Alternator/generator/regulator Problems of Dodge Ram 2500

Dodge Ram 2500 owners have reported 6 problems related to alternator/generator/regulator (under the electrical system category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2006 Dodge Ram 2500

Failure Date: 02/23/2019

Computer controled vehicle charging system caused the passenger side battery to over charge (dash gauge indicating overcharging) and swell causing irreparable damage and explosion of the battery. This could have started an engine fire under the hood. Fortunately it didn't. Vehicle was on main interstate highway when this occurred. I contacted the battery manufacturer thinking it was a bad battery, but the technician stated Dodge charging systems of this period wired the batteries in parallel incorrectly causing the aux battery to overcharge while the main battery was reading undercharged. "batteries in true parallel should be connected negative terminal to negative terminal and positive terminal to positive terminal. " the Dodge Ram 2500 24v cummins I own (completely stock) has the negative terminal cable from each battery connected directly to the engine block for ground. And not connected to each other at all. Again, a properly wired parallel battery system should have the negative terminal connected to each other. According to the battery manufacturer technician, this would become a problem with current flow between the two batteries and cause unbalanced charging due to the vehicle computer reading the main battery voltage only and signaling the alternator to charge at higher volts if the main is reading low. (which happens when the engine is started. . . Especially in cold weather). And once the main battery sensor signals the computer and the computer signals the alternator, the aux battery is charged even when it doesn't need it. And because the charge flow is restricted due to the negative cables incorrect wiring on the Dodge, the main battery only receives a small percentage of the charge. Thereby creating an continual overcharge to the aux battery until the main is slowly brought back up to full charge. Google: Dodge ram passenger battery boiled.

2 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 1998 Dodge Ram 2500

Failure Date: 10/15/2018

Hazzard: intermittent head lamp operation (low and/or high beam cut-off) cause: unknown. Safety issue: keeping the headlamps on while driving (Dodge ram 1998. 5 2500 4x4 quad cab slt; 5. 9l 24v cummins diesel; 47re; stock (no fog lights); 170,000 miles). Problem: headlamps (low and/or high beam), and occasionally, but not consistently the dashboard lights, cut-off intermittently -- actuating the dashboard mounted headlamp switch (push-pull) restores the lights. Trouble shooting/repairs (executed by a certified automotive repair facility): (1) checked multiple grounds (clean and tight); (2) checked fuses; (3) checked output from generator (steady - approx. 14. 5 with "no load"; batteries - new 6/18); (4) checked circuits (verified continuity and resistance); (5) replaced steering column mounted multifunction switch; (6) replaced "headlamp/security" relay; (7) replaced headlamp/dashboard lighting combination switch (replaced 22 months ago (167,000) - original failed. Note: dashboard above switch - warm to touch. (8) replaced headlamp bulbs (both). Note: no diagnostic trouble codes set. Next action: replacing the headlamp/dashboard combination switch again. Oem replacement switch installed at approximately 167,000 miles may be malfunctioning. A visual inspection of the switch did not indicate signs of overheating. Actuating the switch indicates normal operation. Speculation: a "ccd bus communication error" is occurring; pulse from pcm (?) to headlamp circuit may not yield the level of resistance required resulting in the intermittent "cut-off". Technical advice/guidance/assistance either directly from the manufacturer (fiat Chrysler automotive), or through the Dodge ram dealership network is required to correct this hazardous condition.

3 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2008 Dodge Ram 2500

Failure Date: 04/15/2017

The 08 Dodge ram was driving down the road when the fuse box under the hood caught fire causing the Dodge to loose all power. The vehicle was able to make it safelty to the side of the road thank goodness and get all its passengers out. The windows would not roll up nor would the engine start afterwards. This is the third time this has happened,. Both other two times it happened while driving and we paid $1000 to replace the fuse box. It happens once every year. Highway and interstate. My husband took the fuse box apart and you can see where it caught fire. I found the following link of others reporting the problem to the news which may be our problem. . Read more...

5 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 1997 Dodge Ram 2500

Failure Date: 04/20/2005

The outer dash silencer pad caught on fire and burned the clutch and fuel lines. It fried the computer, the occupants were almost killed. There was a recall issued #737, in August 1997. The customer was not notified of the recall. The consumer paid all repairs out of pocket. The manufacturer was notified, but the claim was denied. Chrysler will not help the consumer with the repair bills, tom kelly made a decision and the consumer was told that he does not communicate with people and his decision was final. The consumer had no problems with vehicle before the incident and was out of state when it happened. The consumer realized the recall was for Dodge trucks built March 7, 1997 through may 15, 1997 and the consumers vehicle was built on may 16, 1997. The alternator was inoperative due to a bad pcm which was replaced. The a/c had become inoperative after the pcm was replaced.
