1 Engine Rattling And Whining Sounds problem of the 2013 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 08/19/2020

When I first started my car, I heard a whining noise that didn't sound normal, but was not overly loud. About 5 minutes later (maybe less), as I was traveling down a town road doing 30mph the car shut off. My electrical system still worked as the radio and air conditioning were on. I pulled into a driveway of a business (without power steering) and parked. I was going to check to see if everything looked normal and see if maybe the fuel pump relay had an issue. My fuel pump relay had previously been repaired in 2015 due to NHTSA recall # 15v-115. However, in may 2019, the car stopped running when it was driving 70mph down an interstate. I was informed by Dodge that the fuel pump relay would not be covered under the previous recall for a second time because it had expired after 2 years. In November 2019, I received another recall notification for the fuel pump relay (nhsta recall # 19v-813); however, it was incomplete because parts were not available. When I opened the door, I smelled burning rubber but did not observe any smoke. After I was able to pop the hood, I saw a small flame in the area of the alternator. I immediately got my two children (ages 3 and 6) out of the car and called 911. My husband arrived before the fire truck, but the 911 operator told us not to try to put out the fire with the fire extinguisher he brought. The car was a total loss by the time the fire was put out by firefighters. I'm just thankful, for one, that my children and I made it safely out of the car, and for another, that I did not make it the mile and a half left to home and get parked in my carport before my car caught fire. I was informed of NHTSA recall # 17v-435 relating to alternator failure and can't help but wonder, due to the location of the flame, if my VIN should've been included in that recall, but was not.

5 Engine Rattling And Whining Sounds problem of the 2004 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 10/19/2013

After returning from a week long business trip, I went to my Durango that was parked at the airport. The battery was dead for some reason, and used a jump box to start the vehicle. Immediately upon started, the engine started to make a long rattling noise, then shut down. Upon further review, I found oil leaking from under the vehicle, and a piece of metal as well. After having the Durango towed to my home, I checked out the engine to find a whole in the engine block just in front of the starter on the passenger side. It appears that this is a recurring problem with many people for the 2004 5. 7l hemi engine. I am surprised that this has not been addressed yet. I am thankful that I was not driving when this happened as it has with some, but I suppose it will take a fatality until it is deemed serious enough for a recall.

8 Engine Rattling And Whining Sounds problem of the 2000 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 11/26/2003

Check gauges light came on with no warning. All gauges were normal. A loud rattling sound was followed by the oil pressure dropping to zero and the engine failed. Vehicle has been towed to wiesner Dodge in rosenberg, texas. Dealer claimed sludge in the oil caused the failure. I have regular documented oil change receipts. Payment of repair (est. $6000) is pending meeting with warranty adjuster. How can our federally funded agencies ignore the vast multitude of complaints on this problem without investigating?????.

9 Engine Rattling And Whining Sounds problem of the 1999 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 05/16/2003

I own a 1999 Dodge Durango. I have had alot of trouble with it. At first when I would call or take it by the dealership, they would tell me that nothing was wrong. The first problem was with the steering wheel making a rattling noise between 20-30 mph. They first told me nothing was wrong it was tire noise. Then I brought it back a week later and they replaced the catalytic converter. When it was still doing it a week later, I took it to another dealer and the steering column was found to be bent and replaced. Not long after that I had trouble with the engine, when I would stop, the engine would idle down and almost stall. I stopped at a gas station and found I had no oil. I put in two quarts and called the dealer. They found the plenum gasket had a leak. I had that replaced for over $450. Shortly after that I was traveling home on the highway and it hesitated and the check engine light came on. I took it into the dealer and they ran a diagnostics test and couldn't find anything wrong. I notice that the rpm's had started revving up and down while you were driving right after this happen. I called and questioned about it and they said to change the oil. It still did it after an oil change. While on our way home to NY, we had stopped and it stalled in the middle of the road and the check engine light came on again. When we got home I took it in and had another test done on it. They replaced the output speed sensor and said that was going to fix it. It still did the rpm thing after that, and they told me that I would have to pay for another diagnostics test. I have since, gotten a tune up and oil change, and it still does it. The check engine light keeps coming on and going off. I am sorry that this is so long, but I feel like I have tried everything and no one will help. My questions are, have you heard of anything like these problems before, are there any related recalls, and is there anything you can do to help get this resolved? I would appreciate any help!.
