Dodge Nitro owners have reported 134 problems related to tank assembly (under the gasoline fuel system category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Every time I fill up my Dodge Nitro fuel overflows from the tank in upwards to half a gallon. It seems to not matter whether I set the pump on low, high or fill up manually, fuel overflows from the nozzle of the tank, after pump has shut off). . . Once soaking my pants in gas. The issue has happened multiple times at multiple gas stations. This is an environmental problem, it's a personal danger, and a danger to others. I bought the vehicle used, and have no knowledge that this has been an issue prior to me purchasing, however, based on how many times it has happened to me I can most likely assume it was. When doing research on the issue I have discovered that I am not the only person having this exact problem. Seems as though jeeps and Dodges are having these issues. A recall needs to be enforced on this.

2008 Dodge Nitro fuel tank overflow problem. Pump would click and fueling would stop as normal, but gas would shoot out the side of the gas pump just past the handle at the rubber gasket before the nozzle. This was a consistent thing. Cars ahead of me at the pump would have no issues and it didn't matter which pump I went to the result was the same.
Gas tank overflows when filling tank. Auto shut off does not work. Gas tank needs to be replaced.

2007 Dodge Nitro, fuel spills out of tank when filling up vehiclle. Gasoline stations pump auto shutoff won't work with vehicle causing fuel to come splashing out when full. From investigation of other incidents from other owners, this is most likely caused by a valve in the gas tank that is there to prevent an explosion in the event of a rollover accident. The valve is defective, and thus the gas spills out, and your car could possibly explode in a rollover accident. I have read that this is a manufacturing defect, and that Chrysler knows about it and will not repair without charge unless under warranty.
Regardless of which station I use, gas overflows from my tank every time I refuel. In order to avoid this, I have to stop fueling because it never automatically shuts off. I've read blogs & talked to other Dodge Nitro and Jeep owners and they are experiencing the same problem. Not only is this damaging to the vehicle, it is unsafe to have gas spilling over at the stations and having gas on the exterior of the vehicle while driving.
When fueling the vehicle, the gas tank will spew gasoline out when the tank reaches capacity. This happens regardless of whether you are manually holding the pump or have it set with the little lock feature to automatically fill.
Fuel comes rushing out all over vehicle and all over persons filling the gas tank. This happens everytime it is filled up.
The gas tank valve inside the tank for safety is broken. With out this valve gas will be released in any accident. It also causes the gas tank to over fill when filling up.
The contact owns a 2007 Dodge Nitro. The contact stated that the gas filler neck did not detect when the gas tank was full, causing the gasoline to overflow onto the vehicle. The dealer was contacted, but was unable to assist the contact. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was unknown and the current mileage was 55,000. The VIN was unavailable.
When filling the vehicle up with gas the pump does not shut off. It has spewed gasoline all over me, the vehicle and the ground. It appears to be a problem with a valve in the gas tank. This is a safety concern. I hope they don't wait until someone is killed in a fire in order to fix the issue.
When I fill my gas tank, the gas will shoot out as the tank gets full. The pump will shut off, but the fuel continues to shoot out the tube and all over the side of the car and anyone standing there. This has happened multiple times and is a dangerous problem to have. I do not like being doused with fuel or having fuel spraying onto the ground and surroundings. The Jeep liberty had the same issue and it was recalled but for some reason, the Dodge Nitro has not been, which has the same tank.
2007 Dodge Nitro, slt, 3. 7 litre. Fuel tank overflows every time I fill my gas tank, does not matter if I use gas pump nozzle full open or barely open.
When filling up tank with gas, it always overflows. Gas comes rushing out.
When filling up the gas tank of my 2007 Dodge Nitro, when reaching full and the pump automatically turns off several cups of fuel come back out the filler location and spray over the side of the car, ground, pump, and anybody standing nearby. It has happened at several gas pumps and stations. Upon doing research on the internet it appears that it is a problem with the vent in the gas tank. This is a serious safety hazard, which could lead to both a fire at the gas station, and from what I have read a significant risk of explosion if involved in a rollover accident.
Gas overflow when filling. Reports of "rollover valve in tank not sealing" have been submitted to Dodge but no recall as of yet. "the fuel tank rollover valve can allow fuel to pass into the vapor canister resulting in the potential for fuel leakage. ".
The contact owns a 2007 Dodge Nitro 4x4. The contact stated while refueling the vehicle, the fuel would overflow and onto the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who advised that the failure could possibly be a rollover valve in the fuel tank that was faulty. The dealer advised that the rollover valve should be replaced because in the event that the vehicle did rollover, all of the gasoline would spill. There were no recalls for the failure and the vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was 30,000.
Hi I bought my 2007 Dodge Nitro in 2007, I have not had many issues a few minor ones no biggie. But recently the last year and a half my check engine light kept coming on then going away coming on then going away. It was getting me aggravated. Eeverytime I took it in to the dealer they said no everything is fine ok sure. Lately everytime I go to fill up my tank it has been overflowing. So I was really fed up I took it in and explained the situation to them (dealer) they informed me that it will need a new fuel tank and fill neck. Now I have done some research and aparantly im not the only Nitro owner going through this issue. I hear that the valve is defective and that it's a manufacturer defect and that chyrysler knows about it. Now bear in mind we have all been driving a car god forbid got into an accident and the car blows up because of that. I am not happy I will pursue this and my service better get covered thank god I got the extra warranty!!!! I suggest on eveybody's behalf that a recall is issued and if I pay the deuctable I want my money back!!!!.
When filling the gas tank, it does not automatically shut off. It spews gas everywhere, getting on me and the vehicle. This happens every time I fill up the vehicle. The problem has not been corrected.

Fuel spills out when gas tank becomes close to full. Half a gallon or so very strongly is sprayed all over the side of the vehicle and anything within a 1-2ft distance from the vehicle. This happens regardless of the gas station used.
Fuel burps out of my 2007 Dodge Nitro every time I fill up with fuel. This is due to a faulty valve in the tank that is designed to shut off fuel in the event of a roll over. Dodge is aware of this problem and needs to offer a recall. This is a dangerous and environmentally irresponsible problem.
2007 Dodge Nitro r/t overflow on gas tank spill quart of fuel on each fillup. I understand the tank has a faulty cutoff inside the tank which malfunctions. That means in the event of a roll over it will release fuel which increases probability of fire/deaths. Dodge is replacing tank on vehicles under warranty - they should replace all the defective tanks. Help.
Gas tank overflows every time I refuel 2008 Dodge Nitro r/t.
Gas comes spilling out when filling gas tank.
Gas spilling out of filler neck on my 2007 Dodge Nitro when it has finished filling. I placed the nozzle fully into the tank and click the automatic filler in place and once the nozzle clicks indicating it is full 1-2 cups of gas spills out and sprays everywhere on me, the ground, and the car creating a huge safety hazard. This has happened several times at numerous gas stations. I have found out recently that the Nitro, along with Jeep's liberty, is prone to this. There needs to be a recall on this issue and Dodge needs to take care of this immediately.
Gas hazard!!!! my 2007 Dodge Nitro spits gas back at you once it has finished filling. I placed the nozzle fully into the tank and click the automatic filler in place and once the nozzle clicks indicating it is full 1-2 cups of gas "burps" back up spraying everywhere on me, the ground, the car making a giant mess and huge safety hazard. This has happened numerous times at more than a couple different locations and I have found out recently that the Nitro is prone to this. There needs to be a recall on this issue and Dodge needs to take care of this immediately.
My 2007 Dodge Nitro spills gasoline every time I pump gas. The pump fails to shut off and gasoline spewes out of the fill tube onto the side of the vehicle, the pavement and on a couple of occasions my legs and shoes. This has occurred at many different gas stations and pumps and only started recently after the warranty expired. Internet research indicates that this problem is caused by a faulty vent valve inside the tank that must be replaced. In addition the faulty valve is designed to prevent explosions in case the vehicle rolls over. If this valve is faulty this is a serious safety issue for Nitro owners.
When fueling up my Dodge Nitro a couple weeks ago, an annoying problem began to surface. Rather than cutting off when full, the gas would overflow. This occured every time that I fueled up no matter where I was fueling. This is due to the malfunction of a valve in the gas tank. Upon researching, I have found that this is more than just an annoyance, and ruining the paint, but it is dangerous. If my vehicle were to be involved in a roll over accident the malfunction of this valve will cause the leakage of fuel and possible explosion of the vehicle. I also found out that in order to solve the problem, the entire gas tank needs to be replaced. I believe this to be a major safety issue and believe that Dodge should issue a recall on the part.
Within the last few weeks every time that I went to fill up my gas tank, gas would start pouring out of the gas tank. At first I thought it was the pump so I went to several other stations and every time, gas came out. The warranty for my truck just recently went up and I've made several calls to Chrysler to have them pay for this out of their pocket. It's something that is faulty with their gas tanks and I'm not the only one that is seeing an issue. Hopefully with your help a recall can be issued for this model and make Chrysler stand by their product regardless of warranty. Its a major safety issue that needs to be addressed immediately.
Everytime I go to fill up my gasoline tank of the 2008 Dodge Nitro I just purchased in Dec 2010 it overflows all over the side of my car. This is very upsetting and I see this as a major safety issue. In additon to that the finish of the Nitro is being ruined everytime I fill up. Now I have to put in 40 $'s of gas in each time to avoid overflowing the tank. This is obnoxious. Who in the world wants to stop at the gas station more frequently because of a gasoline tank malfunction? which I would have known before buying the thing!.
Fuel tank burps back after pump clicks off spilling approx. A quart of gas on the side of vehicle and the ground. 2007 Dodge Nitro 4x4.
Gas overflows when filling tank on my 2008 Dodge Nitro. I have heard this is most likely caused by a valve in the gas tank that is there to prevent an explosion in the event of a rollover. The valve is defective and thus, the gas spills out.
I own a 2007 Dodge Nitro with 47,000 miles that recently every time I fill up the gas tank, gas will spray out of the filler neck. It doesn't matter if the gas pump nozzle is being held or if you set it to fill automatically. As soon as the gas stops pumping, you can hear what sounds like a burping sound then about a cup full or more of gas comes spraying out of the filler neck. Have heard of other Nitro owners with the same problem having the gas tank replaced because of a stuck roll over valve. My vehicle has yet to be repaired. .
Upon fueling up my gas tank, the nozzle will click off and then about a half gallon of gas comes rushing off.
The contact owns a 2007 Dodge Nitro. The contact stated that gasoline would spill out of the fuel tank when the contact was refueling. The contact spoke with the dealer but the vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 45,000 and the current mileage was 59,000.
