very dangerous as my car has stalled in busy intersections and while taking yield turns. The vehicle has also stalled while driving on highway after gas fillup and as I tried to slow down. When I reported to the dealer, they said it is not covered under warranty.

My Durango has only 28,000 mi. Drove about 2 mi. For my pt and an hour later I could not get my Durango started after several attempts. Called a tow company and had my car towed to a licensed mechanic. After the vehicle sat for about 6 hours, the mechanic started the car and said he can not find anything wrong so take the car home. I went on line and found a website where people shared their experiences with their 2005 Durango and I am very, very afraid to drive my car now. They wrote that they have had experiences when the engine would stall while driving on the road. What is going on? no recall for this problem/phenomena?.
A valve seat in my cylinder head came off during normal engine operation causing total engine destruction. The valve seat (made of steel) dislodged itself and destroyed the aluminum head and the piston in that cylinder. This is a factory default common in these engines. I was driving down a busy road when the valve locked up, lost compression, causing my brakes to go out and my engine to stall. I had to pull off the road to avoid the car stopping in front of me. . This is a documented failure on 1999-2002 Chrysler- Jeep 4. 7l engines.

The vehicle was repaired. The VIN was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 14v634000 (electrical system). The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 105,000.
As I braked to park the Durango, the engine abruptly stalled. Not sure why it stalled, but I know there was a problem with the 2004-2005 Durangos where the engine would stall during sharp turns while braking.

After a rainstorm, I went to start my vehicle and it wouldn't turn over. Thinking it was the starter, I replaced the starter and vehicle still would not start. After manually rotating the engine back and forth a few times, the engine started but then had a very loud engine knock. The vehicle was not officially diagnosed by a mechanic but all indications are that it is engine rod failure due to hydrolock condition. This is supported by the idea that the engine would frequently stall during the rain and in the car wash, as many others have reported. It had progressively gotten worse over the course of a year until this happened. Vehicle was sold as-is for repair or engine replacement for fraction of retail value.

Driving with my family to church on rucker avenue in everett washington at a speed of approximately 35 miles per hour. The engine stalled and car lost power. Was able to safely pull to the side of the road. Same thing happened a week later while driving on colby avenue in everett. The car had been having difficulty starting, it would crank over but not start. On October 1'st I took the car to dwayne lanes in everett, they told they had fixed the problem. The car still did not start and the problem remains. Took the car back to dwayne lanes and informed them that the car was stalling while driving. They commented that the part was on back order and subject to a recall (p54/NHTSA 14v-530). Dwayne lanes advised that they did not know when the part would be in and suggested that I take the vehicle back and utilize it until the part came in. I informed dwayne lanes that I would not be driving a car that loses power at random times on public roads. I informed dwayne lanes that this would put my safety at risk as well as everyone else on the road. Dwayne lanes informed me that there is nothing they can do. The car has 32,000 miles on it, and is still under warranty. Have contacted Chrysler, tempe Dodge, and dwayne lanes, as well as insurance. No person will provide a loaner vehicle, or an estimate of when the car will become drivable again.

I was circling to the left around a build to park and doing about 5 mph when the engine stalled. It restarted immediately but stalled again as I turned right into a parking spot. Another stall happened in the afternoon as I was attempting to park straight into a parking spot. A fourth stall happened while I was stopped at a red light. With the fourth stall, I noticed that the tachometer suddenly dropped from about 700 rpm (where it usually idles) to about 300 rpm, hovered there for a moment and then stalled.

Every time I drive in the rain the engine stall and make a abrupt stop. I have numerous service done by the Dodge dealer and many amount of money spent on trying to correct this major problem. In good weather the SUV drive great it's only when it rain when this happens. This a major safety hazard especially when your on a major highway and cars are driving at high speed behind you and your car stop. Is the Dodge company waiting for people to die in order to correct this problem. I'm the original owner of this vehicle and always had the maintenance service done.
2011 Dodge Durango w/5. 7 liter engine stalled as I was turning onto the freeway on ramp. Pulled over and started right back up. Thought it was a fluke or I hit something. Stalling occurred again several times while slowing down and making turns. Happen once while my wife and daughter were going to store. She will not drive the car anymore. Went in for repairs several times with no real conclusion or repair being done. Finally went in after one of the stalls and by then the recall was coming out and the tipm and some wiring was replaced. Thought it was repaired when over the weekend it happened again as I was slowing for a stop sign with my wife & granddaughter in the car, then to me again 2 days later. We happen to live in a rural area so there is not a lot of traffic, thankfully. It is in dealership now (second week) and they are saying it needs new sparkplugs (which it does) but there is no way a engine should stall due to old sparkplugs. It's a disaster waiting to happen to anyone driving one of these. Everything up till this tune-up has been covered under warranty. It has stalled a total of around 8 times and all while slowing down and has been in dealership on and off for about a month total.

On any number of occasions (regardless of outside temperature or whether or not the vehicle was at normal operating temperature) while the vehicle is at a slow speed (in forward or reverse) the engine will stall without warning. With the loss of engine power comes the normal loss of power steering and power brakes. It appears to be most frequent when pulling into or out of a parking lot, stop sign, etc. The slow speeds are not inherently dangerous, except for the fact that stalling while in traffic and suddenly reducing speed or stopping puts myself and other motorist in jeopardy. When backing into a parking space, the loss of steering and braking capabilities create a risk of minor damage to other parked cars and could put a pedestrian at risk while being distracted and not being able to stop or steer as easily. There are no obvious sounds or engine or transmission noises or vibrations or anything to give warning that this could occur.
Engine stalling when raining or going through car wash, reading on other complaints about this make and model of truck doing the same thing and it ends up blowing the motor, something needs to be done about this.
Engine stall without warning. Lost control of the steering and brake very hard to apply.
While driving at approximately 55 mph the engine stalled. I was able to pull it off the road safely and put it into neutral. I then restarted the car and continued my drive. This same thing happened approximately 1 week later when I was traveling 35 mph. I again had to put the car in neutral and restart. This time I was not able to pull over since I was on a busy street. Luckily the car behind me did not hit me. One week later the engine went out (per another complaint that I sent in last night). Dodge has a problem with this engine and should be held accountable for replacements.
The contact owns a 2005 Dodge Durango. The contact stated while driving approximately 10 mph, the engine stalled without warning. The vehicle resumed normally when restarted but the failure recurred five times. On a separate occasion, the transmission shifted into fwd independently while traveling between 35-40 mph. The vehicle had not been diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the problem. The failure mileage was 110,000. The VIN was unavailable.
2011 Dodge Durango began to not start. Just as others. . Had to try starting and would finally turn over. After a visit to dealer, where no diagnosis codes showed up. . And no warning system lights were on, we took home. Continued to do this for next week, even stalled while on road while going 50 mph, and at a stoplight. Big safety issue here as could have got rearended w/a 3yr in car. Enough. . . Back to Dodge dealer, towed this time cause wouldn't start at all. It has been at dealer for 2 weeks presently. Have begun to fight chysler/Dodge as it should be covered by warranty even though over 3/36000 as the part tpim controls the items covered under powertrain warranty. This should have been a nationwide recall as it has happened to Dodges/Jeep/etc and obviously by social media viewing it continues. Not only a factory or part defect obviously but a serious safety matter for those driving or riding in the vehicle. One lawsuit and maybe they will correct? no idea on eta of part, "will call you weekly" w/updates is not a good sign. America bailed out Chrysler and now America is driving unsafe and potentially life-threathening vehicles. They apparently are offering rental cars to some. We customers still have to pay our carpayments/insurance etc while our vehicles sit for weeks on end for an issue that we had no warning system light detection and engine stalling was random either at the start of your engine starting or on the road with the potential accident happening. Come on Chrysler protect the americans that bailed you out and do a recall on this dangerous issue and find the part. . . Eta unknown is not acceptable or face even more loss of sales due to the negativity of safety/engine problems such as this. No re-do's on bailouts.
