1 Automatic Transmission Cooler problem of the 2002 Dodge Neon

Failure Date: 10/16/2010

I was driving on the interstate when, with no warning, I felt a jolt (like being hit from behind), then a strange sound from the engine compartment. I was able to control the car and pull off to the side of the road where I discovered that I had lost all gears. The car would not shift and would not move. I had to have it towed home (about 80 miles) where I took it to a transmission shop. They did a complete diagnostic evaluation and determined that the transmission was completely blown along with the cooling system radiator. I had to have the transmission rebuilt and the radiator replaced at a cost of almost $1,800. After talking with several transmission shops and reading comments on various websites on the internet, it appears that this type of transmission failure is very common with the Dodge Neons. It would seem reasonable that this be addressed in a recall by Chrysler.

Failure Date: 12/29/2005

Plastic transmission lines running through only one radiator system. Their warranty did not cover it.

3 Automatic Transmission Cooler problem of the 2003 Dodge Neon

Failure Date: 03/05/2005

I was driving to store at moderately slow speed and transmission slipped out of gear and car would not move. Checked transmission fluid and it was empty. Car towed to dealer and I was told the radiator had given out and the coolant had circulated through the transmission. Radiator was replaced and coolant was supposedly flushed from transmission. Chrysler did pay for most of repair but only after calling Chrysler.

4 Automatic Transmission Cooler problem of the 2000 Dodge Neon

Failure Date: 01/14/2004

See complaint 10053281 for initial back round info. Radiator replaced due to coolant transmission blow-out. That cost me $500. Then when the 5 star dealer tested the car, the transmission failed. Dealer wanted 600 just to investigate and said that it could cost as much as $2,500 addl to replace. I just read about complaint 10039597 with same problem. It sounds like there is a mfg defect that Chrysler is not owning up to. I called Chrysler about this and they were not going to do anything about this because I did not buy extended coverage. Please get back to me. Thank you.

5 Automatic Transmission Cooler problem of the 2000 Dodge Neon

Failure Date: 03/20/2003

Fitting in bottom of radiator popped out causing transmission fluid to leak out. Replaced radiator and 3 months later had to have transmission fixed. At the time of the radiator malfunction the car had 34,000 miles on it. At the time of the transmission failure, the car had 35,000 miles on it. The warranty period ended January 1, 2003. The failure of the radiator happened in the middle of March, 2003. Daimler Chrysler only paid $250. 00 to have radiator replaced. I was told by the general manager of a 5-star Chrysler dealership that the transmission could not have been harmed at the time the radiator failed. It cost me $1251. 00 to have my transmission fixed. The second gear band was in pieces in the transmission.
