Driving home from a family trip 220 miles away my 2011 Durango dash lights and gages went haywire flickering on and off, windows would not roll down, ac went out but heat was blowing, loud high pitch sound came from the engine, radio went out, wipers going on full speed and could not turn them off. Finally we lost power steering, parked and the car shook bad as we turned it off. Went to turn on and nothing it wouldn't start. Aaa came out said alternator was toast, replaced that then it said battery was dead,( couldnt even get the vehicle in neutral to tow), so replaced that. Was able to drive for about 3 miles and it started all over again but this time a bad smell (burning smell) came from under the passengers seat, battery was making a sound and was extremely hot! I had my 3 little kids in the car with me and this thing could have blown so we had it towed! it has 79000 miles on it, never had an issue, and just had the recall done about 2 weeks prior that supposedly prevents this! the dealership has it now. Ive just dumped $700+ and it didnt even fix it! this could have caused a serious accident for my family and others or worse caught on fire with us in it! this was my first Dodge and will be my last especially if Dodge does nothing to fix this!.

Vehicle was parked at work. I got off work came to vehicle entered and started engine after about 1 minute, a buzzing sound came from under the dash, then I began to smell smoke like burning wires or something electrical under the dash. Then I saw smoke coming from the engine compartment (under the vehicles front hood). By this time about 1 minute had passed with the engine idling in park. I opened the hood and looked in to see that the alternator was smoking and red hot inside. I tried to turn off the engine, but no response from the ignition button, then crazy electrical things happened with lights dash wipers and etc. , then the engine died, and there was not any power or battery everything was dead. I am glad I was not out on the freeway when this happened, or had the family with me. Vehicle was towed to auburn transmission and auto repair. Ph. (253)737-5913 it is my belief that the alternator went to a dead short and killed the battery so fast, it was amazing to see. I thought there would be some kind of fuseable link to prevent such a thing from occurring. That is a most dangerous design, fire prone.
I was driving with my kids getting our day started. I turn on with remote start was making loud screeching sound. Loaded up kids and started to take off. We could all smell a bad burning smell. I check all temps on car and nothing read high temperature. I drove on my way to daycare when my car stalled and shut down. And it had previously did this b4 like 4 months or so and a recall of fuel pump was done and had been running fine till this day. I tried starting it a few times nothing. Finally turn on and battery light came on. I drove it to drop of my 3 kids at camp when it kept feeling like it wanted to turn of. Still smelling burning. Finally I'm headed to work and it stalled in middle of intersection. Thank god I didn't have my kids with me and no accidents happened. I had car towed to local mechanic because dealership is and hour away. He said alternator gave out. Put new alternator in still nothing. 600 dollars down drain. Now I have to pay towing to get to dealership which will mean just more money down the drain which I don't have the extra money and use this car for wk so hopefully I don't lose my job. I don't understand how I have same exact problems as another 2011 Durango under recall but mine ain't one of them. Do you have to wait till someone is seriously hurt or killed to have a recall. If none of this is resolved properly I will be hiring a lawyer. I have only had vehicle for 2yrs.
Just purchased this vehicle two months ago from dealer in NJ. We had a hard rain about a month ago, and the Durango wouldn't start immediately. I turned it over again a few hours later and it started with a hard rumble, but it started up. It drove fine for about a month, and just as the wife and I were leaving a gas station, we drove about fifty feet and heard a loud bang. Smoke was coming out of the passenger side of the engine, and the Durango was making a noise like metal was rolling around in the engine. I stopped the car, pulling over to the side of the road. I looked under the Durango and saw oil dripping out from the engine. I got under the car to inspect it a little further and saw a dime size hole in the engine block. I got the car towed back to my home as it was Saturday and the mechanic was not open. The tow truck driver told me that this was the third Durango he picked up that day. Not saying that all of the other cars were towed because a blown engine, but you get the idea. Dealer wouldn't warranty vehicle because of mileage. I couldn't get anyone to warranty the Durango because of the mileage being over 150000. Now im told I will have to buy a remanned/new engine for this clunker. I will be making a complaint to the manufacturer. I know it may not go anywhere. I have read all of the complaints here and on the internet, forums, etc. All the result of blown engines due to "hydro-locking", and the wiper cowl defect were water would get into the engine during heavy rains or car washes. I hope our government would intervene on behalf of its citizens and force Chrysler to issue a recall or at least be responsible for a defect that they created, but I won't hold my breath. My Durango currently has 160131 miles on it, and I guess it's gonna stay that way now because it can't move, and I still owe money on a SUV that I cannot drive. Nhtsa do the right thing.

Engine making noise at start up. Had it looked at by several mechanics, including the local Dodge dealer. Said it is probably piston. Had valve covers and heads taken off for possible stuck lifter and found plenty of rust etc. That would indicate water in motor. Several people indicated this is an issue with this model and make with leaking cowling at windshield leaking water onto motor in bad spots causing this failure. Should not be needing new motor at 107k.
My vehicle start to being slow. It does not star , turn off after start . Has a strange noise when running. I call DE dealer, asking what happens if I have an accident with children. The said the insurance will pay. That they have not received the parts already and I have to wait until tomorrow. What will I do without my car for severals days? I do not have another one, the insurance says they will not allow me to have another.
I have a 2012 Dodge durange rt. When parked at a gas station, tried to turn engine on with push start switch and engine does not start. When pushing start switch again it makes the sound like the engine is trying to turn over but does nothing. In order to get the engine to stop from making the turn over noise I have to move from park to in gear. Then I receive the "ignition or accessory on" message. In order to get the message clear I have to turn off vehicle without pressing the brake. This puts the engine into the off mode and I have to start the process to get the car to start all over again. This has happened multiple occasions and I have video to show the defect. I have done research and read this issue with many people saying it is the tipm defect. Also, when using my right blinker instead of the front blinker working my fog lights flash. For the vehicle to not start or stall is a big safety concern and liability.

2014 Dodge Durango. Consumer writes in regards to vehicle hesitation during acceleration. The dealer performed tests, and found nothing wrong with the vehicle. However, the dealer did perform a pcm update. Two days later, the vehicle stalled in traffic. When the consumer applied the accelerator pedal, the vehicle made a strange noise and the check engine light illuminated. She turned the vehicle off and back on again, and the sound stopped, but the check engine light remained lit. While returning to the dealer, the vehicle stalled again.

I only had the darn SUV since 02/12. It rained very bad Friday night 7-26-13 and when I went to start the car the next morning the engine sounds like a hammer is in it or something I know I always had engine problems whenever I got a carwash but nothing like this time it's not driveable and I hope someone can get everyone a recall on these no good engines or motors whatever now I'm stuck in debt!!! its ticking and I dont know the next step to take.
Driving north bound on I 95 in south carolina the check engine light came on and a flapping sound followed by a loss of power and a very rough idle. Pull to off ramp, shut car off, and called for a nearby Dodge dealer and a tow. It seems a "new" engine is required. Dodge does not supply new engines with replacements they use remanufactured engines. The cost with labor will be $7,500. Upon requesting the true cause and broken parts I was told Dodge requires all parts be sent back with the broken engine to remanufacture a future engine. Very convenient to prevent any independent examination of the problem. Research on various sites like edmunds illustrates that this engine failure of the 5. 7l hemi in the second generation Durango's is prevalent. Dodge refuses to help with the repair because of the age of the vehicle.
I went out one morning to due my daily running for the day and when I turned the key and the vehicle started it made a sound like the starter was stuck. I turned it off and called my husband and when I started it again there was a loud pecking in the motor. I took it to a local garage and the man listened to it and told me that the noise was coming from inside the motor and that he did not do motor work. So I found another garage and took it to them and they told me that it was the starter that was bad and that they wouldn't be able to get to it for a week or so. So I called the lot that the vehicle was bought from and he sent me to his garage and the man there told me that he would take a look at it and get back to me. Well he called the next day and told me that all of the noise was coming from the transmission and that it was the fly wheel so he replaced the fly wheel and the called me back and told me that the torque converter was what was making the noise. That the veins in it was bad and rattling around so I had to wait another three days for the part to come in. After he replaced that part and put it all back together and called me and told me that it was done and that it was still making that noise, and that he could not figure out where it was coming from. He started that he called the Dodge garage and talked to the about it and they told him that the crank was bad. And that there was nothing that they could do about it. So I asked them about rebuilding the motor and he laughed at me and told me that if I could find someone that would attempt to rebuild it that he would shake their hand that no one will attempt it. All I could do is have another motor put in it. We have had that 2004 Durango 5. 7 for only a year and we still owe the bank for the vehicle. And an engine is going to cost us 3400. 00 not to mention labor fee for putting it in.
Started car in the morning and it started to make engine noise. Took it to dealer. They said the rod bearing is bad. Have to replace engine.

The contact owns a 2004 Dodge Durango. The contact stated that upon starting the vehicle the engine sound was similar to a "lawn mower". There were no warning lights illuminated on the instrumental panel upon starting the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to a dealer who informed the contact that she needed to replace the engine due a piston fracturing a block in the engine. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 96,000. The VIN was unavailable.
The contact owns a 2000 Dodge Durango. While driving 25 mph, the vehicle began driving roughly and smoke appeared under the hood. The brakes stiffened when the brake pedal was depressed. The contact eased off the brakes, but they failed completely. More smoke appeared under the hood. The contact attempted to pull the vehicle over, but lost control. She heard two snapping noises under the hood. She applied the emergency brake, which stopped the vehicle. The passenger opened the hood and noticed flames in the engine. They called the fire department and a report was filed. The engine fire spread to the passenger compartment of the vehicle. A few minutes later, the vehicle was engulfed in flames. There were no injuries. Prior to the fire, repairs had been made to the engine because it would stall and overheat. The contact brought the vehicle in for service the day after the vehicle was purchased in November of 2008. The current and failure mileages were 124,000.

I purchased my 2005 Dodge Durango last March and in June it started stalling while I was driving! it would happen while driving in town and I noticed it a lot when I made right turns. There was no warning. . . Didn't make any sounds, no lights came on. . . I would just try to push the gas and there was nothing. It was all I could do to get it pulled off the road and avoid getting hit! this happened about 5 times within a two week period before I thought it was fixed. The first time it occurred I took it straight to the dealership and they could find nothing wrong. The computer did not pick up any errors and there was nothing they could do for me. Then after it happened a few more times I took it straight there again and they found a software update. This seemed to have fixed it. So I thought until now. Last week it started again. . . 1 time while making a right turn. I came very close to getting hit and now I have a 3 month old baby riding in the car to worry about also. So, I thought great here we go again. I waited for it to happen once more before I took it back to the dealership and a few days later it happened again while making a right turn in town. Again, they are saying there are no errors in the computer and they have no idea how to fix the problem or that it is even "really" happening! so in other words I am making this up! this time I was not taking my car back until I could be absolutely sure that it is safe to drive. It took me an hour of going round and round with them before they broke down and gave me a rental. They are going to have one of their mechanics test it for a few days and try to get it to happen while he is driving it. In the mean time, I am filing for the lemon law which could take up to four weeks and I know they are not going to let me keep a rental for that long! so I have no idea what I am going to do for now. Hopefully it happens while the mechanic is driving it and they can come up with a solution.
Sludge build up occurred in the Dodge Durango. The dealer informed the consumer that there was sludge in the engine and that it was as a result of neglect which then voided the warranty. The consumer explained that the vehicle oil had been changed numerous time by non-dealer mechanic. The dealer nor manufacturer provided any financial assistance. The consumer had the engine replaced by a local repair facility. The consumer's vehicle was making noise in the front end.

Going on a trip oil pressure gauge went to 0 then back up to normal then back down to 0, check gauge light came on. Pulled off interstate, listened to motor sounded normal, checked oil which was fine, decided it must have been the oil sending unit gone bad gauge had went back to normal, so started back on the road. Then gauge started dropping again, stopped and put 1/2 quart of oil in, engine still sounded fine, started back on the road. Went about 30 miles, motor started knocking. Pulled off the interstate, engine knocking really bad. Turned motor off then back on, engine sounded so bad cut it off and called a wrecker $50. 00. Towed it to a Dodge dealership who said the motor was blown would cost approximately $5000. 00 to fix. Had to rent a car $35. 00 a day. Motor never let on there was anything wrong, never used oil, never smoked.
