4 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2004 Dodge Neon

Failure Date: 02/24/2009

I drove my 2004 Dodge Neon sxt to school last Tuesday and parked it everything fine. I came out to leave started it and I had no reverse. It kicked in for a second and then again nothing. I put it in drive and the same thing nothing. When I got out and opened the hood I saw all the transmission fluid on the ground had it towed to dealership. I have a 70,000 mile powertrain warranty with 69,765 miles on it. The dealer said radiator failed causing trans fluid and coolant to mix through out. Albany Dodge tried to tell me I didn't have a 7yr 70k warranty only after the production of all my original paper work they agreed to fix trans. But not radiator or coolant system they want over 600$ I called around and found a place for 250$ after all the tows and everything 450$ later my car is at albany Dodge for the trans work and I will have to pay them 100$ deductible. While researching this on the internet I have found this has happened over 25 other times the same way with out warning! I am disgusted about the hoops I had to jump through for my warranty to be honored then to find out that its all revolved around these faulty radiators used in the 99-05 models and has happened like clock work at an average of 66,883 I paid a lot of money for this car and I can't help but feel like Chrysler as a whole has made quit a bit of money as a result of this problem please take a look it took me a 1/2 an hour to find over 10 of the same exact story as mine.

She was pinned under the car for about 15 minutes before a family member found her and moved the car off her. She has multiple abrasions, some stitches, and is undergoing testing for internal injuries.

6 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2002 Dodge Neon

Failure Date: 08/07/2008

While driving on the highway felt a jolt and loss of power. The speedometer then dialed all the way up and then back to zero. Pulled off to check it out, as I slowed down on the offramp heard a crunching sound and the car shut off. Started right back up but wouldn't go into gear, the transmission had locked up! I couldn't even put it in neutral to push it off the offramp. Had it towed to a shop where they put in a used, not new or rebuilt but a used transmissions with 60,000 miles on it for $1,800. The car had 81,000 miles at the time of failure and is barely six years old! I have also had to replace the throttle body and catalytic converter before 75,000 miles. By far the transmission is the most unacceptable component failure. At only 81,000 miles and six years old Dodge needs to recall these automatic transmissions!.

8 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2002 Dodge Neon

Failure Date: 12/20/2006

Driving at 49. 9k miles on the odometer. This being 19. 9k miles after warranty expires (30k mile warranty). Just made a long trip from hampton, va to appleton, WI. About a week after arriving in WI, I am heading to work and start to hear a high-pitched whine. Within about 10 minutes of hearing this whine, I was able to pull into a park and ride just as the car stopped moving. I was still able to rev the engine, but no acceleration. I placed the car into park and turned it off. I started it back up, and still could not get the car to move. Placed the car into neutral, and the car still would not move when I tried to push it. Found out, after car was towed to an auto shop, that a pinion bolt inside the transmission (2002 model) had broken off and was the cause to the seizure of the vehicle. If I had been driving down the highway, and this had happened, the car would have stopped in the middle of the highway and been the cause of a serious accident that, thankfully, was avoided in this instance. New transmission (2006 model) installed. The new safety feature for this model is that it has metal plates (brackets) around the offending bolt so that this does not happen. Semi-off topic: if they (the manufactures of the transmission, and subsequently the dealerships that sell the vehicle) knew this was an issue (apparent from the introduction of the metal plates for the bolt) why was it not announced and corrected while under warranty for those that have bought the vehicle in 2002?.

9 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2004 Dodge Neon

Failure Date: 02/28/2006

: the contact stated there was a leak in the transmission. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection and repairs over 10 times. The dealer replaced the transmission pan, transmission stick, head gasket, bolts and the dealer sent the vehicle to a transmission expert. Although, these changes were made, the transmission continues to leak. The dealer recently determined the problem can not be duplicated and no additional repairs were made. Contact was notified on 0313-2006 by m&m Dodge to bring vehicle to dealership for transmission work. The contact hoped that this will solve the leak problem.

10 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2000 Dodge Neon

Failure Date: 10/15/2004

2000 Dodge Neon-I have had this car for 5 years and use it solely for commuting to and from work. I am a careful driver and do not abuse this vehicle. During these 5 yrs I have had the following work on this car; replaced the brakes twice within the first 2 yrs replaced the battery 3 times over 5 years replaced the transmission at 70k replaced the radiator at 70k the car performs very poorly in ice and snow. I have spun out on several major highways merely doing less than 10 mph in snow/slush. I was told my mechanic that it is the weight distribution and poor design of my vehicle that this happens. My tires have always been maintained/replaced when tread was getting low. I recently paid $400 for a set of new michelin harmony tires hoping that the upcoming snow and ice season may not kill me. Car had a musty/fishy odor when I used the heater during the first 2 years. This has since gone. My transmission died during a thunderstorm on my way home from work. It gave no warning, all fluids had just been checked the weekend before when my oil was changed. This incident resulted in over $1900 worth of repair charges. I had just bought out my lease that very week. The $1900 I paid was my entire savings. The following repair work outstands; cdplayer is dead. It chewed up my cds. (1 year) my rear passenger door lock buzzes when I lock it. It apparently needs a new door lock assembly and actuator. (2nd year) the trunk latch does not automatically open. It takes several attempts to lock. (1st year).

I have had trouble with the transmmition since I bought the car in 2000. It shifs hard and at times seems to miss 2nd gear. The car was still under warrenty so Dodge would not autherize Monday chev. (who I bought it from)to do the repaires. The first repair was an adjustment, second was a modual change out and so was the 3rd repair. On the fourth time of taking the car to to one of the Dodge dealers they said they "did a compleat overhaul of the transmmition". At this time I am still having troouble with the shifting. The brakes did not work this morning and the throutal stuck open when I steped on the gas. The car is no longer under warenty. There was a recall in July 2001on the hose to the brake each time I contacted archer Dodge they told me they did not have the part in to make the repair. Vehicle was difficult to get in reverse. This was worse when 20 to 85 degrees outside. Vehicle would not shift into drive until 55-60 mph, but 1 and 2 were okay. I had the vehicle repaired at local chicago non-selling Dodge dealer at my cost of $1,200. The dealer advised front pump seal failed causing entire transmission to overheat and fail. The service writer advised this is a common failure with these vehicles. Reviewing web sites (including this one) I see similar complaints for this exact set of symptons. I have recently requested reimbursement from Dodge, but they have not had a chance to respond yet.

This car "jumps" out of gear and has done this twice. The first time, I had the car in park in my driveway and all of a sudden it rolled forward and hit my garage. There was some damage, but the dealership would not pay for it. They made me feel as though it was all in my head. The second time, I was driving 75 miles per hour and it went into neutral. The dealership is not aware of this. I did not tell them yet because they do not believe me and they tell me everything is fine. The loud "chirping" noise is supposedly coming from the dash. They have not fixed it because they do not know where in the dash it is. Help!!!.
