1 Noises During Shifting problem of the 2016 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 02/15/2019

It was noted shortly after purchasing the vehicle that the car will shift really hard when downshifting from 2nd to 1st. The hard shit will sometimes cause a jerking motion in the car. This problem continues today. I have taken the care many times to the dealership. They have told me each time that either a software updated was needed or they could not replicate the issue. Please note the issue is not every time. The problem does come and go. Last Friday, 2/15, the car would not go into reverse. I would put the car in reverse and it was as if I were still in park. After a few tries, I restarted the car and it went into reverse with no problem. The next day Saturday 2/16, after I placed the car in park, I took my foot off the brake and the car lunged forward as if it were still in gear. I again restarted the car, this time a few times, just to see if the car would do it again. It did not. Yesterday, this has happened before and was taken in for service, a noise would come from the shifter knob area each time the brake was pressed. The know has been replaced once before by bob baker dealership. On top of these issue, the electronics have gone out on the dashboard where the climate control, radio, etc are located. I have an appointment to try and get this issues address at bob baker dealership. I have 20 pages of service history on this car, most of it are regarding the very hard downshifting. Below I will mark the date the most recent issue happened with the car.

2 Noises During Shifting problem of the 2005 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 08/12/2016

Car stalls at stop light. No reason. Car started shifting into all wheel drive by itself. I could hear it shifting as I opened driver door, and car was not on. Did not know what the noise was. Car sounded like it was grinding the gears when moved into drive. Towed to shop. Transmission guy could not figure out why it changed all by itself. Cargo lamp is one if I open rear hatch. It will only go off if I close the hatch twice. Now airbag light is on, since new battery was replaced.

3 Noises During Shifting problem of the 2005 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 09/19/2014

Problem started with "srv 4 wd" light on dash going on and going off at random while driving. Soon after this initial problem, with vehicle parked and ignition off,4 wheel drive attempts to engage and disengage. The engage/disengage process may occur 2 to 6 times. The sound of this engagement/disengagement is clearly audible. On one occasion the vehicle actually engaged four wheel drive but there was no light on the dash indicating the vehicle was in 4 wheel drive. After driving the vehicle approximately . 5 miles, 4 wheel drive disengaged with a very loud shift noise. At this same time, the "4 lo" display light on the dash began to flicker. It now blinks as if the vehicle is attempting to engage "4 lo" while the vehicle is in motion and the selector set to all wheel drive. I am still able to engage and disengage four wheel drive using the selector switch on the dash manually as is the case with normal 4 wheel drive operation for this vehicle. At this point the vehicle has not switched from awd to 4 wd while in motion at highway speed. I am aware however this is a situation which can occur during vehicle operation while experiencing these 4 wheel drive malfunctions.

4 Noises During Shifting problem of the 2005 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 06/23/2014

As I approached my vehicle and used the remote to open the doors, I heard a noise under the vehicle like gears were shifting on their own without the vehicle even running. I started the vehicle and started driving. When I went into a parking lot and turned left to park, it was like someone was putting on the brakes making it difficult for me to turn and to accelerate--felt like I was in 4wd despite not shifting to 4wd from awd. I nearly hit the car next to mine because I had to accelerate so hard to get into the spot without getting hit from the rear. I turned the car off and let it sit for 1/2 hour and restarted it and drove home. When I let the car sit in the garage, I was in the garage and heard gears shifting on their own while the vehicle was not running. This has already happened 3 times and it is quite scary! if I try to turn left and this happens on the road, I could get into a serious accident.

5 Noises During Shifting problem of the 2006 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 08/01/2013

The 4wd service light came on and the 4wd will switch on and off automatically without manually being changed. It has a very loud shifting sound that I notice when the vehicle is on and off. The 4wd will turn on as I'm driving down the road at high speeds, and taking turns it will come on and make a very loud popping noise. I happens constantly and is hard to drive during my home health job. When it gets into 4hi or 4lo I am stuck in some places because it will not turn properly. I can not get it to switch out of 4wd. I have taken it to Dodge dealers and they say they have never heard of this problem. This has become a very frustrating problem.

6 Noises During Shifting problem of the 2011 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 06/30/2011

I purchased a 2011 Dodge Durango crew v6 last year and I have had nothing but problems with it. When I accelerate at any speed, my vehicle does not respond. The vehicle jumps and would shift gears. The transmission feels like its slipping and does not have the power to accelerate. Also, when I press the brake the back end makes a loud thumping noise like its shifting gears and it jerks forward. The first time I brought it in to the dealership, they updated the software and could not duplicate the problem. I took it back in to the dealership and had a mechanic ride with me and I am still waiting for my issues to be resolved.

8 Noises During Shifting problem of the 1998 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 01/31/2004

I started having problems with my transmission shifting on its own and the 4x4 selector would slip and make an awful noise when you put it in gear. On 31 January 2004, my transmission went out and left my 2-toddlers and I stranded approximately 2-hours away from home. It is a 1998 Dodge Durango. It is ironic that an older gentlemen had asked me if I had problems a month earlier with my transmission. When I spoke with a couple repair shops (even a technician at hilikelly Dodge in daphne, al), all of them stated that it was a common problem with the Dodge transmissions.

10 Noises During Shifting problem of the 1999 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 04/15/2003

Transmission went out suddenly. We noticed it making a whining noise when shifted into reverse. This stopped when shifted into drive. After approx. Two days the noise stayed in drive. Changed the fan belt and checked other minor things. Read manuals and suspected trans trouble, took it in and it needed to be rebuilt. The pan was filled with pieces of metal. We also had to have the left upper ball joint replaced at 55,548 miles, this was going on a long time and caused significant tire wear.

11 Noises During Shifting problem of the 1998 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 10/15/2001

Transmission hesitates between 2nd and 3rd gear. When it does shift into 3rd gear the vehicle surges. When shifting into reverse the transmisson gives a clunk noise. Took vehicle to dealership for diagnosis and repair. Was told from dealer the minimum repair would cost $1400-$1500 but could be more. I opted for a local repair facility. I was shown a complete service and technical bulletin describing the problem and repair for Dodge vehicles. The local repair facility service owner had just gotten back from a training seminar on this problem. This really sounded odd, as the dealer when asked by me if there was a class problem in transmissions denied any. Then why would they print manuals and train personnel for problems that do not normally occur. The local repair facility performed hydraulic pressure testing and determined all pressure parameters were being met. Then changed all transmission fluids to a higher viscosity. Since this was done, I have not experienced any shifting hesitation or problems. The dealer when pressured would only offer 10% off the repair costs. Dodge regional refused to assist in any way. I have personally talked to 4 individuals who own Dodges and have had similar problems.
