Had driven truck earlier in day had no issues at all. Drove and sounded like it always did!! went to start it that evening to get daughter from school event and it made a horrible noise and wouldn't start! mechanic said it was starter. After 2 days of waiting for a starter that noone keeps in stock! put it on and nothing! mechanic said it was stuck flywheel. He got it to turn over but the motor was knocking very loud!! now I'm without a car because I do not have the money for a new motor!!.
Vehicle started to run a little rough. Wife was at a stop light accelerated upon green and heard a loud noise and a jerk. She nursed it home about a mile or so. Pulled into the driveway and shut it off and oil was everywhere. I looked around and discovered a hole in the engine block behind the passenger side tire about the size of my fist. Have had the Durango since it was brand new. Its always ran great. We love our Durango. Very upset that this happened. We do not have much money to spare at months end, but we needed a car so we were forced to go buy another. Would like to maybe get the Durango fixed. But that might take a little while to get the money now. Be nice if Chrysler could send me a new engine or something. I have owned a total of 5 Chrysler brand vehicles.
Went to start it for work on day and it started making a horrible noise. I got it looked at by a mechanic, was told that the engine had blown.
Tl- the contact owns a 2004 Dodge Durango. The contact started the ignition and a loud noise emitted from the engine area. The vehicle was towed to an authorized dealer for diagnosis where they advised the contact that the connecting rod fractured, which caused internal damage to the engine. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the problem. The approximate failure mileage was 71,000. Kmj.
I own a 2004 Dodge Durango 5. 7 hemi. The engine made a loud noise, I pulled over and saw oil on the frame. I had a mechanic look at it and they said a rod went through the block. I always changed the oil on schedule. The vehicle only had about 700 miles on the last oil change. The vehicle didn't give any warning before going out. I have seen lots of other people with the same problems. Chrysler needs to be held accountable in this situation.
Started my Durango as I had the day before, to a sound similar of rocks having been thrown into the motor. I immediately turned it off thinking there was something, animal or stick, stuck in motor or fan. Open hood only to find nothing visibly seen to cause such a noise. Started again to the same horrible sound and turned off immediately. Called a very reputable neighbor with lifetime experience and working experience in the motor vehicle field. Upon starting he immediately knew the problem. . . That my 81,000 fully maintained Dodge Durango that I owe 4 months payments on yet, drive 1/2 mile to work daily, with no warning whatsoever had a blown motor due to the fact that a cheap part, below previous Dodge quality had been installed and caused this to happen. We had planned on driving out of town to get my daughters eyes checked the day before but was unable to afford the gas during this time of year due to being unemployed losing home and having to take a job three times less pay than previous. Thank god daily that we did not because the outcome could have been much worse knowing we could have been traveling on interstate and had this happen. My family has always bought and supported Dodge/Chrysler vehicles but from this point forward we will no longer support due to the lack of support, quality and care of the Dodge/ Chrysler industry today! paid for your buyout again!.
I have had my truck since Feb of this year and have not had any major problems with it. The only issue that I have had is that when it rains or when we go through the car wash it stalls and acts like it wants to cut off. I informed the dealership where I purchased the car from and was told it was not a major issue and to bring in after the holidays and it was ok to continue to drive it. I have kept the maintenance current and just recently got an oil change. On christmas night, I took my father home who lives about 30 miles away from me and came straight back home and parked the truck. No issues or problems. Later the next night, I went out to start it to go to the store and it would not start. It had rained earlier that day and it was cold so I just thought that maybe I needed a jump. It was late so I didnt worry about getting one from anyone. The next morning I got up early to try to start it again and still nothing, so I asked my neighbor for a jump. When he tried to jump my truck it made a horrible noise so we stopped and I called the dealership and told them what happened. They sent two of their mechanics over to my house to try and jump it and they was shocked by the noise they heard. They initially thought it may be the starter and they also verified that all my fluids were full. They ended up towing my truck back to their dealership and a few hours later they called and told me my engine locked up. . . . This was so devastating for me to hear because they told me the repair would be $3000. I have not had the vehicle a year yet and am a single mother of two kids. This problem is very common with the same truck that I have with the hemi engine. I traded my blazer in for this one to be able to have something reliable and really love the truck but cannot believe that there has not been a recall since there have been so many of the same problems.

I have a Dodge Durango 2004 hemi with approximately 124k miles on it. The car was driving fine for me and my family until this morning when I tried to start my car, it was making a loud noise like there was rocks in the engine. It doesn't start up like normal and if it does you can't even drive it. Sounds like the engine is in pieces. I've heard a lot of Dodge hemi owner's had a lot of problems with their engine seizing up while they were driving at high speeds and everything just completely shut off on them(very dangerous). A lot of forums that I read online has the exact same problem that I'm having.

While driving at highway speed in rain, the vehicle began making a loud, almost rough roaring sound and the vehicle started sputtering as if it were going to stall. After taking an exit to investigate, the vehicle died and took multiple attempts to restart. This has happened multiple times while driving and vehicle dies in auto car washes. After reading similar posts about this problem, I'm extremely concerned this could cause a crash with a high potential of death for me, my passengers and others that may become involved.
We were driving the car and suddenly it started making this loud noise under the hood and shook. I pulled over and turned off the car. I checked to see if the oil was ok and it was. There wasn't any leaking fluids. The vehicle was towed to our home and sits in the drive. Any attempt to start it causes violent shaking loud noise. It struggles to idle and dies.

I was sitting at a stop light at 11pm heard a loud sound and the car wouldn't go any more I managed to get the car to a lot not knowing the oil had leaked out all over the ground I was stuck for 3 hours in the dark and rain waiting for my family to come looking for me I was on my way home from work so I knew the would come lookin for me just so happens I walked off and left my cell on my way to work had the car towed the next day found out something came lose and put a hole in the engine block I guess that made the oil leak out all at once I bought this car used traded my Ford in for it drove it for 7months and haven't used it since im still paying notes on it and cant afford to get it fixed cost sooo much begging for rides to and from wok every day bout to go nuts this should be recalled its happened to alot of theses brand of car love my car but its a piece of junk its just apretty boby I need my car fixed!!or I my lose my job somebody do something please!.
I own a 2004 5. 7l hemi magnum Dodge Durango. . When I was leaving school the other night my Durango started fine. When I pulled out onto the road I only got about 1/2 mile before my engine made a horrible noise and jerked real hard, my check engine light came on as did my oil light. As I was pulling off the road I lost the power steering as well, smoke poured out from under my Durango. I got out as I was afraid it was going to catch fire. I called for help and waited on the side of the road. The tow truck guy got there and told me there was oil all underneath of my truck. I had it towed to my local shop to see what was wrong. Guess what? a rod has been pushed through my engine and now I need a new one. My Durango only has 85,200 miles on it. I am really mad, I have a daughter who could have been with me and we could have been on the interstate when this happened, I hate to think that was possible and what the outcome could have been. This is a serious issue and I am surprised no recall has been made. We as consumers have the right to a vehicle that is safe for us, the law is supposed to prevent this from re-occuring. I can se if this was an isolated incident, but its not. I have started looking and I see thousands of complaints and that is only on a couple boards/forums, how is this possible, who is responsible. I encourge all Durango owners who have had this issue to step forward and complain, together we can make a difference. I already contacted my local news, and I will be sending letters to reid bigland (the president of Chrysler corp). Chrysler/Dodge got a bailout when they were ready to be bankrupt, but where does that help the average consumer. We are all having difficult times in this economy, where is the help for us? we are left to pay well over 6000 for engine repairs that Dodge/Chrysler corp is responsible for. We all need justice here.
My well maintained garage kept 2004 5. 7l Durango with 119,000 miles with absolutely no warning failed to start one morning after sitting for about 3 days. It made a loud noise. I had it towed to the dealer and was told that it had siezed and I would need a new engine. The cost would be $7200. The only problem I had previously was that it would stall during extreme rain storms but it occurred infrequently and only under extreme conditions. The dealer had supposedly fixed the problem with this a few months earlier. I bought this vehicle brand new in 2004 and had always maintianed it exactly as reccomended.
I have a Dodge 2004 Durango. My children and I were heading to the drs when we were driving about 40 miles and hour through an intersection and all of a sudden we heard this loud noise. I thought I hit something so I pulled over. Come to find out, I blew a hole in my engine. Not lights, no warning! I have gotten estimates which equal between $5,500 - $6,000 to replace the engine. I have been doing some investigative work and come to find out, this is a major problem in the Dodge Durango that is not being addressed by the manufacturer. I find my story to be the same that so many have experienced. I too had my engine cut out while I was driving anywhere from 25 miles and hour to 60 miles and hour with no warning. Many times while I was turning losing my power steering. This is a major safety issue not to mention now a major economic issue. I do not have the money to repair this without going in debt. I need the assistance NHTSA with this situation. Please help me & my family!.

The vehicle was taken to a mechanic but the mechanic was unable to diagnose the failure. The dealer was notified who advised that they would need to replace the engine. The manufacturer was notified who offered no assistance. The failure mileage was 93,000. Kmj.
I have to replace the engine on my 2004 Dodge Durango. The truck started overheating and I had the thermostat changed, now I can not accelerate, the truck is making a loud rumbling noise. For the first 3 yrs of owning my truck, it worked wonders, it never gave me any problems. And then just one day it overheated, it kept cutting off on my while in idle. I am a single mother of 4 children and now I have not vehicle to get back and forth. Dodge Chrysler needs to do something about the faults in their vehicles and take responsibility.
I am the owner of an auto repair shop, vehicle was driven by me with no engine running problem, no check engine light, no noises or sounds to indicate a problem. Vehicle reason for being at shop was the four wheel drive was not working. After replacing the transfer case motor, I turned key to start vehicle, heard a loud noise, got out of vehicle, inspected, we found that the engine had thrown the number eight connecting rod, thru the engine block. I have photo's, witnesses and documentation.

Wife drove 2004 Durango with 5. 7l hemi to work last night, when started it to come home made loud noise. I trailered it home, called mechanic to look at it. He said I had brooken rod in engine. Oil&filters changed every 3000 miles. No problems until this. Very upset Dodge will not cover this. Needs new motor!!!!!!!! only 123,000 miles.
I use our 2004 Dodge Durango with 5. 7 hemi engine to take our 3 children to school. We have taken great care of this vehicle, maintaining everything! 4 days ago we got into the vehicle to go to the store and at start up the engine made a horrible sound. We stopped trying to start it then tried once again. My husband opened the hood smelled oil and looked underneath the vehicle to find that the engine had thrown a rod and there was a hole in the side of the engine. We had no warning whatsoever. The vehicle made no other sound prior and drove 100% fine the day before. After searching, we have found many people have had this same problem. Now we are in pursuit of any type of justice from this. Our extended vehicle warranty expired 2 months ago. When we called the dealer to see if there was anything they could do for us we were told "no" and were also told we were the 2nd people to call with the same problem with this engine. It doesnt seem to be the Durango alone. . . But the 5. 7 hemi engine beween certain years.

I went out to start my vehicle, on the morning of March 28, to let it warm up, and when I tried to start the car, it made a horrible noise so I immediately turned the car off. My husband came out and popped the hood to see if what was making the noise, was visible. It wasn't. We called a mechanic and he came to our house to look at the vehicle and after he tried to start it, he immediately turned it off too. He told us he really thought it was the motor and that it had thrown a rod. He told us not to drive it anywhere, which I wouldn't have anyway, considering the noise it was making! we called a wrecker and had it towed to a mechanic. He called us to tell us it definitely was the motor. We have to get a new motor which is going to cost us somewhere in the neighborhood of $4-5,000! we do not have that kind of money!!!! from what I have read on several websites, this isn't the first time this has happened to a 2004 Durango with a 5. 7 hemi. We contacted the Dodge dealership where I purchased the vehicle and the literally went all around the subject of how many times this has happened to others and if there was something Chrysler could do to help! they want $6,000 just for a motor! that doesn't include labor! you've got to be kidding me!!! I contacted one place checking on a replacement engine and the gentleman said "you're lucky, most people with that year Durango, have already had to replace their motors 2-3 times!" lucky, are you serious? who could afford to do that 2-3 times??? something needs to be done about this! Chrysler needs to step up and back their name up by taking care of this problem, not just for me, but for everyone who has had the same problem. Please help! thank you in advance for your any assistance you can give.
Catastrophic engine failure. Dodge Durango 2004 5. 7 hemi engine. Has 84,000 miles. Which is low miles for this type of engine. Drove the SUV the day before and was running fine. No warning lights etc. Next day go out to start it up and hear loud noises coming from engine. Had it towed to the dealer and he said a rod broke. Maintance was up to date. This shouldn't be happening at 84,000 miles. This is a design flaw or the use of below standards parts. Only option is to replace engine. These cars cost 35,000 dollars they should not be having a major engine failure of this type. This engine needs to be recalled and fixed. People are clearly being sold a defected product.
The contact owns a 2004 Dodge Durango. The contact stated that when starting the vehicle, an abnormal sound came from the engine and the vehicle would not start. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer where a diagnostic was performed, which determined that the connecting rod was damaged. The dealer replaced the connecting rod however, the repair did not remedy the defect and the failure later recurred. The contact inspected the vehicle and discovered a two-inch hole in the engine block. The contact took the vehicle back to the dealer where the dealer indicated that the connecting rod was damaged and caused the two-inch hole in the engine block. The dealer replaced the engine as a repair. The failure mileage was 72,000.
I own a 2004 Dodge Durango, v8, 5. 7 with a hemi & a 102,000 miles on it. I am the orginial owner & have babied this car from the get go. We recently just replaced the ball joints on the front end, tuned it up & was heading to get the tires rotated & balanced for our family spring break vacation. When my husband went out to start it, it made a horrible noise & threw a rod through my engine, intake & oil pan. I am highly disappointed in the money I have put in this car to keep it maintenanced & what I paid for it, to just blow with no warning. After reading numerous complaints about this year & engine, Dodge needs to step up & take responsiblity & make a recall. I am now going to be out thousands of dollars on a car I still owe on & my vacation has been ruined & had to be canceled. I am thankful however that I was not driving when this happened with my little boy in the car. Totally disgusted with Dodge for not recalling this engine sooner.
Started Dodge Durango 2005 and there was a very loud sound coming from the engine. Took truck to mechanic and they are telling me that I need a new engine! it is not operative! metal shards were coming out of the oil.
