1 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2018 Dodge Grand Caravan

Failure Date: 01/02/2020

I was in allentown and my brake pedal drifted halfway to the floor while at the stoplight. I was at pep boys and they bleed the brakes. That seemed to do the trick. Here we are two weeks later and the brake pedal is getting spongy and drifting again. Therefore no fluid leaks any place. There have been similar complaints on online boards. I paid cash for this van July 1 2019 . I should not have this problem. This is a manufacturer defect and is a safety hazered for myself a d my passengers. Not to mention other persons on the road or crosswalks.

2 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2012 Dodge Grand Caravan

Failure Date: 06/30/2016

On June 30th, 2016 my family and I were driving northbound on I-91 in massachusetts between exits 14 and 15. The rear brakes began to make a noise while driving at speed (~65 mph) and not depressing the brake pedal. Minutes later a thump was heard similar to when an object or roadkill is run over. When the brake pedal was depressed, it went to the floor. I could see smoke coming from the rear passenger wheel. We later found out that one brake pad had broken through/been thrown from the rear passenger wheel, and brake fluid was pouring out from that brake assembly. We exited the highway at exit 15 and drove small low-traffic roads home. Dodge was contacted but refused to assist in towing the vehicle to a dealer for assessment. We replaced the brakes, calipers, and rotors in our driveway. Attached photos show the brake assembly before it was removed from the vehicle for replacement. The car was three years and 10 months old, with ~48,660 miles, and on its second pair of rear brake pads. This is at least the 21st complaint on NHTSA about the same component (rear brake pads on 2012 Grand Caravan wearing too quickly). Dodge refused assistance both at the time of the incident and after I followed up with our dealer, with no reason given for the refusal. (case #29615622) given the many official and hundreds of unofficial complaints about the 2012 Dodge Grand Caravan rear brakes, I hope the NHTSA will investigate further and pressure Dodge to repair or replace this part. Thank you.

4 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 1999 Dodge Grand Caravan

Failure Date: 06/20/2012

I was coming around a turn and saw a car making a left turn in front of me. I tried to slow down by braking and the van appeared to accelerate. I barely avoided running into the turning car by swerving around it. I then found that only my emergency brake was working. I got home and my neighbor helped locate the problem. The brake fluid had leaked out through the brake line. There are 6 connections to the cab. Two are for lines running to the rear of the van. They have 6 inch sections of flex tubing between the solid tubing. The leak is at the rearward connections between the solid and flex tubing. Both rearward connections have the corroded solid metal for the first few inches after the flex tubing. I noted that there are a number of complaints about brake failure due to corrosion of brake lines on the 1999 Dodge Grand Caravan and caravan on the internet.

5 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 1999 Dodge Grand Caravan

Failure Date: 08/24/2011

1999 awd abs Grand Caravan, personal use only , no towing, mild NJ winter conditions. Car parked for three days after extended trip (2,880 miles over 3weeks)at highway speeds with no problems. On second leg of k-turn while attempting to reposition car in driveway (speed less than 5miles/ hr) brake pedal suddenly deprressed all the way to the floor. Inspecting below the van showed brake fluid leak from a ruptured rear brake line close to braided flex line close to abs module. All steel lines found to be extensively corroded /rusted up to and involving fixtures at attachment to inner brake hoses at the rear, up to the master cylinder and the front wheel lines at the attachment to front hoses. Dodge dealership (autoland) totally hands-off in trying to address this glaring safety issue - "no recalls, no mechanisms to report this issue to Chrysler", more infuriating is that no replacement parts are available for these defective parts, they have all been discontinued. . . . Right at the time that most of these cars will be needing the braking plumbing changed!!! meanwhile there all these ticking time bombs of caravans out there with tenuous braking ability once these defective lines rupture. Please recall these before someone dies, before somebody's family cries!!! I shudder to think this could have occurred during my long road trip.

7 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan

Failure Date: 10/23/2010

2008 Dodge Grand Caravan 32k miles front brakes were squeaking so we took it to local Dodge dealer. Said the front rotors and pads needed to be replaced. This car is new and the first brake job needs rotors? we paid for it and later Dodge sent out a reimbursement letter in the summer to pay half of the costs. I wonder if they put the same junk rotors back on? now, 6k miles later the front right brake squeals like the pad is low but the dealer said it is ok and that is "normal". It is not normal to hear a grinding pad on rotor sound when the pad is good! the only thing he said they could do would be to resurface the rotor and put stop squeal on the pad. It would cost around 120. 00 bucks. Poor parts are obviously on this car. . . I will not buy another Dodge or suggest anyone do so. Other problems with this new car so far are: 1. When first bought, trans fluid leak, warranty fixed that. 2. Rotors and pads on front (as described above), reimbursed for half 3. Now at 38k miles, the front left wheel bearing is bad, have to replace, 220. 00 dollars, I am talking to Chrysler to see if they will pay for or not. Two dealers and two repair shops cannot get this part for a week to a month, they are on backorder.

8 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2001 Dodge Grand Caravan

Failure Date: 08/24/2010

Brake line burst. After just getting off the highway, stopping at stop sign and felt something change. Pulled into a parking lot, had to press pedal all the way down to stop. Brake fluid pouring out of rear left side. Had to have it towed. Scary to think if it had gone on highway, esp. Since I had my 4 yr. Old with me. Replaced w/ dealer part. Mechanic stated that the 3 other sections have a coating to prevent corrosion but the 4th doesn't, that's how it comes. So this new part is subject to fail again? this is a serious safety issue. How common is this repair? is there a design flaw that could be remedied before someone dies?.

10 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2003 Dodge Grand Caravan

Failure Date: 11/07/2008

I've had three brake line failures in 2 years (the first incident was on 3/31/2006; this was the brake line that was originally on the vehicle when I purchased the car, the second was on 11/22/2006; this was a replacement part which I ordered from the dealership). The brake line assembly on the left rear wheel breaks and leaks fluid which causes the brakes to fail when pressure is applied to the brake pedal. I have had the brake assembly replaced with a new one at each occurrence. Now, I have had another brake assembly failure. It will take 5 business days for the new one to arrive. I will keep the old one when the car is repaired.

11 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 1997 Dodge Grand Caravan

Failure Date: 07/08/2008

The contact owns a 1997 Dodge Grand Caravan. While backing out of the garage, the contact noticed a puddle of fluid on the ground. He exited the vehicle, inspected the fluid, and discovered the puddle was brake fluid. He pulled the vehicle back into the garage and crawled underneath to discover that the rear brake line was corroded. The vehicle has not been repaired. The failure and current mileages were 168,680.

12 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2002 Dodge Grand Caravan

Failure Date: 06/10/2004

My vehicle has ongoing problems with abnormal brake wear. At 17000 miles the brakes hung up. The front left rotor was completely worn away. New pads and rotors. Right front caliper not functioning properly and was replaced. Prior to this I had the oil changed and brakes checked 1500 miles earlier--I had noticed that the brake pedal travel was varying and it was taking longer to stop the car. Mechanic had stated that left front had a little over half of brake surface left. Second brake failure at 34500 miles. Again, left front hung up. Took the car to arrigo Dodge and was told I was lying about first incident even though I had receipts. Service rep told me both brakes completely worn away, even though again the problem presented with the left front brake hanging up. Was told it was my fault brakes were wearing prematurely. Car pulled to right after brake replacement when I called dealer again was told it was my fault dealer refused to do anything about it. Brakes began squealing - most noticeably left front again - within 500 miles of replacement. Left front brake sticks when starting off, brakes squeal, brake fluid seen leaking from right front, brake pedal already has a lot of play in it, takes an excessive amount of distance to stop even with strong force applied to brakes. I have narrowly missed having several accidents because of this. Called dealer, again told it was my fault -- driver habits they call it. In the 25 years I have owned and driven vehicles, I have never had to replace brakes before 38000 miles or had any problems remotely similar to this. P. 245 of owners manual states "if either of the two hydraulic systems lose normal capability . . . There will be some loss of overall braking effectiveness. This may be evident by increased pedal travel during application, greater pedal force required to slow or stop. . . " what will it take for this problem to be correctly addressed -- people dying because of this brake failure?.
