Dodge Ram 2500 owners have reported 12 problems related to underhood wiring (under the electrical system category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
On the morning of 12/7/09 I started my truck to warm it up with the heating fan on high when at some point, somewhere in the wiring harness under the dash overheated and started the interior on fire. Destroying my vehicle. The windshield and driver door windows were broken from the heat but luckily remained intact and not letting air inside to fuel the fire and it eventually extinguished itself.

1999 Dodge 2500 ram dash cracking causing wiring problems.
I drive quite a bit during the night time with my vehicle. There seems to be a very serious issuse with the wiring over heating at the headlight switch. I have replaced 5 . . . Going to be 6 headlight switches. There is a dangerous amount of head being put out at the switch itself. So much that it actually melts the pigtail at the light switch connection. The light switch itself is destroyed. Its bad especcially when driving down the road and your headlamps, marker lights and dash light all go out. If I do not have a replacment part in my truck at the time, I have to find a spot in between switch position just to get my lights operational to "limp" my truck home. My choice of positions when the switch fails is headlamps with out markers and no dash lights or fog lamps markers and dash lights. Being Dodge has such terrible headlamps I use fog lights to drive when this happenes. Believe it or not he fog lights are better than the driving lights. I recently saw a recall for Dodge durangos with a under dash electrical problem. I would think that this wiring/headlamp switch problem should be a recall! thank you.
That morning I was leaving a job site and noticed my engine light came on. I called the Dodge dealer. Service tech stated that if it was not flashing to bring it in ASAP. Later that day while driving back to my house, without any warning the engine just shut off in the middle of the street. Luckily there was no traffic and I was able to coast to my house. The truck would not re-start. I called the dealer and Chrysler had a tow truck out. It was found that a wiring harness had come loose and had been rubbing, the harness damaged and a bare wire shored out, blew the coil and ruptured the fuel line! I was very lucky to not have caught fire or exploded. After repeated calls and emails, I have figured Chrysler does not care. I'll bet ther are quite a few 2003 Dodge Ram 2500 pickups out there. I would hope the rest could be warned before a death occurs!.

Third engine compartment fire on 1996 Dodge p/u w/ deisel engine. I reported to dot on 11-Jul-2000 after the second fire. See your reference no 865223. This makes three times the driver could not turn engine off, wiring harnesses overheated causing engine compartment fire.
Front coil spring broke, which caused front end to drop. There is a recall for this problem, but this vehicle is not included although it has the same problem. Also, occupant received a recall for the wiring harness which he never had repaired, and lost the recall notice. Manufacturer stated that this vehicle was not included in wiring harness recall. Also, 5th gear quit for the second time, first time covered under extended warranty, this time owner must pay for repair. Chrysler has issued an updated nut for this problem.
Accepted delivery of vehicle 8/7/99 from timothy Dodge. 1/20/00 serviced at timothy Dodge - mileage 6,834. Truck was pulling severelt to right when brakes applied. Brake drums, front calipers, rotor and pads replaced under warranty. This relieved pulling for approximately 1,800 miles. The pulling progressively developed anew. 5/12/00 serviced at timothy Dodge - mileage 12,122. Trailer harness problem repaired. Continued problem with brakes reported to dealer and a rep test drove vehicle. He advised vehicle was braking normally. Advised that brakes were a wear item and would not be covered under warranty after 12,000 miles. On 6/12/00 went to timothy Dodge for paint touch up and requested a rep to test drive vehicle again regarding the brakes pulling. Mileage at that time 13,956. Told problem could not be duplicated and that a brake job would cost $200. 00 or more. As parts were new, declined brake service at a charge. On 8/10/00 stopped at timothy Dodge requesting a service rep to test drive truck again for same pulling of brakes. Mileage 16,302. He drove truck in parking lot and advised there was no problem. Again declined a brake job at a cost of over $200. 00 as parts were still reletively new. On 10/30/00 vehicle serviced at timothy Dodge. Mileage 20,635. Problem with excessive play in steering and continued problem with brake pulling reported to dealer. They again said they could not duplicate the problem reported. No service performed. Again told brakes were a wear item no longer covered under warranty. On 11/20/00 vehicle serviced at timothy Dodge. Mileage 21,596. Continued problem with excessive play in steering and brake pulling becomming more severe. Steering gear box replced under warranty. Upon picking up vehicle, immedately noticed the steering binding and continued excessive play. Truck returned next day, and told I should consult another dealership. After doing so, still no redress to date.

Driving truck down the road, stopped at a stop light and noticed smoke coming from underneath the hood. Got out of truck, pulled hood up and noticed that the fire retarding pad was on fire. Truck had to be towed to a mechanic, has not determined was caused the fire.
Engine: experienced a fire under the hood. A mechanic stated that the fire took place because of the cheap material that is used for the firewall.
