36 Engine Stall problem of the 2005 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 08/01/2013

2 problems: 1) even though our local dealership is insistent that we don't have a recall, I can see a recall on your page about windshield wiper motors. Our wipers come on every time we start the vehicle, and they work sporadically. Sometimes while they're on, they won't come on at all, as mentioned in the recall information. Why isn't mine covered? 2) biggest problem: several times (upwards of ten times) I have been going slow, usually making a turn, and my engine stalls. I have to turn the key off and then restart, and I'm okay again. Took it to a mechanic in the last part of July/first part of August last year, and he replaced the fuel pump. It didn't occur again until December, while we were on vacation- we were slowly going up a hill and it stalled. Had to turn the key off and then re-start it. It hadn't done it again until a couple days ago. It did it three times in one day, then has been doing it each day since. I'm really afraid that the Durango is going to die in the middle of traffic and I'll get hit. I have four young kids, and I am panicked thinking about having to drive it with them inside, because I'm afraid that we're going to get hit and hurt. It's so scary that I'm tempted to trade it in- though I can't really afford it, we just bought this thing used last year. I'm wondering if it did this for the previous owners as well. There are complaints all over the internet about this same problem, but no fix for it. Even if I could get a mechanic to tell me what it is and fix it, I'd do that, but nobody seems to know what the answer is. It's obviously a huge safety issue!! please help!!.

37 Engine Stall problem of the 2004 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 07/14/2013

I am adding my 2004 Dodge Durango slt 5. 7 hemi to the growing list of those with blown engines. Like many on this site mine was well taken care of with maintenance performed at regular intervals. I bought it brand new and was the primary driver for nine years. Besides the recall for the electrical panel, the only problem I had with it was decreased reliability of the air conditioner and the engine stalling in the rain. The first time the engine idled poorly in the rain was around 2009. It seemed to be intermittent and anyone I spoke to about it said that water could not get in the engine and it checked out fine. I truly enjoyed driving this vehicle and planned to drive it until it fell apart, which came sooner than expected. I drove from florida to ohio and back Dec 2012 and had no issues at all. On July 12, 2013 I drove to work and home with a perfectly performing Durango. On July 13, 2013 it rained heavily for several hours and I stayed home all day. The next morning when I went out to go to work it would not start. When I tried to start it only clicked and would not turn over. After several hours of research, a new battery, starter, and ignition fuse, we finally turned the engine manually to get it started. That's when the knocking engine was revealed. The water entering the engine during the heavy rain caused the engine to hydra lock and that is why it would not start. I am truly amazed after my research on this site and others that there have been hundreds of other 2004 Durangos that this has happened to that clearly proves that this was a defect in the year model. The older models last for 200,000 to 300,000 miles. My husband has a ram truck with 175,000 miles and still runs fine. I would truly hope the company would recognize this and offer some type of reimbursement to the owners of these vehicles. This incident caused me much emotional and financial strain.

41 Engine Stall problem of the 2006 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 12/21/2012

As I was exiting a highway, my 2006 Dodge Durango suddenly stalled out. The engine light came on after it stalled. I lost control of steering and was unable to brake. I nearly crashed into the car in front of me, and was barely able to turn the steering wheel enough to run into the curb to stop my vehicle! I was not able to re-start it and had to be towed. While waiting for police to arrive, I was nearly rear-ended multiple times. It was towed to a shop and the mechanic was able to start it up with no problem the next morning. He checked everything, and ran all diagnostic tests - all came back showing no problems. There is clearly a problem - and there are man, many, many complaints about it all over the internet. If I had been on the highway when this happened, I could have been in a very serious accident and could have been killed, or killed someone else, since I lost complete control of the vehicle and was unable to steer or brake. Is it going to take a fatality before this is recalled and fixed?????? I am scared to death to drive it now!.

43 Engine Stall problem of the 2005 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 03/21/2012

This vehicle occasionally stalls, leaving no power steering or power brakes. This was not a single incident; this has happened probably 50 times over the past 4 years. It has happened at multiple vehicle speeds, and has happened in both forward ("drive") and reverse gears. The vehicle has always immediately restarted, and it drives normally after restarting. There is no warning or indication that the engine is about to stall, and no check engine (or other) light comes on before or after the incident. The most recent incident happened after dropping my son off at his school. While driving through the school parking lot to leave, the vehicle stalled and I wasn't able to control it (very high steering effort, difficult to stop). I almost hit another vehicle. I also realized the severity of this problem because it could have been a child instead of another vehicle which I nearly struck. A quick web search produced results showing other drivers of Dodge Durangos have experienced the same stalling phenomenon, so I'm confident that this is a defect in the design or manufacturing of the vehicle, and not just a single case of my vehicle being bad. Please look into this further, as it has the same safety implications as the ignition switch failures within gm.

44 Engine Stall problem of the 2005 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 02/23/2012

Engine runs rough and stalls when driving slowly and going around turns. It does not brake or steer effectively after the engine stalls.

45 Engine Stall problem of the 2004 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 02/01/2012

The contact owns a 2004 Dodge Durango. While driving approximately 35 mph and making a right turn, the engine stalled without warning. The failure only occurred during inclement weather or after the vehicle was washed. The vehicle would only restart after the vehicle was completely dry. The failure occurred multiple times. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and an independent mechanic for diagnostic testing. The technician diagnosed that water leaked into the engine and spark plugs, which caused corrosion. The spark plugs were replaced, but the failure persisted. The manufacturer was notified. The approximate failure mileage was 115,000.

46 Engine Stall problem of the 2004 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 01/01/2012

48 Engine Stall problem of the 2004 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 12/17/2011

My passenger and I were sitting at a red light. The check engine of my 2004 Dodge Durango limited (5. 7ltr) came on, then the battery light came on and both of those lights started to flicker. There was a loud squeal and a pop, then the engine stalled and I felt the brake pedal fall straight to the floor. White smoke started to emerge from the engine compartment, which quickly turned a thick black color. I couldn't even see through the smoke, as it was so dense. I grabbed my phone and proceeded to call roadside assistance to get the vehicle off of the road (the vehicle was blocking a lane of a major highway in my town). I started to smell burning plastic and thought, "am I on fire?". My passenger instructed me to lower my window because another driver was yelling something and making hand gestures. When I tried to use the windows, I noticed that I had lost all power. In a panic I opened the door and instructed my passenger to do the same. That was when we heard what the other drivers were screaming. "get out of the truck, it's on fire!". When I turned to get out of the vehicle, that was when I saw the flames flowing up the windshield about 4" long. We jumped out of the vehicle and ran across the road to the curb, turned to view the vehicle, seen that it was a large fire and decided to run about 200-300 feet away from it. Just in case it exploded. The firemen were there in under a minute, but the vehicle was engulfed in flames in about 30 to 45 seconds. I have a large family and it's a good thing they were not all with me, as is the case 90% of the time. I do not know if I would've had time to get three small children out of their carseats in time. This could've ended much worse than it did.

49 Engine Stall problem of the 2012 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 12/16/2011

Brand new vehicle lease. At dealership when vehicle was put in gear engine stalled 4 times. Salesman entered vehicle and accelerated engine then put in gear and vehicle continued to run and stated vehicle was ok. About 30 miles away when coming to a stop because of traffic vehicle stalled in the middle of a busy 50mph intersection and was almost struck by a oncoming tractor trailer. After locking up his brakes an accident was just barely avoided. It took 4 tries to get the Durango to move again without shutting off. Vehicle is at the dealer now and they do not know as of yet what the problem is and refuse to give me a different vehicle. My family could have been killed.

50 Engine Stall problem of the 2004 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 08/06/2011

SUV had been running just fine, with no warning on a Saturday morning I loaded up the kids to go to the pool and started the truck. It sounded like rocks being thrown around in the engine and my husband in the garage saw sparks under the car. I turned it off immediately. Had the truck towed to the Dodge dealer where it was originally bought and received all of its service and it turns out the engine threw a rod. 2004 hemi with 102000 miles. Dodge dealer told me they could fix it for just over $10k with a new engine or $7500 for a used engine - absolutely ridiculous! upon internet search, appears that too many 04 hemis have had this problem. I'm not ready to part with this truck, I expected to run it for many many many years - not 7. Chrysler owes the consumers for this shoddy engine. * ended up going with a remanufactured jasper engine installed by motorworks in monmouth, NJ - $6500. This is far too much to spend on a 7 year old car, I will never buy a Dodge again.

51 Engine Stall problem of the 2005 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 02/24/2011

While driving the rpms will jump around. Then when slowing down or at a stop the engine will stall out. This has usually happens going about 34-50 mph and it stalls leaving you unable to turn. Very dangerous. They have reprogramed computer and replaced throttle positioner. It has occured around 5 times just in the past week. It started out doing it once every couple months now it will do it within feet of restarting. I have to stop, put in park, and restart.

52 Engine Stall problem of the 2005 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 11/01/2010

I bought this vehicle used, and started having problems with it immediately after buying it. Gas overflows out of the gas tank almost every time I fill it up. It's going to catch on fire at some point because of this. Also, the engine stalls out at random times causing the vehicle to steer and brake very poorly until restarted. I noticed that other model years of this same vehicle have had the same problems as this one, however Dodge refuses to fix this one - even though other model years have been recalled and repaired. This stupid thing is going to blow up one day at the gas station, or I'm going to crash into somebody when it stalls, but I can't afford to spend thousands of dollars to take it every mechanic on the planet to find out what is wrong with it - especially since Dodge already knows what is wrong with it - but just won't take responsibility for building it poorly.

53 Engine Stall problem of the 2005 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 09/30/2010

I have already filed this complaint but never got any resolution and the problem is getting worse. The engine stalls at low speeds. It sounds just like your what is described in your investigation ea05018. It is now at the mechanic and they have been unable to diagnose a problem so far. I am concerned about driving this vehicle and if this is a known defect I want to know why Chrysler/Dodge or the odi cannot offer a fix immediately before safety is further compromised?.

55 Engine Stall problem of the 2005 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 08/03/2010

I was driving my 05 Dodge Durango with my 2 year old in his carseat in the backseat and had just turned left into a parking lot, while in the parking lot the engine stalled (shut off) causing loss of power steering as well. Coasted into a parking stall and was able to restart the engine. Very unsafe and apparently very common in this year, make, and model.

56 Engine Stall problem of the 2004 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 06/25/2010

Traveling uphill at 65 mph traffic came to a halt, I removed my foot from the gas pedal to apply the brakes and then the engine stalled. I was in the fast lane, my speed at this point was 5 mph (coasting , no engine) I had to put the transmission in park and restarted the engine. This has happened once before with less than 10,000 miles in a simular stiuation. I also own two 2010 Dodge challengers with the same type engine, I have spoken to many of the 2008-2011 challenger owners and they report the same thing happening. I believe that this stituation is wide spread troughout Chrysler with the hemi engines, computer system. This can become a very dangerous situation and needs to be looked at. Many of the people that I have spoken with, have mentioned this to their dealer's service department and Chrysler, however they have not received any satisfaction to the problem.

57 Engine Stall problem of the 2007 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 05/21/2010

I have a 2007 Dodge Durango hemi limited and my wife was driving it on the turnpike expressway toward south at 55 mph when suddenly the engine stalls out without any warning, she lost complete control over the car, the brakes and the steering did not work, she had to maneuver the car and thanks her expertise and no car in her way, she can stopped it putting the transmission in "park", was the only way to stop that deadly situation. My daughter was inside the car so terrified. I took it back towed to the dealer and just like most others with this problem they couldn't find anything. They are trying to get me to pay them first to put a battery and another sensor to see what happened or what is the problem, they don't know. This car almost kills my family and/or someone else and potamkin planet Dodge at doral and Dodge doesn't response. I am going to get legal help for this matter.

58 Engine Stall problem of the 2005 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 05/21/2010

Engine stalls without warning losing all power assisted control to vehicle. Vehicle stall will occur at random times and during different driving maneuvers; turning left, stopping and driving straight. Service/repair shop unable to duplicate problem in order to diagnose the very potentially dangerous hazard created by the defective vehicle. Stalling occurred less frequently in the beginning but has increasingly become more often; approximately once a day.

59 Engine Stall problem of the 2005 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 05/05/2010

The contact owns a 2005 Dodge Durango. The contact was driving approximately 20 mph and the engine stalled without prior warning. The vehicle restarted and the contact was able to continue driving. The failure occurred intermittently. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for diagnostic testing; however, they were unable to detect a trouble code. The failure continued to occur. In addition, whenever refueling the vehicle to its fuel capacity level the automatic shut off feature failed to engage causing fuel to spew onto the ground. The manufacturer was made aware of the problem. The approximate failure mileage was 65,000.

60 Engine Stall problem of the 2004 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 10/09/2009

2004 Dodge Durango, equipped with 5. 7l v8 hemi, stalls sporadically with no advanced warning. The engine can generally be restarted immediately with little or no modification to the vehicle's configuration. When the engine stalls occur, all power steering and braking functions are rendered inoperative. Stalling events appear to be unrelated to weather conditions, or usage of automobile functions (I. E. Air conditioning, radio, etc. ). Most instances occur during low speed maneuvers, to include parking lot and driveway operations, and pulling away from stop signs or traffic lights. However, on several occasions, stalling has occurred during straight-forward driving, with little or no maneuvering on freeway or city streets.

61 Engine Stall problem of the 2005 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 08/03/2009

The contact owns a 2005 Dodge Durango. While driving approximately 15 mph, the engine stalled with the illumination of the check engine warning indicator. The vehicle restarted and functioned normal. The failure was a continuous occurrence. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for inspection and they were unable to duplicate the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 60,000.

62 Engine Stall problem of the 2005 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 07/18/2009

I have a 2005 Dodge Durango slt with a 5. 7 hemi. Problems with engine stalling. This has happened while stopped at a light/stop sign, pulling into/out of driveway/parking spots and most recently while driving approximately 30 mph. The stalling has happened about 15-20 times since owning this vehicle. Almost total loss of steering and braking was not 100%. I have had it into a Dodge dealer before for this problem and of course they've found nothing so no repairs have been made. This is very dangerous especially since I almost always have children in the car with me.

63 Engine Stall problem of the 2005 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 06/28/2009

05 Dodge Durango 5. 7l v8 engine stalls during deceleration and turns with acceleration. Extremely unsafe and happens frequently with loss of all power steering and power breaking. Driving 60mph on freeway 331 engine stalled on lane merger causes several cars to severely break and the Durango to run off the road in a ditch. The result was towing the vehicle to a dealership for repair. After vehicle was picked up we drove the vehicle 100miles at which time it stalled again causing another near fatal wreck with my wife and 3 small children present. This issue is a know problem with ddc however we were not aware of any stalling issues. I feel this needs to be fixed before someone is killed. I feel my family was put in danger over an issue that seems very common.

64 Engine Stall problem of the 1999 Dodge Durango

65 Engine Stall problem of the 2004 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 12/25/2008

During medium/heavy rain the engine stalls badly or completely dies. Also happens during car washes, though not a safety issue then- just aggravating! :( restarts only after rain subsides. This creates a very dangerous driving condition- for myself and those vehicles around me. My research shows this is a very common problem for this vehicle. Despite countless complaints, it appears Dodge has refused to acknowledge or address it for several years, alienating many previously loyal customers (this was a very popular SUV). The factory waranty was expired/near to expire when most of us began to experience this so we had little recourse. As my vehicle was purchased new and has low miles for its age, I plan to keep it for the foreseeable future- circumstances permitting. . . Thank you for letting me post my concern here! I hope something can be done to correct this very serious issue. Long overdue! step up Chrysler and stand behind your product. Thank you again for giving attention to my concern. :).

66 Engine Stall problem of the 2004 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 12/20/2008

Intermittent engine stalling while driving.

67 Engine Stall problem of the 2005 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 07/12/2008

Engine stalled several times during vehicle turns. This occurs every year with the vehicle especially during warm weather months. Currently still own vehicle and had one injury accident in 2013 directly related to stalling issues.

68 Engine Stall problem of the 2005 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 05/06/2008

My 2005 Dodge Durango SUV has been experiencing engine stalling while driving for the past 6 months. It always happens while it is being driven in rainy or wet conditions. It happened the first time in November 2007 on regular surface streets while it was raining and my wife was driving straight ahead. The vehicle stalled and she was unable to re-start it for over 2 minutes in normal traffic conditions. The second time on or about 3/11/08 my wife was turning right at an intersection in rainy conditions and the engine stalled mid turn and she was unable to re-start the engine for over 2 minutes in normal traffic conditions. The third time occurred 5/6/08 on regular surface streets driving straight ahead in rainy conditions and the vehicle stalled and was unable to be re-started for at least 2 minutes. All 3 occurrences involved loss of control of the vehicle due to the loss of power steering and power brake controls while our children were present in the vehicle. I took the vehicle in to allan samuels Dodge in alliance texas after the 2nd incident for warranty covered diagnosis and they informed me after having the vehicle overnight for a full day that they did not find anything wrong with it. I took it back to them after the 3rd incident and after having it for 2 full days they are still advising me that they can not find a problem with the vehicle and are not recommending any course of action to correct it. No parts have been replaced or repaired on the vehicle to my knowledge according to the service receipts given to me. I believe they are simply hooking up the ecm scanner and looking for failure codes, of which both times I took it in I was told there were none present. In my opinion right now, nothing has been done to correct the problem with my vehicle and I am very concerned about the safety of this vehicle and my wife and children inside of it.
