Pulled into driveway and put car in park to get out to grab the mail. Uponretrieving the mail, I turned around to witness the vehicle rolling on my driveway and crashing through a close garage door. The vehicle apparently jumped out of gear as it was not moving when I got out of the vehicle and walked towards the mailbox.
The vehicle was running and in park, rolled into another parked vehicle about 5ft away. Damage to both vehicles due to impact. Seems to have shifted out of gear on its own.

2006 Dodge Durango shifts out of gear without key installed in ignition. My three year old son climbed up into the driver seat and shifted the vehicle into neutral without a key, and rolled down a hill with just him in the car and crashed into a tree. No one was seriously hurt but the circumstances could have been alot worse. There is a recall out there for this year, make , and model Durango but my VIN number was not included, the recall is for a "shifter pawl improperly installed". The vehicle is in the shop being repaired and photos of the item will be taken when the vehicle is torn apart. For some reason Chrysler denied my claim to assume financial responsibility because they stated my vehicle had 90,000 miles and was not covered under factory warranty, although it was there mistake that caused the accident to begin with. The vehicle could have very well had this problem for the last 80,000 miles, but know one ever tried to shift it out of park before without the keys. Total damage to car has not been totaled yet, but is estimated to cost $5,000 to $8,000 dollars.

Transmission shifts hard after deceleration then acceleration. Noticeable "clunk" when accelerating. Sometimes will slip out of gear when going from reverse to drive.
The automatic shifter would slip out of gear. It states that it is in drive but when foot applied to gas vehicle doesn't move like in neutral gear. Taken to dealership nothing done. The vehicle has only 45,000 and needs a new transmission which will cost 1,500 to 2,000 for a rebuilt. This is unbelievable for a vehicle with so few miles. Not only did I pay over $30,000 for this vehicle now I have to spend money that I do not have to repair a transmission that should have done this in the first place and it seems like your dealers don't want to deal with the problem or at least help with fixing it in the first place. This vehicle was taken several times and all that was done was putting transmission fluid in and then when warranty was up I was told that there was a problem and that I would have to pay for it. I will never buy another Dodge in my life time or will I ever refer anyone to a Dodge dealer.

At 85000 miles I started having significant problems with the transmission. When first started in the morning the transmission does not shift out of first gear until the tach reads 2500 rpm. This causes a check engine light to come on because the transmission is sending a fault code to the computer. Also there are many many time that the car bogs down when trying to accelerate and then will finally kick into gear however passing speed is very very poor. I had the problem diagnosed and was told it is going to cost well over 1500. 00 to repair which is why I have yet to have it done because quite frankly I cannot afford that right now. That is how I found out abnout this complaint service because I was told that 98 Durangos have had this problem since the car was built and the more research that I do on it the more I discover that there is truth to that statement. There is no way that a transmission should go out that quickly. I have never used this vehicle to tow anything and it has just been used to go back and forth to work and other normal family errands. I have never taken it off road and therefore I cannot understand why this transmission uis acting so flaky. I am also now getting some very wierd grinding noises when I back up. . . This is a new sound and will be having this looked at next. It seems as if this car is just deteriorating too quickly. After all I am not even at 100k yet. . . Any help or suggestions would be greatly greatly appreciated.
