I have had nothing but problems with my 2003 Dodge Neon. The electrical problems have ranged from losing power completely while driving to dimming dashboard lights to corroded wires going into the power control module and fuses shorting out. This latest incident involves the seatbelt and brake lights flashing while the rest of the dashboard lights went dim. I'm tired of spending money on this car - but I can't sell it in good conscience to someone else. Dodge should be forced to recall these vehicles for new electrical wiring harnesses and power control modules as corrosion of wires and subsequent shorts in wiring appear to be common place, costing thousands of dollars to consumers and potential fatal accidents.

I turned on my headlights and after about thirty seconds, I noticed a smell that smelled like something was burning. Maybe another 15 seconds or so after that, I saw smoke pouring out of the steering column. Pulling off the road now, I rolled down the windows and shut off the lights remembering that other owners have had problems with their wiring harnesses melting. The smoke dispersed and the car seemed fine. I have not used my headlights since.
Wire harness from under steering column caught fire for no reason what so ever. Car has 77000 miles on it. No covered under warranty. I have been driving my car back and forth from college and running errands around town. I have a completely stocked 2000 Dodge Neon ES. I use the headlights most of the time, even during the day, to increase visibility. One night, I was driving through my town. I smelled something burning but not thinking anything of it since I was near a rural area that could have camp fires lit. This happened about 2 months ago. Then I noticed that my headlights were not working as they used to. The fog lights would turn on sometimes and other times not. I figured that it was just a switch and not a big deal so I did nothing to fix it. Then my high beams stopped working about 2 weeks ago. I did a bit of research to try to determine the problem. I stumbled upon a website and read about looking at the multi-function switch. Several other people have had the same problem. I just got finished checking out my car. The wiring harness that connects to the mfs is melted as has evidence of burn marks. The headlights currently work but the fog lights and high beams do not. I have taken several pictures of the melted harness and will send them to whoever I need to. I have read up on replacing the wiring harness but it is rather expensive. Especially if it will melt again sometime in the near future. I believe the part number is 5183442aa based on several sources. I will be replacing this part probably on my own to save some money, especially on a part I should not have to be ordering in the first place.

My headlights/fog lights started flickering and all of my dash lights illuminated. I then lost all power for a brief second and then the car came back to normal. I pulled the steering column apart and found the multi-function switch has started to melt. I have not replaced this yet as I just found this today.
My multi-function switch on my 2003 Dodge Neon short circuited and melted the plug that it connects to I have contacted Dodge and searched multiple junk yards for the plug and have been unable to find one Dodge charges $1100 for the wiring harness I have no low beam headlights or fog lights and cannot afford the plug from the dealership nothing has been done to fix my problem.
The multi-switch and wiring harness behind my steering wheel melted rendering my headlights (low-beam) and fog lights inoperable.

There was smoke coming from the steering column. I immediately shut down the car. After starting the car, I realized my headlights were not working. I pulled on the multi-function switch twice and regained the use of my headlights. I dropped the vehicle off at the dealership (big valley Dodge/Subaru) on 5/24/06. On 5/26/06, at about 4:20 pm, I received a call from marvin in the service department. He advised they were going to replace the multi-function switch and wire harness. He also advised I was being charged $386. 00 + tax as my car is out of warranty. It seems as there is no TSB on this problem although there are many Neon owners having the same problems. I have a 2003 Dodge Neon srt-4 and was driving to work when smoke started coming out of my steering column. I got to work and pulled the steering column apart and found that the connector for the multi-function switch (controls the headlights & turn signals) had melted into the switch. Upon discovering that the problem had been had with multiple people driving Neons from the same model year, I purchased a replacement switch and wiring harness. I spliced the wires back into place and everything worked but my headlights and fog lights. Upon further investigation, the fuse for the headlights had been blown and needed replacing as well. Questions posed to Dodge/daimler-Chrysler resulted in dead ends because there were no visible flames.

Multi-function switch inside steering column melted wiring harness for headlight switch. Smoke and heat came out of steering column cover. Had to replace dash harness and multi-function switch.
The vehicle caught on fire from the wiring under the dashboard. This happened on September 6, 2005, contacted the dealer, and they were going to investigate it, but have not done so. The vehicle cut off, and smoke came out from under the dash. Then , the vehicle turned on four times by itself while consumer holding the key in hand. The horn started blowing and windshield wipers came on.
Headlight switch and associated wiring harness shorted and melted resulting in loss of all interior and exterior lighting.
While the vehicle was parked in a parking lot, some one informed the consumer that vehicle was on fire. By the time the consumer reached the vehicle all of the windows were covered with soot. Fire department arrived and extinguished the flames, and concluded that the fire started behind the dashboard.

While driving there was a noise, then the dashboard lights went out. When the lights went out, the dashboard components became inoperative. The dashboard lights came back on within 15-30 seconds, but all the warning lights stayed illuminated for a few seconds before going off. This failure was caused by an electrical system failure, but dealership nor manufacturer were very helpful.

This car has used more than 10 quarts of oil since new (not counting changes). It has just over 20k miles now and still uses oil. It does not smoke or leak. The fuel mileage is nowhere near the advertised mileage. The dealer was contacted regarding no brake lights just after purchase. After two trips to the dealer (and the service writer telling us that we removed the cigarette lighter adapter wrong), they discovered the wiring harness for the backup lights was crushed by the shifter in reverse and shorted the lights. After complaining about poor starting and shuddering after a cold soak, the dealer replaced the injector o-rings, which solved the shudder, but not the mileage. Nothing has helped the oil usage, not even the two trips to the dealer to replace a baffle in the valve cover and an "oil consumption" test, which we performed. Yes, it uses oil. I should've bought my daughter a Nissan, or, like I just bought myself, a brand new Ford pickup. This was my first and last daimler-Chrysler product. . . Ever!.
Oil leaked from failed head gasket or cracked head, exhaust leak from head or manifold. Speedometer dial stop working. The car only has 30000 miles on it. My repair man wants $500. 00 just to tear down the engine to see if it is the gasket or a cracked head, and thats just the labor and not including parts. This is a safty problem that should be cause for a recall. How many complaints or lives will it take before NHTSA takes action aganist this car manufacturing company?.

Instrument panel works occasionally. Can't tell how fast/can't tell if gas is in vehicle, and gauges inside panel won't light up. Please provide any further information.
Heater went out and vehicle was filled with smoke. Heat blew only on high. Also, connector wiring in dash was burned. Contacted dealer, and dealer stated that wiring connector was not avilable by manufacturer.
Air bag light and engine light stay on, where mileage displays it says "no bus" I have taken the car to the dealership on more than 3 occasions, I have seen no results.
Speedometer, odometer, trip meter, gas and temp gauges will all stop working. Sometimes they'll all work, sometimes they'll all quit. The speedometer, odometer and tripmeter will all go out every time I drive the car after it's been running about 20 minutes. The gas and temp gauges will go out occasionally.

The whole dash unit ( circuit board) which controls the speedometer did not work. My mechanic stated he has replaced a number of them over the last several monthsnic.

Circuit board behind instrument panel caught fire as I drove,sending smoke through dash both to left and right of speedometer-gauge area. No flame ever visible. Smoke stopped of its own accord. Gas gauge dropped to indicate "empty" - then returned to proper indication. I continued to drive home, then to garage, no apparent effect on any operating systems. Circuit board and gauge kit were replaced at no charge to me. (car still in warranty) service manager reported hole burned in circuit board 2 or 3 inches in diameter.
Oil leaks from the engine head gaskets every eight months. Dealer contacted and did repairs. Problem still exisits. Also, car stalls while driving, due to a problem with the computer.
