5 Engine Clicking And Tapping Noises problem of the 2012 Dodge Grand Caravan

Failure Date: 11/07/2018

We own a Dodge caravan that has some major engine problems that seem to be common for the 2012-2013 v6 penstar engine. The problem is in the engine head and valves. Our van has collapsed cam lobes due to failing rocker arms. The symptom that revealed this problem was a misfire in the left cylinder head. The symptoms are very similar to the problems noted in TSB no. 09-002-14b including a misfire in the left cylinder head and a loud ticking noise coming from this area. Chrysler has an extended warranty known as x56 that addresses the problem noted in TSB no. 09-002-14b. Unfortunately, their warranty only covers the head replacement (which includes the valves and cams) if the head is cracked. While investigating multiple Dodge/Chrysler forums I have noted a large number of Dodge owners experiencing the same problem that we have. In fact, I have learned that the problem is so pervasive that Chrysler has an internal star case bulletin, s1309000016 related to the rocker arms and cam lobe problems. The engine check light came on while we were driving.

6 Engine Clicking And Tapping Noises problem of the 2014 Dodge Grand Caravan

Failure Date: 04/01/2018

We have had this vehicle for 2 years. It had a ticking sound from the day we bought it. The dealer said it was our cams and rockers which they repaired. Shortly after we started getting a p0304 code. . . Told not to worry about it. Code went away then we get the code agin so we replace all 6 spark plugs with mopar plugs and mopar coils. . Had to replace the starter as well. Code came back and has a rough idle. . . Engine runs great but idle is bad. Low compression on 4th cylinder and now looking at a cracked head. Dodge has a problem with these pentastar engines. . . A lot more than 7500. A recall needs to happen with these engines. I have a 2003 pontiac montana that runs great and I have not anywhere near the problems. Dodge needs to repair my van!!!!.

12 Engine Clicking And Tapping Noises problem of the 2011 Dodge Grand Caravan

Failure Date: 09/23/2016

My 2011 caravan has 68k miles on it. For the past few months, it will intermittently have problems starting. Everything seems fine until you turn it to crank and then it just makes a click noise. It will do this anywhere from 2 to 20 times until it finally cranks. It will be fine for days and then suddenly. . . No start. I've left it at my mechanic for one week last month and one week this month. They replaced the battery, but no avail. They have seen it in action (actually came to me because they are totally stumped too), but cannot replicate it. So I'm out $800 in car rental fees and no one can figure out why the thing is acting like it is. I'm worried I'm going to be stranded with a hand full of kids and a car that won't start. I don't like feeling like I can't trust my car. Dodge has been unhelpful as well, although I'm giving the dealership a shot at this problem again and taking it there. Another week of rental car fees - yay! from reading online and a quick youtube search, it appears I'm not alone with this problem. I just want it fixed, whatever the problem is.

14 Engine Clicking And Tapping Noises problem of the 2013 Dodge Grand Caravan

Failure Date: 03/16/2016

Vehicle has misfire and ticking sound from engine with check engine light on and flashing. Also when driving vehicle wants to stall when idling . . Took to dealer and told me head cylinder need replaced but not covered by extended warranty Chrysler issued for exact same reason for 2011-2013 models. This is not fair that not all 2013 Grand Caravans are covered. They should all be covered by same warranty.

Bolts were replaced and tire alignment was adjusted as it had also changed. Chrysler, as a good will gesture, refunded the cost of the repair, wheel alignment and partial cost of the 4 tires worn on the outside edge side edge.

18 Engine Clicking And Tapping Noises problem of the 2005 Dodge Grand Caravan

Failure Date: 04/24/2005

My 2005 Dodge caravan is 9 months old and one day I'm driving and my engine starts making a tapping noiseand the oil light comes on. The next day (Monday) I take it to stafford Dodge dealer (robert stocking). They tell me I have less than 1 qt of oil in my car so I need to have my engine block replaced. I informed the dealership that I had my oil changed 1 month ago by jiffy lube, and also had checked my oil 2 weeks prior to the incedent and my oil was at the max line. The dealership contacted daimler Chrysler (steve shoof) and informed them on what had happened and chyrsler denied the claim, therefore, I was stuck paying $5,070 plus $500 for a rental car for two weeks while my car was being repaired. Actually I did find out when I went to pay for my car a note was on one of the mechanics receipts saying that the car had the wrong dipstick installed in my car; which probably lead to the oil aeration. I went back to look at my jiffy lube receipts and one of the notes in 10 Nov 04 stated that the oil level was high when they tried to change my oil for the first time and thought possibly that I may have the wrong dipstick. The personnel at jiffy lube never told me directly that I may have had the wrong dipstick they only noted it on the receipt. If I had been told I would have went directly to the Dodge dealer. I'm assuming with all the trouble jiffy lube had trying to read my dipstick when in all actuality the dipstick was 6 inches too long (per the Dodge maintenance manager) therefore it lead to oil aeration and loss of oil pressure. The maintenace manager(john verne) at the dealership gave me the dipstick that was removed from my car. Maybe you can assist me in getting this matter resolved. I have 4 children to support and I had to take the $5,070 out of my checking account so I could have a car to drive to get to work.

19 Engine Clicking And Tapping Noises problem of the 1998 Dodge Grand Caravan

Failure Date: 07/04/2002

Starting at about 15,000 miles, this car produced clicking noise from the head/valve train. Upon initial inspection, a dealer (not the one where it was bought) told me there was nothing wrong, at 35k, during a highway trip, the noise became pronounced. Soon thereafter, I took the car to my local garage and explained the noise and that I noticed the head was running dry without the type of oil splash I have seen in all other cars I have owned. He said that it seems that chysler Mini-vans have a lot of problems with the valves and that it was, in his opinion, an oil delivery problem. He said that he had 2 in during the prior few weeks for the same type of problem. He suggested that I should take it to the dealer as this was a serious problem, one that shouldn't exist in a car with 35k miles. When I took the car into the dealer, to my shock, I was told that they would have to do major repairs due to "camshaft failure". Although I asked for more detail on the cause of the failure many times, both in writing and on the phone, "camshaft failure" is all they would say about the problem. Fortunately for me, they agreed to provide a full "long block" engine replacement (under "courtesy" warranty with $300 "deductible. ") because of what my non-dealer mechanic said (that this is a common problem in Chrysler Mini-vans of my car's vintage and because he opined that there may be a systemic problem with oil delivery, plus the fact that when I checked this site, I found that other people had reported like sounding problems, I feel I should report this. Fyi, this car always seemed to run dry (no oil splash when engine run with filler cap off). I think NHTSA might wish to consider investigating to see if this is a common defect due to a manufacturing error. Thanks for the help keep up the good work!.
