The transmission oil cooler has broken at the seams and leaked twice on my vehicle, resulting in a loss of transmission fluid, causing the vehicle not to move and to potentially be a fire hazard. This first happened in 2017 and I had the unit replaced; then happened again in 2019. Must be a defect. Now I no longer feel safe driving the car.

The contact owns a 2012 Dodge Durango. The contact stated that an abnormal burning odor was present in the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to sumter Chrysler Dodge Jeep & ram (2662 broad street, sumter, SC, 29150) where it was diagnosed that the transmission fluid line fractured and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired due to the parts having to be ordered. The local dealer instructed the contact to make certain that the area of the leakage remained clean of oil. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 100,000.
Our Durango has had major issues since the day we bought it. We have nearly died in three occassions due to malfunctioning of the vehicle for issues the manufacturer was well aware of and did not address in a timely fashion. We have spent thousands upon thousands of dollars on repairs including replacing the tipm, altenator (twice), brake booster, #2 engine cylinder, transmission intercooler, and dozens of other issues. We have had to do this out of pocket because Dodge wont assist until there is a recall made and then forces us to drive a dangerous vehicle because there are not parts for the recall for several months if not a year. This recent issue the car kept bucking and kicking drive driving. Very clearly there are transmission issues. In all the forums, it is a known defect and yet again Dodge does nothing about it. There is clear evidence Dodge knew and continues to know of many faulty leaking seals and missing seals for the transmission and ac condenser, yet will not cover them. When we took the vehicle in to the dealership bc it was leaking fluids and the transmission was bucking and kicking. When they evaluated it, they found a bad alternator assembly and a power steering leak plus a transmission leak. (see attached invoice). Some was covered under warranty (as we previously paid out of pocket ourselves to replace the alternator so there was a warranty on it) and the rest was not. Again we had to fork out more money for known defect issues of Dodge. The bucking and kicking occurred randomly without notice as we drove down the road. There were also electrical outages randomly as well and periods of uncontrollable acceleration with no control of the vehicle. Its important to note: we had no issues with the ac at all. It would run cold and only have issues when random electrical outages occurred.

I was traveling on i99 southbound and all of a sudden my vehicle downshift from 4th gear to 3rd. I pulled over to investigate but couldn't find anything wrong. I turned the vehicle off waited about 5 minutes and turned my vehicle back on. I positioned the gear shift lever to drive (d) and started driving again. I noticed a lack of acceleration as though the transmission was stuck in a high gear. I had the transmission fluid drained, the filters replaced and had the transmission refilled with new transmission fluid. I check the transmission fluid level each week to see if I have a leak but no leaks were detected. This has been a continuing problem and the dealer quote me a figure over $2000. I am a disabled vietnam veteran and live on my disability right now. I cannot afford this expensive repair.

Power train:automatic transmission fluid leaking from transmission oil cooler. Significant amount of transmission fluid has leaked out before the leak was detected. Transmission performance / damage could have resulted from lack of fluid. The loss of transmission fluid could cause the transmission to function improperly and the vehicle to stop accelerating, increasing the risk of a crash.
Was having problems with our car starting and took it in and was advised that there was a problem with the tipm our warranty did not cover the repairs so had to wait about 4 months to fix it as it was a $1200. 00 out of pocket expense. After they fixed that problem only a year after I bought the vehicle they advised that my trans cooler was leaking transmission fluid and it would cost apporximately $900. 00 to fix that. My CO-worker has the same model Durango and has the same problem. Poor manufacturing I guess, I hope they issue a recall this is ridiculous to have a car only two years and have to make two major repairs on it. Not happy with the Dodge Durango at all!!!.
My Durango steering had been out of control I took it to a mechanic and both front ball joints are bad and it is leaking transmission fluid from the front seal. It is costing 700. 00 to be fixed. This is money I do not have. I have owned the car 1 and a half years. It was supposed to be reliable transportation.
