Serpentine belt comes off when it gets wet such as driving through puddles or water from roadway when raining. Has happened several times over past few months. Replaced belt but still comes off. This results in loss of power steering making it very difficult to safely pull off road to safe location.
The serpentine belt fell of during wet road conditions. I drive a 3. 3l Dodge Grand Caravan. I had no idea how popular this problem is. Chrysler could fix it with a tensioner with a sidewall or a ribbed tensioner.

While traveling this past winter a snow plow ran me into a pile of snow in the middle of the road. Immediately after this happened the serpentine belt slipped off. After having this problem fixed the serpentine belt then slipped off several more times before I found a part called a pulley bracket to put on because there is no cover on the serpentine belt to prevent this problem.
The contact owns a 1998 Dodge caravan. The contact stated that while driving 30 mph in the snow, the serpentine belt came off and caused a sudden loss of power. The serpentine belt had been replaced six times. The failure mileage was 97,000.
The serpentine belt came off several times in the rain , on our 1999 Dodge Grand Caravan, resulting in loss of power steering. I had gone through a puddle and as I turned a corner I lost power steering. I made it onto the side grass as I was unable to complete the turn. I was only a couple feet away from hitting a brick building. This was a very unsettling experience. I should not have to be terrified to drive in the rain.
The contact owns a 1996 Dodge Grand Caravan. The contact stated that the serpentine belt separated from the engine when the vehicle was driven in the rain. The serpentine belt was replaced twice, but the failure was not remedied. The manufacturer was notified. The failure mileage was 262,747.

When driving in wet conditions, particularly splashing through water, the vehicle serpentine belt begins to chatter and the vehicle experiences a brief reduction/loss of power. This becomes particularly troublesome when pulling out into traffic. The dealerships have stated that there is no mechanical defect with the vehicle that they can find. This happens on repeated occasions and can be reproduced even today. It has been occurring for some time now.

I own a 1998 Dodge Grand Caravan the serpentine belt came off during my evacuation from hurricane gustav it happen in the middle of a bridge at night is the 6th time that this occur I just had this replace how come there has not been a recall to solve this before someone die.
When ever it rains or snows and a lil bit of moisture gets up in the engine the serpentine belt comes off and I lose everything, power steering, fan, you name it its gone, and I have almost wrecked 5 out of 8 times this has happened. . 2 times I found myself having going in to a field to stop due to steering was gone, and possible burn/ fire could have resulted from engine over heating and liquids boiling/ and steam rising. Leading to be a very dangerous problem to anyone near the vehicle, I have 3 children and they were with me 3 of the 8 times the belt came off. I searched online and apparently im not the only one having this problem. . There is alot more people out there with this complaint. I did however replace the belt once again, along with pulley/ tensioner its getting to be quite expensive for me as a single mom.
1- noise serpentine belt. 2- sudden temporary loss of power steering while driving in rain. Occurs everytime it rains. Resulting in temporary extremely dangerous situation as I am unable to steer even though I am a strong 350lbs. 3- have changed serpentine belt several times but problem persists.
Belt falling off 1998 Dodge Grand Caravan for the 5th time in 1 1/2 years. Resulting in mechanic charges and loss of vehicle. We have replaced tensioner on 2 occasions, belts on 5 occasions to no avail. The problem continues. Dodge/Chrysler should do something about this problem. Fortunately, no one was hurt (this time). The added expense is killing us!.
The serpentine belt chronically has fallen off and been replaced on the car. It has fallen off twice in the first year that we purchased the car new. When it falls off, there is no power steering. Fortunately up to this time my wife was not driving highway speeds. It is a fatality waiting to happen with this design.
Serpentine belt keeps falling off whenever the vehicle goes through a puddle, rendering the power steering useless, engine overheats, alternator stops. 2000 Dodge Grand Caravan 3. 3l with ac, 132,000 mi, serpentine belt, tensioner, and water pump replaced; the belt slipped off once per week for three weeks, each time during a heavy rain 3/4/2008, 3/27/2008, 2/28/2008.
Drive belt jumping off while driving through a puddle. Loss of power steering and over heating of engine.
Serpentine belt keeps sliding off during slight moisture, whether raining, drizzling or splashing up water. Steering and brake failure multiple times. Had to use Ford wheel that has a "lip" on it to keep belt from slipping any more.
The contact owns a 1998 Dodge Grand Caravan. The contact stated that the serpentine belt continuously detaches in wet weather conditions. The belt detaches while driving at various speeds and causes the vehicle to shut off. The vehicle has not been taken to a dealer for repair. The powertrain was unknown. The current mileage was 158,000 and failure mileage was 156,000.
Driving home in ice storm our 1999 Dodge caravan lost power steering, lights dimmed, overheated. Apparently this is a recurring problem with the caravans and the serpentine belt and tensioner.
Serpentine belt flies off with a minimal amount of moisture. Both wife and I have driven our 1998 Dodge Grand Caravan in wet weather and the serpentine belt has come off numerous times. The vehicle doesn't even need to hit a puddle, the slightest amount of water splashing from another car will cause it to come off. Belt falling off causes power steering, cooling, and charging to fail resulting in serious safety hazard as car is impossible to control.
The contact owns a 2000 Dodge Grand Caravan. While driving 25 mph in the rain or through a puddle, the serpentine belt detaches. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and they replaced the serpentine belt twice; however, they were unable to determine why the failure occurs only when it rains. The manufacturer advised the contact to call NHTSA. The current mileage was 90,625 and failure mileage was 85,000. Updated 03/11/08.
The contact owns a 1999 Dodge Grand Caravan. While driving 30 mph in the rain, the serpentine belt detaches. The mechanic replaced the belt eight times; however, the failure recurred on January 25, 2008. The mechanic advised that the dealer should perform a diagnostic. The dealer replaced the pulley bracket, the bolts, and the serpentine belt according to the manufacturer's technical service bulletin. The failure recurred on January 27, 2008. The current mileage is 160,669 and failure mileage was 605. Updated 02/14/08. Updated.
This has happened 2 times in the last year. Hit a small puddle of water while making a right hand turn. Water sprayed up on the serpentine belt which threw the belt off of the idler pulley and tensioner pulley. Both times we were making a right hand turn. . . Which made it very dangerous because we loss the power steering. The first time was with my wife driving. . . Which would be very hard to control for a lady. . . The second time I was driving, which was better. . . But still very dangerous. I am planning on purchasing the goodyear replacement kit that has been mentioned on several websites and this website. Daimlerchrysler should be recalling all these vans and replacing all the pulleys with these safer kits.
I have a 1997 Dodge Grand Caravan last year on December 2007 my serpentine belt came off while I was making a right on one street under the rain, I almost lost control off my car but I was fortunate that no cars were around. It was hard for me to drive my car but I called the mechanic and he told me not worry that I would be able to get safe to the shop. That incident broke my windshield hose water, my air conditioner and my steering wheel hose and heat it up the car so I had to stop several times before I got to the mechanic shop. I was so afraid but I got safe. Then it happen again a week later, I was so angry with the mechanic because I thought that he didn't do nothing to my car and that he was taking my money only, since I was around the corner I was able to go back to him. Within the las 7 months, my serpentine belt came off around 5 times and every time that it came off it broke something, so I had to pay the mechanic more money. I would really like for someone to try to contact Chrysler and try to see what they can do, unless they are expenting for someone to get kill because they can't maneuver the wheel. Thanks for your time
monica huaman.

The contact owns a 2000 Dodge Grand Caravan. While driving 70 mph, the contact experienced a loss of steering and the instrument panel lights illuminated. He looked under the hood and discovered that the serpentine belt was detached. The contact re-attached the serpentine belt. The dealer was notified. The current mileage was 96,000 and failure mileage was 95,000.
The serpentine belt has come off three times to date. Once in 3 inches of snow, once on a sunny day and once when on slick roads but no puddles. Almost caused accidents twice with three children in the car! the belt has been replaced as has the tensioner and this has not solved the problem.
While driving in heavy rain my serpentine belt came off the pulleys and resulted in a dangerous situation when I lost my steering while driving in traffic. I understand that this is a common and dangerous problem on the earlier (1997 through the early 2000s models) Dodge caravan 3. 0, 3. 3, and 3. 8 engines. There are many postings on the internet with people having the same thing happening during rain storms. I am the original owner of this 1998 Dodge caravan. The van only has 61,686 miles on it. At 43,000 miles I had to replace the belt, tensioner, and pulley idler. I also have heard that Dodge did a recall on this problem in at least one other country. Chrysler should be mandated to offer a fix for this here in the USA. I temporarily fixed my problem by putting the old serpentine belt back on the pulleys. This is not an easy task and trying to do it along the road is hazardous. But for most people this would be impossible to do.
I filed a complaint on 28 Aug 2007 regarding my vehicle and the serpentine belt issue. I had to have my vehicle towed and it is going to cost approx. 500. 00 to repair the vehicle for the 7th time. I have found the answer to the problem that 30+ folks on this site alone are having. #1 the belt is smooth on one side and grooved on the other side so when oil, rain etc. Touches the belt, it slips off. What I found it that there is a drain hose that sits on the left side of the belt when the water from rain comes through the drain from the windshield into this hose, and drips right on top of the belt causing it to be faulty. The hose has to be directed into a different place . I also found that g. Auto makes a kit that comes with the belt, tensioner and all accessories to fix the problem permanantly. The difference is that the hose and the tensioner is grooved to provide no slippage. I have spoken to 2 auto dealers that have advised me that they have had numerous problems with this issue including a shop in tennessee that said that they have worked on 15 2000 Dodge Grand Caravans in the last 2 months with an average of 4-8 belts being lost and having to be replaced for each van from 2000. There is nowhere to complain, so you would not be aware of the severity of this issue with out checking inventories. I have been told by Dodge dealers that they know about the kits and the problem and I have contacted Dodge corporation but as you and I know, a recall will cost them millions of dollars. What about the lives that may have or might be lost when you are driving and the steering goes out. This should be taken seriously. The issue is that folks bought these cars in good faith and they have paid hundreds and maybe thousand out of their own pockets that they should never have had to if this problem was taken care of in the beginning. The consumer provided emails corresponding with the manufacturer. Updated 09/23/07.
We purchased new a 2000 Dodge Grand Caravan. Within 2 years while I was driving not knowing what was going on the steering on the car went out with no warning and I almost hit a tree. I found that it was the serpentine belt. From that point on I have almost had 2 additional accidents because the belt either was chewed up or came off. My husband felt the experience yesterday when the steering went out. This will be the 6th belt problem that we have had with this vehicle. I have contacted Dodge but to no avail. What happens when the belt goes and you are traveling 60-70mph and you have no control of this car. Is there anything that we can do? I have not complained because Dodge says that there is nothing they can do. They have admitted ti me that there are problems with the serpentine belts. I did not even know you existed otherwise you would have heard from me long ago and we may have saved a lot of money time and luckily no lives have been lost to this point. Thank you.
My 2000 Grand Caravan (87000), has the dash board crack on the drivers side, from the windshield to the speaker grille, (and traveling). This is a common problem with Chrysler vehicles due to news reports recently. Chrysler should address this problem before people get hurt ect. . I have replaced the evaporater, a/c compressor, & belt $2300. 00. The transmission is shifting badly and today check engine light came on. This is my 7th Chrysler vehicle in the past 30 years, and will be the last if Chrysler doesn't step up, on this dash problem this time.
This is the fourth time in the last several months that my serpentine belt fell off while turning a corner. I have a 97 Dodge Grand Caravan sport se (3. 3). The first two times it was raining and the second two times were in good weather. Each time it was quite a jerk when the power steering went out on the turn. What if this had happened on the highway when I wouldn't have been able to control the vehicle??? obviously, this is quite a hassle having to get the car towed each time and having the mechanic put the belt back on and look for the problem, and not being able to trust my vehicle anymore. My mechanic replaced the tensioner, belt, and pulleys with the gates mv conversion kit. He was aware of this being a common problem. I also read online about all the other people with the same problem and how this seemed to be the only fix that worked. The Dodge dealership here said they were not aware of this problem! this is a very dangerous problem and should be corrected by Chrysler. Do people have to die before Chrysler will take responsibility for this design flaw and provide this fix for everyone?.
2000 Dodge Grand Caravan serpentine belt keeps squealing, breaking, slipping off, and shredding. For over a year now we have problems with this belt that have baffled the mechanics. Fortunately, no one has been injured, but we have been stranded twice requiring a tow, and h had the van in the shop at least 6 times over this problem which is still unresolved. After a quick search, it seems to be a huge problem that many owners are experiencing. Many 'fixes' are out there, but perhaps the best, most reliable is to have the mechanic install an 'after market' kit with special pulleys and belt for around $200. I will probably have this done as we can't keep rolling the dice with the family vehicle.
Serpentine belt came off four times while driving in the rain. After the fourth time the garage ordered a conversion kit from the gates corporation that replaced the idler plus the tensioner. The kit also included a new double sided ribbed belt. Their part number is 38,342 k. It can also be ordered through car quest auto parts stores. Their part number is the same. I have not had a problem since.
Continual serpentine belt issues with Dodge Grand Caravan. We purchased this vehicle new in 1999, it has less than 100,000 miles and has required replacement of the serpentine belt at least 4 times. Additionally, the belt has come off on 2 occasions when vehicle was driven through a puddle. This seems extremely excessive.
My Dodge 2000 Grand Caravan serpentine belt can come off the drive when the vehicle is driven into a deep puddle of water or through a snow bank. And when the belt comes off, I lost the control to the vehicle because the belt drives the power steering pump. It is the serious safety issue obviously. . Read more...
