The front passenger side headrest safety mechanism deployed as I was driving down the road and upon looking at it, a piece inside is broken. When the headrest deployed, it hit my passenger in the head, pushing him forward and give him a headache it came out so hard and fast I brought the car to the dealership today, 9/3/24 they said other year, Durango have a recall, but my year is not one of them there were no warning lights.

I was sitting in my car in the car line to drop my children off at school and the passenger seat headrest busted open and scared us 3 half to death. Luckily no one was sitting in the passenger seat, I believe if someone was it would have caused a severe headache and neck pain. I'm so fortunate it did not happen while I was driving either, who knows what my reaction would have been. Apparently this has happened to other vehicles including Dodge Durangos which is what I own. I took it to the dealership like Dodge customer service informed me to do and they weren't sure why it busted open and can't compress it back. The whole thing has to be replaced, $1,200. Dodge customer service doesn't feel like it's an issue and won't replace it. I've had a hard time getting any information from Dodge customer service and I can't seem to get them to call me back. My car has not been wrecked and this is definitely a manufacturing defect that needs to be addressed!! there was no warning at all that this was going to happen and no lights have come on in my car to let me know it did. Dodge needs to put out a recall on the headrest.
The ahr system for the passenger seat failed. While sitting in the school line for one of my kids, the passenger headrest (ahr system) malfunctioned and protruded forward. If the force behind the protrusion would have hit someone it could have caused a concussion, if it would have been the driver, could have caused an accident if in motion. Having issues with Dodge warranting for the repair, have had dealership look at it, said it needs to be repaired, and I am currently working on a case with Dodge itself. No warning lamps were on and have not came on since the issue. This is a manufacturing defect and should be covered under the x88.
Unknown, my active headrest deployed without an accident. I would think this could cause an accident when I was driving. Lucky it was the passenger headrest.

While causally driving down the road, without warning, the passenger headrest on my 2013 Dodge Durango violently "exploded" forward. Thankfully, my son who was riding in the passenger seat, was sleeping with his head bent forward so it didn't hit him. Upon inspection (by myself), the active head restraint feature is held together by plastic, which obviously failed. I searched on the internet and this appears to be a common problem, and each time it's due to this plastic clip failing. This is totally unacceptable. I have the headrest available for inspection. It was brought to the dealer who wants $950 to replace it. They said the warranty expired less than a year ago. Again based on internet research, apparently Dodge/chysler just recently extended the warranty to 10 years for 2014 models (and possibly 2013?). How convenient to extend a warranty short of the period covered. Not only shouldn't I be responsible for the cost of replacement for such a dangerous feature, but what happens when I'm driving and the driver's side suddenly fails and I'm violently hit in the back of the head and swerve into on-coming traffic? ironic that these "active head restraint" features are causing injuries instead of preventing them. These headreasts need to be recalled immediately before more people are injured or killed.

The component that failed was the passengers headrest. It automatically deployed while driving with no collision or hit. I was able to stop and park right away because it hit my daughter on the head. I just wanted to make sure she was good. This happened today 07/16/2024 so will call my dealer tomorrow to see if they can do something about it and hopefully they can fix it. For now, I thank god my daughter is good. I did no report with insurance, or police. I had no warning before it happened.

Passenger side active headrest deployed without accident while sitting in driveway no one in or around vehicle and also not running.
Active head restraint broke and popped open. The headrest are available for inspection.
I was driving along thankfully at a low rate of speed when suddenly my passenger seat head rest popped really loud and sprang open. Scared the crap out of me, and caused me to swerve really hard and almost out of my lane. Thank god no one was sitting in the passenger seat at the time!!.
The passenger headrest opened up during normal driving and hit the passenger in the head, hard. Upon inspection the brackets that hold some sort of spring-loaded mechanism appear to have cracked/broken to allow the head rest to open up.
The passenger side head rest deployed for no reason. Has not been in any accidents. Shop states it would cost me $850 to get fixed. I believe this is a defect of the part since I was just going down the road when this happened. As I said before I have not been in any accidents. Please send me a replacement for this vehicle or put out a recall on this. I have seen that there is multiple people having this issue.
On may 25, 2024 my wife, son, and I were sitting at a stop light on north franklin street in christiansburg, va at approximately 16:40 hours when we heard a loud pop in the vehicle and my wife's head was pushed forward by the passenger side seat head rest, causing pain to my wife's head and neck, and shoulder muscles. Upon inspection of the head rest, it had become separated in the middle (pictures attached). Vehicle is equipped with the active head restraint system. My wife has not received medical attention yet but is quite sore this morning. We will contact our dealer to replace the head rest (and the driver's side head rest) and request the defective head rest be returned to us so it is available for NHTSA inspection. The vehicle has not yet been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance rep, or others yet. There were no warning lamps, messages, or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure. This happened suddenly without any warning while we were stopped at a traffic light. Our safety was put at risk by the sudden failure and violent expansion to the head rest causing pain to my wife. Had this occurred on the driver's side while the vehicle was in motion, it could have caused a motor vehicle crash resulting in severe injury, property damage, or even death.

The passenger side active head restraint headrest deployed while driving. Upon activation, it struck the passenger in the head causing dizziness and pain. According to a few online forums, this has been an issue for some time. No one has inspected my vehicle so far but me. The headrest is unable to be reset. There was no warning and no lights or messages indicating the failure.
Was driving and noticed my headrest was actually touching my head, it had deployed like it should when you hit an accident. Nothing was hit.
Passenger seat active head restraint deployed without warning. Vehicle was not running or involved in an accident at time of deployment.
Active headrest deployed on its own. Never been in an accident. Dealer has verified. Unable to use seat because headrest sits too far forward. Fortunately my son wasn't sitting in the seat when it happened.
My fairly new teen driver drove the car to the gym and the headrest basically “exploded” onto the back of his head with a swift blow. He had a very bad headache and was really freaked out. There were no lights, no notice, no impact. Just out of the blue drivers side. Called local dealership to see what it could be and apparently the pin can break or the plastic holding the pin and the airbag restraint type system in the headrest will just explode open as if in an accident. He said no recalls and out of warranty. How can this not be a serious safety issue??? my inexperienced teen driver could have been so stunned he caused an accident! anyways they said it would be roughly $1100 to replace entire headrest because there is no option to repair it once deployed. Can we still drive it? if we don’t have that $ now.

Passenger side active headrest deployed without warning. No lights/ alarms on dash display.
The active head rest restraint deployed on the driver side while driving. The plastic holding the rod failed causing this to happen. Not very safe and concerned about the passenger side deploying.
1. Active head rest inadvertent deployment driver's side 2. Seat warmers and steering wheel warmer won't turn off unless vehicle is turned off and on again.
While driving down the interstate, the passenger headrest deployed and hit my husband in the back of the head, jarring him and hurting his neck. This is the second time this has happened, the first time was on the driver’s side and Dodge repaired the issue. The plastic clips holding the metal latching mechanism snapped and the headrest deployed. I called the dealership and was told there were no recalls. There were no warning lights or signs that this was going to happen. At this time I have not turned it into insurance or filed a police report because it was a faulty piece of equipment within the car. If this would have happened on the driver side, it could have caused a wreck or knocked the driver unconscious. Even in the passenger seat, this causes serious injury concerns to the neck and head.
Upon arriving home, I parked the car in the garage. As I was collecting my belongings to exit the car, the driver's headrest "exploded" sharply striking me in the back of the head. While I was uninjured - beyond the resulting headache - this appears to be a defect with the vehicle. On inspection, it appears the plastic retaining bar failed causing the headrest to separate.
Headrest exploded while I was driving. Hit me in the head. Gave me a concussion. Dealership says there is no recall. I have to pay out of pocket. This is a safety feature. I am not paying for the repairs.
Sitting at drive through and driver headrest exploded and hit me in the back of the head. Thank god I was not moving at the time and my car was in park or I may have wrecked! startled me and I was dazed and confused because I couldn’t figure out what had happened! this just happened a few hours ago so I have not been able to report it or have it checked out. I did take several pictures. There were no warnings or anything and it just happened as I was sitting there! if I had been driving, it could have been catastrophic! my neck is sore and I have a headache.
Was sitting in the car while parked and the drivers side headrest deployed.
I was driving with my 16yr old and the headrest popped open and hit her in the back of the head.
The driver’s side headrests randomly popped out while I was driving, causing possible whiplash.
Vehicle was sitting, not driven and parked for a couple days, got into the car and the saw the front passenger headrest airbag had deployed. Vehicle has not been in an accident or been damaged.
Headrest deployed under normal driving conditions.
The active restraint in the driver’s side headrest deployed on it’s own without the vehicle being in a collision.
Drivers active headrest deployed while driving hitting driver in the head while vehicle was in motion.
While stopped at a traffic light, the drivers side front headrest exploded forward hitting my wife in the back of the head. Upon inspection, I noticed part of the plastic hinge inside the headrest had broken or sheared off. Although it did not appear to have caused her personal injury, had this occurred while driving it very well could have caused an accident, due to the impact and loud noise.
The truck was in park and idling. We were not moving. There were no abnormal lights on the gage cluster. Out of knowwhere the head rest exploded forward and hit the back of my father-in-laws head. He is ok but it was a hard hit and left him sore. Luckily we were not driving on the freeway.
Jan 24 , 2023. Drivers active headrest was deployed. No incidents/accidents and must be replaced looks like the plastic retaining hooks malfunctioned. Must be replaced. Unknown exactly what happened. Hea.
The passenger head rest popped/exploded and juts forward and will not close back. I was advised that it is an airbag recall issue. However after checking my VIN nothing is shown listed here. On a google search it says there is a ten year unlimited mile recall.
