Failure Date: 08/19/2019

Tl- the contact owns a 2012 Dodge Grand Caravan. The contact stated that while traveling at 40 mph, the engine ceased to operate without warning. The contact was able to coast the vehicle into a parking lot but was unable to restart the vehicle. The contact had the vehicle towed to his home; the contact called a mechanic to his home and had his starter replaced. Despite the repair, the engine seized again without warning. The contact took the vehicle to an independent mechanic who diagnosed the vehicle with engine failure. The vehicle had not been taken to a dealer. The manufacturer had been notified of the failure and informed him that his vehicle was not under recall. The contact was then referred to NHTSA for assistance. The vehicle had not been repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 107,000. Jo.

2 Engine Failure problem of the 2014 Dodge Grand Caravan

Failure Date: 05/04/2019

My wife was driving our 2014 Dodge Grand Caravan home from the store in may 2019 when the engine stalled and shut off in an intersection. Thankfully someone stopped to help push the van out of the intersection. We were able to get the van towed to our local dealer/service. Diagnostics indicated an engine misfire and service technician found low compression in cylinder #3. Further troubleshooting determined the problem was a valve failure and the dealer repairs cost us over $2,700. Unfortunately, our 5yr/50,000mi limited powertrain warranty expired in April. . . Eight days before the engine failure! we previously enjoyed owning a Chrysler town & country and have been happy with the performance and utility of the Grand Caravan, but the engine failure seems to be the same issue as other owners have experienced on previous model years. Apparently the powertrain warranty was extended for 2011-2013 model years, but not 2014. This is an issue that needs to be resolved by fca us before it becomes a safety issue.

3 Engine Failure problem of the 2012 Dodge Grand Caravan

Failure Date: 02/18/2019

Van shuts off while driving - 3x in a fifteen minute span. Loss of steering and ability to control the car. Only 70k miles - extremely dangerous. Must put the car in park to turn it back on. Local mechanic cannot diagnose the problem because the diagnostic computer is not sent any kind of signal. Battery has been tested 3x and found to be working normally. Mechanic drove the car approximately 25 miles over 3 separate periods to repeat the engine failure and could not. Says he cannot 'fix' a problem if it cannot be detected.

4 Engine Failure problem of the 2014 Dodge Grand Caravan

Failure Date: 12/02/2018

Related to service bulletin sb-10058301-5939, Dodge has a known engine defect that results in failure of the engine oil cooler that can cause sudden and major oil loss and potential catastrophic engine failure. This failed on my vehicle suddenly causing a major loss of oil, large oil spill. It appears that this is a very common failure, I don't understand why thius isnt being recalled.

6 Engine Failure problem of the 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan

Failure Date: 03/19/2016

The van engine shuts down while in drive. This has happened 4 times with in a week. It has shut down completely at an intersection. Even the hazards would not come on to show other drivers that I was broke down. I received a notice last year about a recall for the ignition module and I was put an a long wait list to have it fixed. On January 3, 2016 I had the recall taken care of at sherwood service in salisbury, MD. I have never had the engine failure happen before having the recall fixed, and now, it is happening. When the engine shut down the last time, my husband who was driving had to call the police to direct traffic around the van until the tow truck got there so he would not be hit! it blocked an intersection for 30 minutes until the van was towed away, when the van got home on the tow truck, it started up with no problem. Every time this has happened, the van has been in gear and driving when it completely shuts down and it has either gone over a small bump or been turning. I would also like to add that I had an appointment with sherwood Chrysler in salisbury, MD today(3/22/21) and they said that they could not find anything wrong with my van and tried send my husband home in the van without fixing the problem! he insisted that they drive it (which they would not do today) to see if it happened again. They still have my van.

8 Engine Failure problem of the 2010 Dodge Grand Caravan

Failure Date: 02/07/2011

I have had problems with my 2010 doge Grand Caravan since we bought it. But on 2/7/11 I thought we were going to die due to the car shutting down at 60 miles per hour. We were driving 60 mph in the fast lane of traffic when the engine shut off. I lost my power steering and power brakes and did my best to pull off to safety. I called the dealership and a service man asked me to check to see if I had ran out of gas. I still had about 10 gallons in my tank. The van did turn back on so he had me drive about a mile or so to his garage. He put the car on a computer to check the codes. He claims there was no codes indicating this engine failure. No surprise because this dealership, the same one I bought the van tells me there is nothing wrong each time something like this happens. I checked the internet and there are several other complaints showing engine failure on this make and model at 60 miles per hour. Some of the complaints involved children sitting in the back seat when the van's engine died at 60 mph. I reported this to chysler and have a case number 20392664. I was told to contact another dealership which I called today. They told me the service manager was not in and someone would call me back. No one has called me back so I am writing this complaint in hopes that I will get help with this urgent matter.

9 Engine Failure problem of the 1999 Dodge Grand Caravan

Failure Date: 05/01/2006

Despite regular (3,000-mile or less) oil changes at dealer or certified independent repair shop, 1999 Dodge Grand Caravan with 3. 3 liter engine developed severe oil sludge problems. First indication of problem was a soft clicking engine noise. Certified independent mechanic diagnosed problem as oil sludge, showed us caked engine components. Replaced rockers arms and some valves and bearings and flushed engine. Repairs not successful, noise continued. Returned to mechanic who kept the van for several days and did several more engine flushes and oil changes. This did not solve problem and mechanic warned me that driving would soon lead to massive engine failure. The only solution was an expensive overhaul ($7,000-$8,000) or a new/rebuilt engine ($5,000-$6,000) that might still have these problems. After internet research, I realized this was Chrysler problem with engine. Now my van is an expensive yard ornament--at least until I drive it one last time to trade it in. I do not consider it safe to drive as massive failure could lead to fire or accident.

10 Engine Failure problem of the 1998 Dodge Grand Caravan

Failure Date: 03/07/2004

Engine failure of second engine in vehicle within 55,000 miles. I previously reported the replacement of engine in my Dodge Grand Caravan at 37,000 miles due to a lifter failure occasioned by what was described by the regional service manager as "soft metal. " a long block replacement was installed and now at 55000 miles I am told that the engine has a "bad lift" and needs replacement. Thus, I now have had two engines in the same car each of which has failed in about the same way. I have a warranty claim pending but feel strongly that this is a systemic problem that needs to be investigated. I assure you that the car was well cared for and that all required service was met or exceeded. I have had many cars not one of which had engine failure even after a hundred and twenty thousand miles and considerably less meticulous care.

11 Engine Failure problem of the 1998 Dodge Grand Caravan

Failure Date: 12/14/2003

I have a 1998 Dodge Grand Caravan se that hade engine failure. The van has been running good and has been well taken care of. My van at that time hade 126,000 miles on it, so it is pass warranty period. I still believe that this engine shouldn,t have failed at 126,000 miles. This is my second Mini-van, and up until this point have been satisfied with them. I think chysler should take responsibility for this failure. My voyager has 208,000 miles on the engine and still running. Something went wrong with this 3. 3 l v6 engine. I am not satisfied with the failure or with me having to spend $2,500. 00 to repair it. This shouldn,t have happen.
