Driving along and suddenly van didn’t go into gear…. Towed and was confirmed there is a transmission issue…. When checked for recalls about this issue, I was told my vehicle id number doesn’t match the recall however no one can tell me why if there was a recall on this particular make and model and year but my VIN is not included. I have been unsuccessful in any resolve or answers since March of this year ! very disappointed and unsatisfied with the way I have not been able to get any help. I am [xxx] with very limited knowledge of the mechanical portion of this process. I would truly appreciate any further assistance you can offer. Thank you kindly, [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).
Transmission just suddenly altered. In drive it would only go a couple miles an hour. In reverse it would shake the whole van. Smelled like something was burning. No warning signs.

My report is to hopefully get a recall started on the transmission of my vehicle. I do not yet have 100,000 miles on my vehicle and need a new transmission. I realize now every time that it accelerated strangely or delayed in acceleration that my transmission was defective all along since I purchased the vehicle. I assumed it was me getting used to the vehicle but I now realize since I had my vehicle inspected by 3 different mechanics, 2 of them specialized in transmissions, that it is defective. The two specialists mechanics told me that this is a known problem for this type of vehicle and I beg of you to investigate this matter immediately. Further, the design of my vehicle’s transmission is completely enclosed, which doesn’t allow it to be repaired without removal and rebuilding. I still owe quite a bit of money on this vehicle, and I cannot even drive it more than a few blocks. Two days ago, while waiting for the drawbridge by my home to go down, I put the vehicle in park. When it was time to go, my vehicle would not go out of park for about 30 seconds and then would not move once in drive for another 30 seconds. My engine light came on a while ago, which is what led me to have it checked out. It has always gotten very bad gas mileage since I bought it used. When I bought the vehicle, it was during covid when there was a chip shortage, so there were no affordable new cars on car lots. There should be some recourse for this problem.

I noticed some shifting issues, and some power loss along with an oil leak and the vehicle is not getting enough lubrication. The vehicle is only at 114010 miles and according to the dealership a new engine is needed. A new engine oil cooler was replaced however not the hoses and the problem still exists.

The vehicle lost power in all gears while driving on highway, I was in the middle of large semi trucks speeding around me and nearly hit me. The vehicle transmission acted up at 115,000 miles. It has clean transmission fluid and it is full. I believe it should be covered under the transmission recall for this year range but it does not have any recalls.
My van has only 88,509 miles. In the middle of a snowstorm, when I was 200 miles from home, it died. It had weird noises during the day, but the engine light had not come on at all. As I was trying to get to my mother's house in blinding snow, it simply stopped on a hill on a dark road. I was terrified. I had to rent a car to get back to NJ (which cost $100). I had my van towed to a Dodge dealership in vestal, NY where I was quoted $9000 to replace the transmission. See attached. This problem seems to be a known issue with the 2019 Grand Caravan based on research online, and I am concerned that Dodge has not adequately addressed this major transmission defect. I rejected the $9000 repair cost and had my van towed to a small town garage and I am still waiting for them to finish it. They estimated $4000. I have not gotten my van back yet so I do not know the final diagnosis/repair cost.

My car is stalling. There is a recall for the same year as my car. I called and check if my car was a part of the recall and it wasn’t. Clearly I am having the same issue. They should put all 2017 Dodge Grand Caravan in this recall.
The contact owns a 2016 Dodge Grand Caravan. The contact stated while driving at approximately 40 mph, the contact depressed the accelerator pedal to merge onto the highway and heard an abnormal whining sound from the engine compartment. The contact stated that the vehicle was losing motive power. The contact stopped, turned off, and restarted the vehicle however, when the transmission was shifted into drive(d), the vehicle failed to respond as needed. The contact stated no warning light was illuminated. The contact had the vehicle towed to a local dealer, where it was diagnosed and determined that the transmission pump had failed and damaged the transmission. The contact was advised that the transmission needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact researched online and related the failure to NHTSA campaign number: 16v461000 (power train); however, the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was informed of the failure. The failure mileage was 106,222.
The transmission failed. Yes, it is available for inspection. My safety and the safety of others were put at risk because the vehicle lost all forward propulsion as I was pulling into busy, fast moving traffic. The vehicle is pending repair at this time. There were no warning lamps or other symptoms. There was a loud pop, the rpm's immediately skyrocketed until the rev limiter was activated, and the vehicles was immediately disabled in the middle of oncoming traffic.
Car transmission is reacting very poorly will jump up and down and stall in the middle of the road manufacturer's safety problem and not sure all the problems but I know it's the transmission defect and the safety problem they never fixed it when they manufactured very unsafe transmission needs to be recalled.

Was driving home from work (on city streets) and noticed that the engine seemed to be idling higher than normal rpms. Van would not shift from first gear and would not accelerate beyond about 30 mph, very sluggish, while rpms rose above 3k and engine made a grinding/whining sound. No warning lights of any kind came on while driving or while stopped. While stopped at a traffic light, heard several loud clunks from under the hood and van had difficulty accelerating from stop. Was able to get it to the shop where they diagnosed transmission failure - the mechanics couldn't get it out of first gear by the time they were done looking at it and had to push it off the lift. Total cost of a remanufactured transmission plus new hubs and axles because they couldn't get the old ones removed without damaging them to remove/replace the transmission was $5600. Van has 128,000 miles.
I was driving my van down the highway and all of a sudden my van jerked me, acting like it was switching gears, the rpm reviving up, steering wheel pulling me into the opposite lane. I lost all power of the vehicle and could not go over 20mph. I was thankful no one was in the oncoming lane or behind me. There was no dash lights on or warning sign. The vehicle is currently at the dealership and it has been confirmed the transmission went out of the vehicle.
Van started to studder and not wanting to go while driving and starting the van. A current u87 Chrysler recall is in effect for my year of van. I called and they said that my VIN is not currently affected even though I am having the same issues as this recall.
After talking to others and researching and reading reports this seems to be another ghost problem: driving around town this issue doesn't usually occur but, on a long drive and coming to a stop or near stop such as a traffic light and/or in traffic my van starts to die. Depending on how long I am going to be stopped or slowed down to a crawl I either have to keep one foot on the brake while accelerating or switch to neutral. When switched to neutral I have to keep a foot on the accelerator while switching back into drive. Sometimes turning the ignition off and back on helps, usually not. The danger is the risk of being rear ended or stalling when pulling into traffic.

Cylinder 2 misfire code p0302. I replaced the spark plugs, coil, and injector. Code still remains. Vehicle seems to run fine.
The contact owns a 2015 Dodge Grand Caravan. The contact stated that while driving at 60 mph and depressing the brake pedal to come to a complete stop at the traffic stop light, the vehicle inadvertently lost motive power and stopped in the middle of the roadway. The contact stated that upon restarting the vehicle, the vehicle operated as needed. The contact stated that the failure recurred several times while driving, and the vehicle was able to restart after several attempts. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who informed the contact of an unknown recall but did not provide a diagnosis. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact related the failure to NHTSA campaign number: 16v461000(power train), but the VIN was not included. No further information was provided. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and a case was opened. The manufacturer referred the contact to the NHTSA hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was 135,000.
The transmission failed- according to the ntsb there was a recall for 2016 Dodge caravans for auto transmission pump failures. I was told my VIN # didn't match the recalled VIN numbers yet that's what failed on my vehicle costing about 4 thousand for repair work.
My family was in the vehicle driving on the hwy in town and suddenly the car revved all the way up to 5000 rpms and would not shift out of first gear. When my husband shifted the car from drive to reverse to park the transmission made a loud clunking noise and hard jerking motion, the check engine light came on. There were no warning signs or lamps. This happened all within 30 seconds of driving down the highway. Since the vehicle would not shift out of first gear our safety was put at risk being we were on a major hwy and unable to gain speed or move out of way of traffic.
Transmission has failed while I was driving 2 small children.
Transmission pump failure. Same issue as previously recalled models from 2013-2017. Transmission failed while driving. Vehicle will no longer shift. Vehicle is maintained properly and up to date on all other repairs/maintenance. Code pulled at mechanic is p1790. No response from Dodge. Any interaction is either ended by their representative disconnecting or rerouting me to a department that has no clue what to do.
I was driving down the road at about 40 mph when the transmission suddenly went out, posing a safety risk to not only myself, but other drivers on the road. It went out of gear, wouldn't go back in, and luckily enough, I was on a town road and not a highway. I had my vehicle towed and a transmission repair shop confirmed the entire transmission was completely blown out, which is ridiculous for a 5-year-old vehicle. Despite having over 150,000 miles, this still shouldn't be an issue. Besides the obvious safety risks, I'm now left with an over $5,000 repair bill.
The contact owns a 2015 Dodge Grand Caravan. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the check engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who diagnosed a failure with the transmission pump. The vehicle was not repaired. After investigating the failure, the contact related the failure to NHTSA campaign number: 16v461000 (power train); but the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 101,000.
Keep getting cylinder 2 missfire code I have changed everything it saids, I see this is a on going issue for years that people have reported yet its still not fixed and is costing us money because Dodge don't want to take responsibility for thier mess up.
Sudden total transmission failure while in traffic. Took a while to coax it through intersection. After a while able to coax it the mile home at about 10 mph with transmission screaming. Towed to dealer and full transmission replacement at 50,000 miles. 07.
As I was driving home on a city street, the entire car locked. I had no steering control. My brakes didn’t work the entire vehicle locked. In the middle of the street. I turned the ignition off, put it in park and restarted the car only then did it work properly. This is the second time this vehicle has locked. This is very dangerous as I had a child in the car with me and I was in traffic. My brakes didn’t work, I had to use two feet really hard then I was able to stop the vehicle. The steering wheel didn’t work. Nothing worked. I don’t know what’s the problem. The very first time this happened, while dropping the child off at school, I put the car in park, I was not able to get the shifter out of park. The car locked. I sat in my car, wondering what to do decided to go on the web and check out problems with this particular vehicle, then I noticed there is a little door leading to the shifter to change it manually. But when you are in traffic, there is no time to look for a screwdriver to open the door to do anything manually. This is a safety hazard and I really don’t know why there is not a recall on this vehicle.
Transmission went out.
I bought the car 2 weeks ago with 105k miles on it. The car has died approximately 20 times in the last 2 weeks while I am driving it. It is so insanely dangerous, you will be going down a busy street and the car completely dies without warning. There is no dash lights on, no warning. The power steering goes. It's an accident waiting to happen, it’s unacceptable. After spending 2k at the mechanic and still the same problem. They have now told me I need the tipm replaced at the dealership. Which also affects the lights, which are erratic, they come on or come off when they want, along with the horn. It’s also pushes the motors into limp mode so it runs really hard over 20 miles an hour even while idle. The car will also die while in idle/park or when you shift gears. The car is basically an all day event to start and if you get it to stay on, if you are able to get it, don’t touch the key or it will automatically the car off. The tipm system will also stay on, even while car is off causing your battery to drain.
I had the check engine light on for an unknown amount of time, as the initially lookover of the vehicle with the dealership advised it was a gascap sensor. However, they did attempt to fix by changing the sparkplugs when it was inspected June 2024 which didn't correct the issue. Since then, it has been looked at by 2 mechanic shops due to the following problem. When I drive at 40+ mph, the car starts shaking violently. When ran with diagnostic/ testing the engine, it was found that cylinder 2 keeps misfiring/ has a pressure issue, even after replacing the spark plugs and the fuel injector. Even after replacing those components, the cylinder misfire , lowered compression, and the shaking while driving all still persisted. They suggested fixing the issue with replacing the entire engine and avoiding driving until then, as driving it could potentially cause the engine to stop working while driving/ cause an accident. The dealership advised the engine issue would fall under the powertrain. It is available for review, as I have avoided driving it since, due to worries that the car will either stop working while I drive it, or the engine could result in an accident.
I drove like regular the transmission was starting to delay in response but nothing to this extreme. I parked it after an evening of m working; once parked the vehicle will shift through all gears but only park is engaged and stays engaged even while shifting to r, n, d it only stays parked. This is a safety issue as I can not even get it in neutral to tow and get it looked at or anything. I was not expecting it to not engage ever again so my vehicle is on an angle parked and I cannot gear shit it to n to get it moved and out of the road. Also the sway bar seems to be faulty as well. I think that’s suspension but it rocks back and forth really badly actually while taking on bumps or cracks it’s caused concerns enough that I stopped having my 3 children in it now while driving until an investigation is completed.
The contact owns a 2017 Dodge Grand Caravan. The contact stated that while driving at various highway speeds, the vehicle intermittently shifted into neutral(n) without warning. In addition, the contact stated that the instrument panel failed to provide correct gear selection. The contact stated that the gear indicator would show that the transmission was in reverse(r) while the transmission was in drive(d). The vehicle was taken to a dealer and the contact was referred to the manufacturer for assistance. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA hotline to report the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 112,000.
Transmission failure.
The transmission failed. The transmission pump failed and need to be replaced. This year model had a recall for failed transmission pumps. I was told my VIN was not part of the the recall -yet my transmission failed failed costing me over 3 thousand to repair.
Transmission failed with minimal warning. Getting transmission codes for pressure. There is a recall for transmission pressure but shows my VIN isn't a part of recall. This van has less than 88000 miles. I believe the recall should be expanded. This van was manufactured in the same date range affected.
The contact owns a 2015 Dodge Grand Caravan. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the check engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who diagnosed that the hydraulic pressure was low and determined that the transmission needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and advised the contact to take the vehicle to the dealer for a diagnostic test. The contact related the failure to NHTSA campaign number: 16v461000 (power train); however, the VIN was not included in the recall. The failure mileage was approximately 141,000.
