On 3/16/06 the engine in my 1996 Dodge Intrepid caught on fire out of the blue. This car only had 60,000-70,000 miles on it. An investigator for Chrysler corp. Looked at the car and filed a report with Chrysler corp. Apparently there was a recall in 1998 having to do with fuel leaking from the fuel injection rail or o-rings which I was never aware of. Chrysler denied my claim and stated that they had sent me a notice in Feb. 1999 at my current residence, although we did not even close on my house until may 1999. I never received a notice, and this fire was a result of a fuel leakage. When I called the customer claims resolution dept. And explained that I never knew about the recall etc. I was told that once Chrysler makes a decision to deny a claim there can no rebuttal, and that I would need to contact a lawyer if I wanted to go any further in resolving this. Needless to say it would cost a lot to get a lawyer so I am stuck paying the costs to repair the engine which was a result of a defect caused by the manufacturer.
We started noticing a strong gas smell in our car and bad fuel economy. The smell was so strong that it was making us sick after being in the car for more than 15-20 minutes. I took the car to a shop and they told me that it the "fuel rail is leaking and the fuel injection o-rings need to be replaced also". The shop cannot get the parts due to a shortage. They said that the parts are only being used for "safety issues for dealers first". So nothing is being done to fix the problem. We need our car and it could possibly catch on fire due to this problem and we cannot get it fixed.
My name is myra bahr and I own a 1997 Dodge Intrepid w/86k miles. I have well cared for this vehicle. This past weekend, I have experienced the engine seized/quit issue while driving 75 mph on the expressway with my two kids. I figured it was the heat; so I let it cool down. Started back on our road trip. . Which it happened again 10 miles later. Mind you; there was a full tank of gas from shell, recent oil change and fuel filter change. One year earlier, I have replaced the thermostat/injection rail for the same problem. I have called customer service at Chrysler-Dodge but the recall for this year is only with the 3. 5 engine; not the 3. 3 engine-so they will not pay for the repair at the dealership. Thank god my older mother wasn't driving the car; for she wouldn't be able to handle the manual steering and able to get the car safely to the shoulder without causing a severe accident. I just wanted to be heard and share my story w/you.
The contact owns a 1996 Dodge Intrepid. The thermo plastic rail for the fuel split and leaked gas all over the motor, almost causing vehicle to catch on fire.
Consumer is experiencing problems having recall repairs performed on the 1996 Dodge Intrepid. Each time the consumer went to the dealer to have the recall repair performed, he/she was told nothing needed to be done with the obd codes and only the gas cap were being checked for pollution. The consumer was given several excuses as to why the vehicle could not be repaired.
Consumer took vehicle to the dealer to have the fuel injection rail replaced which was leaking under the o rings, and within a month the same problem recurred.
Dodge Intrepid 1997, fuel leak in the fuel rail. The consumer did some research and discovered there was a recall on the o-rings, however when the consumer entered her VIN into the database the information came back as the recall already being taken care of. 8-10 months later the engine light illuminated, however the dealer told the consumer the vehicle just needed a tune-up. After a few days the consumer began to smell a strong smell of gas, upon inspecting the vehicle, the mechanic stated the o-rings were leaking. The consumer had no idea it was the same recall she had researched about earlier. The consumer then realized it was and tried to get a refund, however the request was denied because the manufacturer stated the consumer knew about the recall and did not get it fixed. The consumer stated this is the third time she is having problems with the leaking.

The fuel rail was resealed on Nov. 28th 2003 by lithia foothills and subsequest to the repair the injector o rings are leaking. This car belonged originally to my brother-in-law as his company car. He sold it to his mother, who, for 2 years, drove it only 1000 miles. She had told me several times that she kept smelling fuel. And, her air conditioner leaked and had to be recharged several times during this period. Upon her death in March, I acquired the car. On 7/09/04 I took the 1997 Dodge Intrepid to Dodgeland of columbia to check for a fuel leak. At the time of check-in for the vehicle I sited the recall 98v-184 and the odi resume summary for investigation rq98-018. This car had been repaired in the recall, however the odi resume states there is no time limit for subsequent failures. Dodgeland checked the car and stated that the fuel leak was not due to the fuel rail or the o-rings, they said I had a bad fuel injector. I told the service technician at that time that if the fuel injector was bad, I should be having performance problems, and I was not. However, they continued to deny this fuel leak had anything to do with the recall. They quoted a $425. 00 estimate for the repair, and stated I should not drive it anywhere. I took the car home and took it to an independent mechanic for repair. This shop found just what I expected that they would find: the o-ring was leaking, the fuel injector was not faulty. I would like the $40 amount I paid Dodge to diagnosis this problem refunded, as well as the 375. 00 repair bill I paid to an independent mechanic.
Consumer stated that her vehicle was leaking fuel. She stated there was a smell of fuel while driving, and stated this is a health hazard. She stated she took her vehicle to the dealer for repair, and was told that this problem had already been repaired on 2/11/99, and will not be repaired again on a recall. She said that the recall was for the o-rings and the fuel system gas line & fuel injection system. She felt as though, this should not apply when it was possible that the o rings were checked and not replaced. Please help.
Nhtsa#98-v-184-000 fuel injection delivery system can leak fuel from some of the sealing o-rings from hair line crack in the thermoset fuel injection rail. Consumer state had the same problem however this vehicle is not included due to the VIN# dealer notified.
I originally received a manufacturer recall- 98v18400 -beginning of 1999 in may of 1999 I took car to king auto dealership to have recall completed. I recently had car towed to the only certified dealer ship on the island . Discovered fuel o-rings were leaking to some degree from all injectors. Strong fuel smell coming from air conditioner and heater unit. This is my wife 's car and my kids car. This is a safety related defect which substantantially impairs resale value risk of fire plus a health risk to occupants. The service manager before even having a technician analize the problem told me that he had talked to district manager in honolulu that defect is not covered by recall. This 790/ recall was not successfully completed by king auto center. My investigation indicates this is a widespread pattern that should be covered by the manufacture under secret warranties . Have discovered that king auto center still to this day does not have the new parts no. For fuel rail assembly. Dt.
Dealer has replaced a vacuum hose in the fuel system but fuel odor has reoccured. I'm concerned that a fire might occur. Dt.

The dealer refused to honour this service citing that it's a second recall. Person contacted at gejnas is patty (service manager) phone number 2157447700. Mr.

Recall 98v184 000/fuel injection system leakage: received a manufacturer's recal 790 notice concerning dealer's corrective action that stated the following: dealers will replace the nitrile rubber o-rings in the fuel rail with fluorocarbon o-rings. If fuel injectior o-rings leak after pressure testing, injector o-rings will be replaced as well. Both dealer and manufacturer informed consumer that they were only responible to replace o-rings, and injector would be at consumer's cost. Dealer's service manger name is john naro at forthteen hundred motors in nashua, nh; phone # 603/888-0200. Manufacturer's service representative is deanna furnari. Both the dealer and the manufacturer claimed they were responsible only for the fuel rail o-rings.
A dealership replaced this recalled part in March 1999, however this same part was defective and I replaced it in December 2000. My question, if this part was defective enough for a national recall and the replacement part failed, wouldn't that cost be the responsiblity of the maker? (Chrysler) I bought this car because of the warranty, but after only three years. . . . . It's not turned out to be a very good investment. I'm a single mom, I don't know about cars. I do have routine maintainance done, but that's at the hands of others who are suppose to know what they are doing. I had difficult with allen samuel dealership, here in houston and needed someone I felt I could trust to do these repairs. Plus the mechanic I chose came highly recommended and could do the work at night. This vehicle is my only source of transportation to work. No safety defect found in summary.
Cold start=ok. Drive=ok. Stop engine=ok. Won't restart until it is cold again.

During and after driving the vehicle, a 1996 Dodge Intrepid with a 3. 3l engine, there was a strong smell of raw gasoline. I took the car in for service and the resolution was replacement of the fuel rail due to cracks and the fule injectors due to leaking o-rings. These problems are identical to those addressed in NHTSA campaign id number: 98v184000 which address the 3. 5l engine in 1996 Dodge Intrepids.
Manufacturer's recall notice received concerning fuel injection system leakage. Called dealer on several occasions. Was informed by dealer that they do not have the tools or the parts-- to call back. Been four weeks, and still no results in getting recall honored.
Fuel pressure regulator leaked fuel onto the engine compartment which may have caused a fire. Please provide further information.
The fuel rail and o-rings were replaced first, and I paided for the repair. After I picked up the car, on the way home, it leaked again. Called the dealer, and they came and picked up the car. When called on 12/23/1999, I was told the car was ready to be picked up, and that it was fixed at the Dodge dealer, due to a recall on the fuel rail, and o-rings. My big quisten is should I get my money back for the first repair?.
