37 Engine problem of the 2000 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 04/15/2006

Loss of oil pressure due to sludge caused the engine to seize. Vehicle was well maintained, which luckily I have all the documentation. Trusted mechanic stated that this is not the first time he has heard of this problem and that this is a common problem with this type of engine, as there is a design flaw which does not allow oil to flow properly to all parts of engine. He stated that it would be better to put in a new engine as the repair to the existing engine would be extensive. I called Dodge and they will not do anything about the problem.

As I was driving down us41, I felt an "internal kickback", definitely not due to acceleration or other driver input. Right after, the "check engine" light turned on. The same incident occurred again in October 2005 when we were pulling out of a parking lot. My husband thought that he had been rear-ended, but I recognized the kickback and saw that the "check engine" light had turned back on. The truck is a 2004 Dodge Durango.

43 Engine problem of the 1999 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 06/05/2005

The consumer kept up the maintenance on the vehicle. While driving on the highway a through rod entered the oil pan and it destroyed the engine. There was slug built up in the bottom of the oil pan that caused the pump to fail. There was no for warning, but one could hear metal against metal grinding. Oil light did not come on. Spoke with the dealer and Chrysler, and they said there was nothing they could do because warranty expired. This happened on June 5, 2005. Had the engine replaced and the consumer paid the cost out of pocket.

44 Engine problem of the 2005 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 04/14/2005

While turning left into a parking lot, across a fairly busy road, my 3 week old Dodge Durango limited hemi just cut out. The power steering disappeared, the engine was gone, and I was in the middle of the oncoming lane. I switched the vehicle off, and on a few times until the power steering and acceleration were back. This is very dangerous, my dealer claims that the computer reports nothing is wrong, and I refuse to take back the vehicle. Many people seem to have logged complaints of this nature on Dodgetalk. Com, what can be done about this?.

51 Engine problem of the 1998 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 07/24/2004

I purchased a 1998 Dodge Durango, slt, brand new. Over the last two years we have had the oil pressure gauge drop to zero and twice have replaced the oil sending(?) unit. In July, 2004, while on vacation, the oil pressure drops to zero, it starts knocking and before we can get to an exit it gets loud and dies. We coast into a filling station and the oil is running out on the ground. My husband walks to a u'haul and rents a truck and trailer, goes to a hardware store and buys a come-along to get the Durango onto the trailer to tow it home. After doing research on the internet, I find this is a common occurance among the Dodge Durangos. When we started out for vacation, the Durango had 69,000 miles on it. I had to rent a vehicle to tow mine home, buy a new engine, rent a vehicle to get back and forth for the next few weeks and without even being close to finished with this nightmare, I am at the $3,000 mark. I also bought the extended warranty. Any recourse possible?.

65 Engine problem of the 1999 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 11/05/2003

My 99 Durango has a defective engine! my oil pressure gauge dropped to zero while driving on the expressway so I pulled off and let the motor cool down and checked the oil. After letting the engine cool off for a while I preceded home. After about 10 miles back on the road the check gauges light came on, the oil pressure had dropped to zero again, and I could feel the truck slowing down without letting off the gas. I pulled off the next exit and the motor knocking like someone was slamming a hammer on the heads. The dealer said to have it towed in so they could look at it. After 2 days the dealer called me back and said I needed a new long block. I and asked how a motor with only 50,000 miles on it could need a new block. The dealer's response was the engine had some sludge in the oil and in his opinion thought it was due to lack of maintenance. It took everything I had to keep from going off on this guy for accusing me of not maintaining my $30,000 truck! I do the oil changes, air filter, and fluid level maintenance myself because I don't trust some of these guys that work at these dealers. It's my $30,000 that's why I do my own maintenance! I called Chrysler's 800 help line and explained what happened to the guy who took my call. He listened, but sounded very un-interested as he asked a few questions, put me on hold as he called the dealer where my vehicle was. After 15-20 minutes he came back on the line and said he was sorry, but there was nothing he, nor Chrysler could do to help me because the dealer told him that he thought it was due to lack of maintenance. My wife called Chrysler later and she explained the story to the lady that took her call. Her response to my wife was this: "if you can produce receipts for all the maintenance maybe we will change our minds. " my wife told the lady I do all the maintenance, no other service shop, and she told my wife that owners that do their own oil changes are not Dodge certified mechanics.
