Equipment Problems of Dodge Durango - part 2

Start/stop feature says it is unavailable causing vehicle to not shut off when stopped as well as causing vehicle to give message saying start/stop feature unavailable due to hood open which then causes vehicle to shut off once stopped and requires vehicle to be shifted into park and restarted for message to come back on. This issue happens when driving and once stopped causes vehicle shut off in traffic causing huge safety concerns and issues.

Radio screen delaminated and randomly pushing buttons turning functions of the car on and off, adjusting the climate you can’t fix, calling people randomly. This is a very well known issue with these screens and should be a recall. Very distracting to the driver and you are unable to keep this from happening. Unable to control certain functions in the car. Has been delaminating for years but getting worse and more of a problem.

The rear bolt which holds the automatic lift for the rear hatch broke off and is stripped. The trunk door is no longer being supported by the arm and is quite heavy. Every mechanic is unable to address the issue and this seems to be very common among this model of the car. The broken bolt is flushed against the frame of the vehicle. Passenger side active headrest deployed without warning. No lights/ alarms on dash display.

Car started leaking coolant underneath. The dealership told us the lines that control the rear heat are leaking. And it’s a major job. $ 3100. 00 we were told. The coolant lines are back ordered and have had it for over 5 weeks and still not fixed. That is ridicules for a vehicle with only 74k….

The rear taillights are taking in water and causing the lights to go out. This appears to be a systemic issue with Dodge Durango's as based on the fact of the high number people indicating the same issue on Dodge Durango facebook pages.

There is a design flaw with the coolant lines. The toh coolant line makes contact with the rear heater return line and creates a coolant leak in that area. Due to the friction this caused a hole in the line. My car gashed out coolant and shut off on the highway. Only one flash on the dashboard that said engine overheating. This issue is a design flaw that could be deadly. Luckily for myself I was traveling in the right line and had time to warn other drivers with hazards. Please investigate Dodge Durango vehicles for this seriously potentially deadly issue.

I was just driving then out of nowhere. No warning no lights inmitted on dash no idea the engine will shut off. Replace alternator, battery,starter,3 pcm,still no luck. Noticed that pcm could have been the so that's why I went through 3 of em. New ,use ,and refurbish one. The dealership mechanic noticed that pcm would shut off and henced (no bus) would illuminate. Happened quite often scary part is that no warning of any source would appear on freeway residential anywhere. Engine will shut off while driving.

When slowing down the fwc warning comes on and the vehicle completely shuts down. I have to put it in park and restart it. This is very unsafe, as it happens at intersections, turnpikes, sometimes when turning causing big safety issues and we are lucky has not caused a crash yet.

Sitting at drive through and driver headrest exploded and hit me in the back of the head. Thank god I was not moving at the time and my car was in park or I may have wrecked! startled me and I was dazed and confused because I couldn’t figure out what had happened! this just happened a few hours ago so I have not been able to report it or have it checked out. I did take several pictures. There were no warnings or anything and it just happened as I was sitting there! if I had been driving, it could have been catastrophic! my neck is sore and I have a headache.

Cooling system hose blew from a faulty clamp rubbing a hole in it. There’s a ton of reports of this same problem with the same model/year. All antifreeze leaked out and overheated engine.

My sunroof shattered for no apparent reason……!.

While my wife was driving our vehicle when the tire monitor light came on the dash. She made it home and showed me the tire. I thought she might have ran over an object on the road then began putting air in the tire. The tire started to inflate and rise then there was a sudden loud bang. I took the tire off the vehicle and saw that the inside sidewall of the tire blew out.

The front passenger headrest sprung out and hit my husband in the back of the head while we were driving.

I'm reporting the race track tailgate light on my 2017 Durango has been taking in water from top of the light. I have been reading about a law suit against Dodge cause of this issue on 2014 thru 2023 Dodge Durango. So im putting my complaint in on my cause its doing the same thing. Part of the lower left side on mine has shorted out due to the water leaking from the top of the race track light.

The alternator suddenly failed with no warning lights or lamps indicating a problem. I was driving when the car suddenly stalled and I managed to get home . Heavy smoke was coming from under the hood and when I raised the hood heavy smoke was coming up out of the alternator and I could smell burning wires. I had it towed to elder Dodge and they confirmed that the alternator was burnt out and it fried the pcm and other electrical components. The safety issue was it could've caught the whole engine on fire and it could have caused a wreck with traffic behind us. I contacted the fca and sent all information that they requested for reimbursement but they refuse to reimburse me for a faulty alternator that short circuited and caught on fire. I am contacting you for help with this matter so they will reimburse me for damages done to my Durango.

When I am driving around out of nowhere it will try to go into low range when it is in auto awd and low light will flicker on the dashboard.

While driving down the road, the driver headrest popped open at random, thrusting my neck and head forward. Once parked, I saw that a plastic piece had broken that holds the headrest system together.

Vehicle was parked, orange red fluid was seen leaking from the vehicle in a large puddle. Dealership mechanic that found the failure as a factory install clamp that was placed too close to 2 rear coolant lines tube causing a hole in each line almost emptying the coolant all over the ground.

Shifter knob moves freely without having foot on brake so the shifter doesn’t lock into a gear. Message appears on dash “service shifter”.

Driver headrest randomly deployed hit me in the back of the head and strained my neck.

The car has been having intermittent electrical problems and was brought to the dealer many times for repair. The "radio" system has been replaced twice after various electrical problems occurred. The car has also intermittently had a problem where the engine revs excessively and the car does not handle the way it should. It's almost like its a manual transmission that's not being shifted properly. The only way to stop the problem is to turn the car off, and back on which resolves the issues. It generally would then not recur for months. The dealer has not been able to reproduce that problem. Yesterday, while driving the car in heavy traffic, the engine revving problem happened twice. The second time I became very concerned and was trying to get out of bumper to bumper traffic to a safe place. While attempting to get to a place where I could pull the car over, I was moving forward very slowly (had released the brake, but not touched the accelerator) when the car in front of me was stopping again. I braked, and the car lurched forward with force and hit the other car. I braked harder and the car again lurched forward, hitting the other car a second time. I threw the car into park which stopped the motion. There were no serious injuries but both cars sustained damage and I called roadside assistance to tow my car to the dealership because I felt it was not safe to drive. The dealer repeatedly tells us there is nothing wrong with the car. Someone could have been killed or seriously injured. I am requesting an immediate investigation. There were no warning lights. This just happened, so the insurance has not inspected the car yet. It is at the dealership. The only "warning signs were the intermittent electrical problems which have occurred since we have owned the car. The engine revving intermittently started happening about a year ago. The problem with the car accelerating or jerking forward while breaking happened for the first time yesterday.

The sunroof spontaneously exploded and shattered all over while driving on the highway at approximately 65 miles an hour. Mother and child were in the vehicle. The sunroof was opened on "vent" position. The sunroof cover was also opened (cover inside the vehicle) mother and child sustained minor physical injuries however, this could have been a major much bigger accident with many other vehicles on the road involved.

The passenger head rest popped/exploded and juts forward and will not close back. I was advised that it is an airbag recall issue. However after checking my VIN nothing is shown listed here. On a google search it says there is a ten year unlimited mile recall.

After about 3mins of driving my vehicle I started to smell burning plastic, a couple seconds later I saw a view black squiggly lines which was smoke which made me look around. At that point I saw the usb port engulfed in flames. As I was driving I panicked and pulled over on the side of the road and looked for something to put the fire out. I thankfully had a bottle of water in my vehicle which I was able to pour over the fire to put it out. I didn’t know what to do after that as there was no available Chrysler dealership in the area I was in so I went to firestone and asked if someone could help me because I was scared to drive it not knowing if it would ignite again and my route home requires me to get on the freeway and didn’t want to risk something happening on the freeway. The guy from firestone removed the charger from the port for me and told me I needed to take it to the dealership. I called Chrysler corporate to make them aware and made a service appointment. Without the bottle of water in the car I don’t necessarily know that the situation would have ended this way since the damage is isolated to the port and my charger only from what I can see. I wanted to make this report so that this can be brought to the attention of Chrysler and the necessary recalls and be published to prevent this from happening to anyone else .

Car dies while driving at speed. Also will die at low speeds such as when turning or parking or waiting at a stop light. Sometimes have to wait before restart if dies at speed. If dies at low speed will start right back up. Dealer says no codes. Even when it died while on the techs computer he could not see a problem. These cars have been notorious for electrical problems due to totally integrated power module. Fuel relay recall did not solve the issue.

The sunroof bursted and shattered in what can only be described as an explosion. Driver and passenger were occupying the vehicle at the time the sunroof broke. The vehicle was operated in a standard manner and driven on a highway. The sunroof without having observed any cracks or dings shattered without warning. The resolving explosive noise scared both the driver and passenger, which in itself could lead to an accident if the driver had reacted differently. Some of the shattered glass fell on the occupants. The majority of the glass from the sunroof lifted off and crash down on the road behind the vehicle. The drivers brother was able to witness in his rare view mirror the moment when the glass lifted off and flew over the back of the affected vehicle. There were no vehicles driving behind the affected vehicle at the time, but the glass could have created a safety hazard to people behind and in the vicinity of the affected vehicle. The problem has not been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center, but so far to the knowledge of the owners or the affected vehicle a comparable situation has not been a reported issue at their preferred dealer. The damage is still being dealt with and at this time has not been inspected by anyone. Again the sunroof bursted without any warning signs. There was just suddenly a bang that can only be compared to a gun shot.

The interior door handle (driver side) has some kind of plastic coating on which began to peel back from the handle. It was very sharp and cut my hand.

Air bag light came on and car constantly loses power even though the battery installed is new direct from dealership. Recurring situation happens at least twice a week.
