Heard from a friend with a 2011 Durango that they had low power steering fluid when they had their maintenance check up. I had been hearing a mild grinding noise when I would move my steering wheel at times so I took it in to have it checked. Sure enough, the power steering fluid level was at a very low level. They had to put some in and then schedule an appointment to come back and look for a leak. Came back, found no leak and blamed it on the manufacturer for having an air bubble or something. Friend was right. I guess it is common. Check your power steering fluid levels!.
Brought truck in for engine light on & no power on March 9, 2013. . . Claimed spark plugs put in by manufacturer were 30,000 miles plugs. . . . Who does that anymore. While doing the tune up, mechanic noticed fluid dripping. Power steering pump was leaking. Put new pump in (March 12, 2013) which seemed to be bad. Ordered another pump (arrived March 15, 2013) which worked but the rack in pinion steering blew seals on both ends. Ordered part which took several days to come in (hopefully March 20, 2013). The mechanic believes the rack in pinion was not right from the beginning. This would account for the front tires wearing quickly & funny. It would also account for the noise heard on the passenger side front end when hitting bumps. Both these issues were brought to the dealerships attention prior but nothing was done. Claimed they didn't hear the sound when test driving. Hopefully this will be resolved today March 20, 2013. This is one of many major problems we have had with this vehicle. At least we were Smart & bought the extended warranty when we purchased the vehicle. We now know if we bring the vehicle in for a simple repair, an entire system will be replaced.

Neither the dealer nor the manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 65,375.

For the second time in eight years I must replace the power steering return hose assembly because corrosion where the metal line passes through a rubber bushing has caused the line to begin leaking power steering fluid.

Steering problems related to linkage affected by brake resivoir leakage onto linkage to the gear box. Fluid ate rubber off of the "joints" that look to be like that of a "u-joint. " the first time was a safety issue involving an "oversteer" situation and the underlying condition was not explained or repaired. The linkage was replaced. One year or so later the Durango began to repeat the above situation on an interstate highway at speeds of over 65 miles per hour. Again the linkage was replaced and the master cylinder {not including the resivoir} was replaced at my expense due to the age of my vehicle {or lack of warranty}. The problem still exsists because I have no job to pay for repairs or a different vehicle. I have replaced linkage x2 and master cylinder for this situation, also had axel hubs {sealed units} fail due to dry bearing, both sides front. Oem replacement parts both failed due to dry bearings in less than 12 months. This also caused a dangerous condition at highway speeds. Wobble and oversteering conditions. Prior to these problems the rear sway bar links had disintegrated and were replaced. This vehicle has done no off road 4x4 action for as long as I have owned it. Thank you !!.
