I currently have 65,000 miles on a 2003 Dodge Durango slt plus. This vehicle is 4x4 and has never been used for towing. I was getting a knocking noise in the front end at anything over 2700 rpms. Also, I was having a drastic lose of power on this Durango as well. I took it to my transmission mechanic and it was found to be trouble in the transmission. I am having to get the transmission rebuilt already at 65,000 miles.

8 Transmission Noise problem of the 2000 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 11/13/2004

Automatic transmission went out completely after 58,000 miles, just under 5 years of use. The vehicle was serviced regularly for all recommended preventative maintenance per vehicle handbook. In addition, it was taken in for transmission check-up once during the first 36,000 miles and was informed that everything was okay. I still felt there was a problem due to the fact that there was a high pitched whinning noise coming from the transmission. Also transmission seemed like it was slipping.

Failure Date: 01/01/2003

After two weeks of purchasing our (2 years old @ that time)durango, as we were driving we heard a loud screaching noise, we found a piece that appearantly broke off, it had to do with the brakes we were told. Later our transmission wasnt functioning properly, it needed new sensor. When steering it screaches (had problem right after purchasing) and its been getting worse, we took it to dealer and they flushed power steering fluid and we also had to have right ball joint replaced at the same time. When steering it still sounds bad. We had to replace the battery a year after purchasing one at the dealership and a month after that our transmission went out. Dealer wanted to charge $3700. 00. We took it somewhere else, hope to pick up today from shop will be paying $2570. 00.

13 Transmission Noise problem of the 2002 Dodge Durango

Failure Date: 01/05/2002

Purchased Durango new Jan 2002 in kentucky. Within 6 months Dodge recalled it to replace whole back axle assembly (Dodge stated it was too small for Durango). Since owning, when putting into reverse the transmission hesitates, and the vehicle barely moves (dealer stated could not find any problem). In alaska the check engine light comes on when going from warm garage into cold outdoors, stays on for a week (dealer could not find anything wrong). Loud pounding noise when traveling above 40 mph with back windows down. Durango has less than 20,000 miles and back seat shows considerable wear where seat belt latch contacts seat (poor design/placement of latch).
