My transmission went out on me on 11/22/02. I got up on a long birdge called the buckman bridge with my 3 children and 2 nephews coming home from school when the car wouldn't move. I was very terrified because I could have been rear ended and knocked off of the side of the bridge. It was very cold on that night and me and the 5 children had to walk down a bridge at night with no side rails on it. I had to call a tow truck to tow it to my house. I had a mechanic do a diagnostic test and it read a transmission code. So, therefore, I had it towed to transmission shop that reprinted the transmission was gone out and several components had to be replaced. Now, I'm out $2000 dollars for a car I have had for 10 months. After talking to several of my CO-workers at least 4 of them know someone that owns a 2000 Dodge interpid and has had this same problem within the last month. I'm a single mother and thought I was getting a dependable car. I have since searched the internet and have found that Dodge/Chrysler has experienced alot of complaints about transmission problems and I can't believe that it going to take someone dying because of failure of transmission for this to be resolved. Please advise me on actions I can take. Dt.

The seat belt buckle issue we mentioned to the dealership when we had the car in to repair the output speed sensor. Even though we discovered there is a recall on seat belts for the very problem we have had with the seat buckles coming loose that hold our child seats in, the dealership told us that they would not repair ours. The output speed sensor issue almost caused an accident as it instantly downshifted the car to 2nd gear. It caused a terrible jolt to us and we were almost rear ended. . . Taillights didn't flash to warn other cars. Air conditioner issue, well, that just never worked properly. The temperature selector often doesn't change the temperature. Cold comes out luke warm.

Metal chips were found in the oil from the transmission and it had to be replaced. Car only had 30,000 miles on it. I got the car with 21,000 miles on it. Now the car has 50,000 miles on it and the transmission needs to be replaced again.
While driving at highway speed of 60 mph vehicle loss acceleration, could not exceed 30 mph. Vehicle taken to a repairs shop, and informed consumer that transmissiom had lost all gears except 1st gear. Manufacturer was notified. Feel free to provide any further information.
I drove my car to work without incident. Car was parked at work overnight. Left work the next morning, while accelerating up to speed I noticed that the car was jerking hard as it shifted through the gears (automatic). Before I got home (3 miles from work) the engine check light came on. When I arrived at home I cycled the shifter from park to drive (while car was parked in garage). While doing this the transmission would hesitate and then shift very hard into drive which made the car lurch forward (park and foot brake were applied). I had the car towed to the local dealership where they replaced the input speed sensor, this was covered under the original manufacturer's warranty, no cost to me. The next incident occurred in a similar fashion, the car was parked at work. When I left the next morning I noticed that the speedometer was not working (indicated "0" even though the car was moving). The shift selector on the dash was in [2] even though I had the shifter in the auto-stick mode which should start out in [1]. I took the shifter out of autostick and placed it in auto-shift, the acceleration was very sluggish, it was obvious that the transmission was stuck in [2]. As I was driving home the check engine light came on. While parked in the garage I cycled the shifter from park to drive, once again the transmission hesitated, then shifted very hard into drive, causing the car to lurch forward. I had the car towed to the local dealership where they replaced the output speed sensor. The original manufactures warranty had expired, I bought an extended warranty which covered the repair minus my $100. 00 deductible. I have read numerous complaints through your website from other owners with the same problem, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to realize that their is a real "safety" issue here. When is your department going to inform the manufacturer that this is not acceptable? maybe after someone is "killed!!".
Intermittently gear shift would have to be shifted back and fourth to get vehicle to start. Dealer and manufacturer were both notified. Feel free to provide any further information.

First to go was the brakes and rotors, then the rack and pinion system. Next was the transmission and now the diffentail and tie rods. Dt.
The first 10 minutes of driving in weather of 50 deg f and colder, the transmission would suddenly shift out of whatever gear its in and into neutral. I would have to rev the engine a little bit and it would shift back into gear. The transmission fluid had a burned smell to it so I changed the filter and fluid. I use atf+3 7176, as recommended. But that didn't solve the problem. Then I thought it was because the car was cold, so before driving, I would let the car warm up for 5-10 minutes. That didn't solve the problem either. I've been researching the transmission problems on this vehicle and have found many complaints in regards to this transmission. There are even tbs on NHTSA, 21-07-98 & 21-02-98a, relating to my problems. I wish there is a recall on these. I can't believe a transmision would fail with only 62000 miles. In the mean time, I've read success stories from other owners who got Chrysler to fix the problem. I'm going to give it a shot now before I have total failure while driving some where far from home.

Transmission had to be replaced in vehicle three times within 70,000 miles of each other. Also, when traveling 30-35mph vehicle shook violently. Please provide further details.
Vehicle was at stand still and ready to pull off. Then, vehicle pulled off in 2nd gear, feeling very sluggish. Consumer pulled over/ turned it off, and put it in automatic to see what gears were activating. After a half hour all gears, but 4th gear, were operating. Dealer has gotten a chance to complete inspection andto give an explanation.
Fails to go into overdrive. Safety factor, was on a 600 mile trip, got onto the interstate, and would not shift out of 3rd into overdrive. Was almost rear ended by semi truck, as was only doing 45 mph, as rpm were getting very high.
While traveling at approximately 5 mph gear shift located between driver and passenger seats was bumped. When gear shift was bumped, vehicle went from drive to park bringing vehicle to a complete stop. Dealership stated that there should have been a mechanism in gear shift which prevented this from happening. Please provide any additional information/attachments.

This transmission has been reported to have a high failure rate and the failure would be disasterous at high speed.
Transmission will come out of gear on its own and drop down to a low gear. It then locks out the higher gears. This is a dangerous operation as it could result in a accident by being rearended from another vehicle. Chrysler has had problems with this since 1992 and at one time repaired or replaced all defective vehicles. It is still an on going safety hazard.
Transmission shifts down while driving at any speed. Please provide additional information.
No summary listed for above vehicle.
Contiued transmission problems, repairs made 2times, dealer doesn't know why it happens, engine rpm surges extremly high. Average rpm at 60mph is 2000rpm, it is surging well over 3500rpm on a flat surface.
Transmissions went out of vehicle.

Shifts rough in lower gears.
While turning off of highway onto exit ramp vehicle kept turning off while continuing home; tow truck came by to pick up vehicle and carry it to a dealer. Vehicle was inspected and had transmission replaced.
Transmission hesitates and is sporadic. Has been in for a complete overhaul of the transmission. I still have the problem and have had it in for repair at least 3 other times. The dealer now says they cannot recreate the problem. I have had many people drive my car and they have noticed the rough shifting as well as the hesitant take off. This could be dangerous because you don't know when the transmission will engage and thrust your car forward. The other problem is the power windows. The driver window has a squeak and a grind. The dealer says they fixed it but it is doing it again. The back windows stopped functioning altogether and a part had to be ordered. The dealer did install this part in early April 2000.
Transmission has not seated into park on more than one occasion. Key can be removed from ignition no matter where the shift lever is.
My 1997 Dodge Intrepid transmission has gone 3 times since I've owned it I purchased it in early 1999 with 48000 miles the 1st time the shifterwould not go all the way in to park and at 62000 miles it went and all I had was reverse. I had a warranty through the car dealer with a 250. 00 deductible. They rebulit transmission and at 84000 the samething happen 13mos. Later and of coarse no warranty so I had to pay full shot this time at the sum of $ 1,300. 00. Now it seems that it is starting to act up again . What to do? other than this this has been the most dependable running car as far as any thing else goes I have ever had. And yes I do have the filter & fluid changed when it should. One more thing I've had the car checked a couple of times for when I start out from a stop wether slow or quick the car sometimes seems like the universals are bad(like on a rear wheel drive car) but I was told cv joints and all else was fine so I asume it has something to do with the transmission.
Transmission needed to be replaced after only 46,200 miles. Mechanic said it was caused by somthing breaking loose inside.
Delayed engagement of the transmission transaxle on several occasions. Mjs.
While traveling at 40 mph driver heard a pop and vehicle performed as if it had come out of gear. When attempting to go again driver heard a high pitched whine and vehicle would only go approximately 7-8 mph.
Consumer could not get vehicle to reverse, the vehicle than cut off and would not restart, dealer cannot find remedy for the problem.
Consumer states that when car is on you don't have to have your foot on the brake to change gears, or take the car out of park.
