3 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 10/12/2003

I have a 1996 Dodge Grand Caravan and it has had 4 transmission failures. Currently, the 5th transmission is in the vehicle. We have owned the caravan since 1/97 when it was purchased with about 50k miles on it. It was a lease turn in vehicle used by a salesman not hauling heavy loads but making tobbacco sales calls. I have spoken with other similar vehicle owners and there has been an issue with the transmission failing. I feel that daimler Chrysler should recall the transmission for replacement with a satisfactory one.

4 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 07/29/2003

While driving 65 mph the transmission failed without warning. The vehicle stopped in the fast lane on a major highway. The dealer was notified.

5 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 04/03/2003

1996 Dodge Grand Caravan se. Transmission completely failed (parked and running in driveway) with no advance warning. 81,000 miles, meticulously maintained. Diagnosed as a loose pin which wore a hole in the transmission case. A hole the size of a fist was blown through the top of the case when it finally failed. Also, this part is in such demand due to the number of failures with this model that a rebuilt transmission was almost $2000. Chrysler's chairman's office was contacted (case #11518366) and refused to provide any assistance with the cost of this repair.

6 Transmission Failure problem

The transmission failed, which caused the vehicle to stall, consumer stated the vehicle was on its third transmission.

7 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 01/10/2002

Transmission failed for the second time, manufacturer states out of warranty this time. Extremely rude customer service rep at Chrysler hotline stated car is old and no one in the chyrsler corporation can do anything about it. History of this transmission is poor and manufacturer defects are clearly the cause. Please help make Chrysler understand its responsibility for this problem.

8 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 04/08/2001

1996 g caravan, 63k miles, transmission failed, $1900 to replace, contacted Chrysler support - they were of no help in covering cost.

9 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 11/03/2000

Transmission failed while driving through busy city intersection. After having the vehicle towed to the dealer, I asked the service manager is this is a common problem in caravans. He said no, but he had seen it happen. Cost of repair: $1507. 63. When I questionned this, he said I should have purchased an extended warranty for the transmission.

10 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 04/04/1999

I was asked by other owners to post a complaint here in an effort to help others who are having the same problems with their transmissions failing. According to the information I have the transmission had been replaced two times prior to the date I purchased this vehicle. I have had the transmission rebuilt again. I have a web site and have had as many as 80 responses or similar complaints per week. It varies, but there has to be an excessive amount of transmission failures for this vehicle to get that kind of response. I think Chrysler has a transmission problem and refuses to make it right. Thanks,.

11 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 01/15/1999

Vehicle manufactured with defective automatic transmission. First rebuild occurred in 01/1999, when transmission failed after exitting off freeway. Loss use of 3rd and 4th gears. Mileage 35258. 2nd rebuild occured 12/2000 after loss of performance and detection of transmission oil leak. Mileage 60085. Transmission has inherent design flaw that I feel Chrysler needs to be held responsible for.

12 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 10/01/1996

Transmission microchip failed.

13 Transmission Failure problem

14 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 06/10/1996

The car currently has been in a sjop specializing in transmissions defying all attempts to restore the second transmission installed January, 1999. The mechanics are at a total loss to explain why a simple thing like a transmission failed prematurely in January, 1999 and has been effectively destroyed by something unidentifiable now. The second transmission failed on August 3, 2000 and the vehicle has been inoperable to this writing. The car would stop at high speed in highways trapping me and my children in the middle of high speed traffic, lietrally terrorizing me and my children. This would happen aften and the first sign of trouble occurred early whne the column-mounted shift would without warning pop out of gear, leaving the car either in neutral or with the engine turning off. All this was very troubling but Chrysler said it was "normal. " that summarizes my experience with this totally dangerously unreliable vehicle. The only thing that hasn't failed has been the exhaust system. I was told that I or any passengers or other drivers (my older children drive) could have died if the gas ignited when I found the discharge of gas as indicated by the rapidly dropping gas gauge into the engine creating an incredibly noxious odor of gasoline in the passenger compartment alerting me to the potential hazard. Chrysler subsequently issued two recalls on this failed fuel system. I have just received another- this at four years old. Clearly Chrysler knows a lot more about this dangerous, deadly vehicle than it is admitting through these recalls and I am ripping mad. Thanks for your attention. ( dot number: ).

15 Transmission Failure problem

Transmission failed. Nlm.

16 Transmission Failure problem

While driving on freeway at 65 mph transmission completely locked up. Took to vehicle Chrysler. Transmission has failed several times before. Please provide any further information.

17 Transmission Failure problem

The transmission has failed 5 times and has been replaced. In one instance, the car just stopped as I was making a turn. No one has been injured; however, the car is potentially dangerous and certainly unreliable as we have had it into the repair shop 5 times for the same problem in 4 years.

18 Transmission Failure problem

The transmission failed prematurely.

19 Transmission Failure problem

If the vehicle was in overdrive and the gas pedal was depressed from the idle position, the vehicle jerked forward/stalled out. This was caused by automatic transmission failure. At 60,000 mile the transmission failed and Chrysler would not honor any warranty.
