1998 Dodge Durango. Upper and lower ball joints. I had thought I needed shocks and an alignment and brought the vehicle to my mechanic who told me that the vehicle needed upper and lower ball joints, tie rod end and idler arm. The vehicle has become unsafe to drive. The vehicle was never abused, and 90% of the miles are highway miles. I have read many accounts of the exact same problem and believe further investigation and recall is necessary.

Upper and lower ball joints have failed at 65000 miles on 98' Dodge Durango. Also had to replace pitman and idler arms.
I have a 1999 Dodge Durango with 54,000 miles that is already needing new front ball joints. The vehicle has started shaking at various speeds. This problem was diagnosed by a garage mechanic who is not connected to Dodge. After checking with the local Dodge service manager, who checked the ball joints, I was told the ball joints were within specification and that a new idler arm was needed. I have since replace all 4 tires and shocks but the problem still persists. I'm concerned that I am driving a safety hazard.

The upper control arms, ball joints, and idler on my 1998 Dodge Durango with 38,000 miles were severely worn as identified during a routine inspection. I was forced to repair these items so to prevent a failure of the front suspension. I contacted Dodge regarding this defect yet they would not cover the repair. This is clearly a defect in the Durango and should be covered by the manufacturer.
Discovered information about defect on the 2000 durrango from the media this morning 3/4/2004 close friend considered family was killed in a head on collision on highway 156 in may of 2002. Entire family still to day was wondering what happened to make his vehicle go into another lane which cause the crash at 3:00pm. Autopsy report no drugs, no alcohol, no physical evidence of a heart attack or strock. It's been bothering us from that day as to what happened. On the picture of the vehicle front page of the hollister paper the durrango he was driving it's clear as day that the wheel on the driver side is bent and could have snap causing the fatal head on accident that not only killed leonardo marquez upon impact but also killed the women driver of the other vehicle upon impact. The article is on the front page of the free lance local paper hollister California tueday may 14th 2002 vol 129 issue 149. This steering defect information was never known by myself or the family until discovered on kpix channel 5 news 3/4/2004 which lead me to this web site.

When making a left or right turn there is a grinding noise in the driver's side front wheel. Took vehicle to dealer, and dealer stated that upper & lower ball joints were defective due to rust. Also, idler arm was replaced. However, none of the fixes corrected the problem.
