I was driving our automatic 2016 Dodge caravan when it suddenly lost power and wouldn't accelerate. It felt like I was about to run out of gas. The mechanic has spent the last 3 weeks doing extensive (and expensive) testing to find out what is wrong. He said that it is going into 'limp mode' and is stuck in second gear. It is undrivable and unsafe in the current condition. The mechanic said it is a 'shift solenoid' issue and that we need a brand new transmission, which will cost $4000. We bought the vehicle brand new and have only put 73,000 miles on it. Seems early to need a new transmission so I am wondering if some of the power train components used by the manufacturer were faulty.

Error code p076a -- drive solenoid circuit short or open wire. Transmission stuck in first gear, gear shift indicator on dash (digit) not lit , as an indicator of the failure also. Check engine light on drive to garage was normal freeway traffic. I recall a little roughness in the shifting/engaging as I backed into the spot to park when I arrived. When I pulled out of the space (forward) the transmission was locked in first gear. Drove home at 15 mph about 7 miles distance. I am the original owner, purchased from the dealership. Contact information has never changed, I get lots of mail from the dealership, but have never been contacted for any recalls ( there have been 7) I have never received any notification (for instance -- recall s37 from June 2016 has never been mentioned and is still not remedied). The vehicle has been to the dealership for service multiple times since s37 was issued.
The vehicle stalled and stopped. The engine light came on. The obdii test indicated transmission pressure, tsr solenoid, or gear ratio. The dealer said it is out of warrany and may require transmission rebuild.

1st occurrence: while driving on freeway on a hot day the car stalled without warning. On attempted restarts car would fire for a couple of seconds and quit. Tried other key: no help. After about 7 or 8 attempts the car would not crank and solenoid clicked. Towed home. Car set codes p0339 and p0344(intermittent crank and cam sensor). Charged battery . Replaced both sensors car initially would not start, then mysteriously fired up and ran fine. Ok for about a month. Battery tested ok charging voltage good when running. Not related to having just (over)filled gas tank. (much on internet about this: bad valve in tank allows evap to flood) 2nd occurrence. Once again driving on highway hot day. Once again stalled without warning. Same symptoms on attempted restart. After waiting about 15 minutes, car restarted, ran about 4 miles and stalled again. Attempted four or five restarts, then battery appeared to run down. Headlights would dim on start attempt. After a while the car started again but ran roughly on acceleration. Once again set same codes. At this point I noticed some electrical anomalies. Upon key on, the temp, fuel, and tach gauges would peg high and then fall back to normal. The power windows began to operate without the key on. Tow truck arrived and got it home. Car restarted in garage. Replaced both sensors again and battery (suspected intermittent open). 3rd occurrence on test drive got about 5 miles and onto highway. Once again stalled. This time restarted, turned around and got about 2 miles then quit again. This time no restart( same 2-3 seconds). This time set code p0344 only(cam sensor intermittent). Car restarted later back in shop. Research on the internet has got me thinking about the tipm (totally integrated power module).

My 2007 Dodge Grand Caravan was parked in the driveway and my 4 yr old was able to shift the van out of park into neutral without depressing the brake or starting the vehicle. The van coasted down the driveway, across the street and came to rest in the neighbor's yard all the while with my 4 yr old in the driver's seat. I would estimate the vehicle was traveling up to 10mph down the sloped driveway. No injury or damage luckily occurred. Subsequently, the Dodge dealership states the shift interlock solenoid failed. The dealership will not cover under warranty. I believe this should be considered a recall issue since this is a major safety issue and has been the previous subject of NHTSA intervention with the automakers.
Transmission shifed from fourth gear to second gear at 60 mph. Check engine light came on and transmission would not shift. Dealer replaced trans mission control module. Nine days later transmission would not shift out of second gear. Dealer replaced transmission solenoid.

The main problem was the vehicle not going into gear or moving, plus we notice that on any incline the vehicle will roll backwards if you have to stop at a light. The first problem has been fixed, according to the mechanic there was a leak and the solenoid was replaced. However, we are still experiencing problems with the incline, which they say is normal and the transmission is operating as designed. I totally disagree, I've been driving for a while and only manual transmission react this way on an incline. Thus far the vehicle is still under warranty and there has been no cost. My wife refuses to drive the vehicle after these problems.

In January 2003 I experienced a problem getting my van to shift into drive after I had backed out of my driveway. On February 17, 2003 my husband was driving the van and experienced problems getting it to shift gears while he was driving it. He added transmission fluid and later that evening I drove the van to a store two miles from our house and at 35 mph the rpms would not go below 3 and the check engine light came on. I called the dealership first thing Tuesday morning and took it the shop on Thursday. They repaired a leak in the transmission (which we had had repaired previously) and replaced the water pump. Two days later while out running errands the check engine light came on again. I had to exit the freeway because the engine would not shift gears again and at 50 mph (in a 60 mph zone) the engine was at 4 rpms. Before I could get home the engine quit in the middle of a highway intersection with traffic coming at me from behind at 55 mph. I was able to get it started but it lurched for about a quarter mile or so and I just drove no more than 30 mph for the next 5 miles to my home. My husband took it back to the dealership on Monday and was told that the solenoid (sorry if I misspelled it) needed to be replaced. He was told to take the van home and they would call when the part came in. On Monday, March 3, he called and spoke with the parts department and they informed him that there are 24,000 of this part on backorder nationwide.

After 22800 miles (Feb 7, 2002), the transmission solenoid pack failed (slight leaking), causing a check engine light to come on and forcing bad shifting. The dealer replaced this under warranty. At 49,500 miles (September 8, 2003), the check engine light came on again and the van was shifting rough again. Since the main warranty had been exceeded at 36k miles and the part from the first dealer repair was warranted for 1 year/12000 miles, the dealer offered no recourse. Found a good (non-dealer) mechanic to replace it for less (still cost $525. . . Dealer wanted over $600). Dealer claimed that this was unusual to happen once, let alone twice, but still wouldn't help me.
