Air Bag Problems of Ford Contour

Dashboard is delaminating and peeling upward interfering with air bag deployment, defrosters and visibility. Ford has ongoing issues with this same problem on other Ford products. I feel this is definitely a safety issue and quality issue.

The contact owned a 1996 Ford Contour. The contact stated that while driving at 25 mph, going downhill, the vehicle hit black ice, then crashed into a parked vehicle. The air bags deployed and detached upon impact, slicing the contact's head open, snapped his fifth and sixth vertebrae, and the seatbelt fractured his ribs. The police were called to the scene of the collision. The police officer informed the contact that the air bag had detached from the steering wheel and was in the rear passenger seat. A police report was filed. The contact was transported to the hospital for injuries sustained. The vehicle was towed to a tow yard and deemed totaled. The dealer and manufacturer were not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 120,000.

I was rear ended into another car on oct. 29 2002 and niether the air bag worked as well as the seatbelt did not lock. I had head, neck, and back injuries at that time. I did't question these things not working because I was not hit hard. Oct. 27,2003 I was involved in the exact same type of accident only this time I was hit hard from behind and hit the car infront of me hard. Again nothing worked and this time the police even questioned the air bag. Again I have injuries to my face, head, neck, shoulder, and back but to what extent I do not know yet. I was at a complete stop in both accidents and hit straight on in the rear. In 2002 I hit the car in front straight on and now in 2003 I hit the front can with the center to passenger side. My car is said to be totaled.

Several items first the dash bowed in from both sides,a month after picking the car up the air conditioner went out the dealership said my problem, the tires were bad we replaced them they are bad all the time have to be replaced more then a normal tire should , the car broke down last year on the highway again my problem the rotors and other things were bad somthing I as a consumer would not have known about , cannot get car inspected because the horn does not work and cannot be fixed due to airbag again my problem o yes was in a finder binder airbag did not work minor injries , the drivers seat rocks the rear seat belt will not work more problems this car is worth nothing I on;y drive to and from work in it and the way it is falling apart youd think I travel across country in it . . . This is not a good car to ever purchase will never buy from Ford again!!! srb this prblems have been on going from 2000-2003.

While driving at 50 mph, the consumer lost control of the vehicle and hit a concrete barrier. None of the airbags deployed which resulted in the driver being critically injured.

2000 Ford Contour, 4-door sedan, VIN: [xxx] ------ entire dashboard is coming unglued/disconnected. It is raising up in front of the windshield, this is starting to obstruct the driver's view, the defrost deflectors are no longer operable to deflect the air onto the windshield and it has compromised the possible operation of the passenger airbag. Ford motor company has issued numerous recalls about this serious Ford Contour problem. But, the local Ford dealership says that this vehicle is not on the recall list. Consumer received recall notice 99v243000. Dealership was refusing to install a new diagnostic monitor as described in recall corrective action. Please provide any additional information/attachments.

While another vehicle was backing out of a parking space, consumer attempted to use his horn, however it was inoperable, dealer stated the air bag assembly at the top of the steering column was the faulty part.

Consumer noticed that the place where the airbag is located has a split in it. Dealer can't seem to fix it so that it will not deploy over a period of time.

Consumer took vehicle to dealer for recall repairs. Dealer refused to fix airbag monitor.

The pcrv in the rear brakes may have failed per recall notice 00v-075 prior to recall notice causing consumer to loose control of the vehicle, the vehicle became airborn, jumped a ditch and landed on front bumper. No delpoyment of air bag occured during accident. Nlm.

Consumer experiencing some type of airbag failure but it's taking the dealership alot of time to find and repair the problem. Nlm.

This is not an aesthetic complaint as classified by Ford motor corporation. Dashboard is peeling up from base of windshield and obstructing drivers view, defrost panel is now dislodged from dashboard and creating additional obstruction of driver's view and rendered non functional. The recession of the dashboard is now separating from the air bag deployment section of the dash. I purchased this vehicle new and have been the sole owner since its purchase in July 1999 and have been refused assistance. I contacted first the Ford dealership from which I purchased the vehicle and was told there was in fact a recall on this item and had since expired and was directed to call Ford motor corporation directly for further assistance. I was not notified of the recall. The three customer service representatives that I have spoken to over the past 24-30 months each confirmed the recall and noted 1) since it was classified as an aesthetic problem it had an expiration date attached it and 2) it was sent to the dealerships to expedite on vehicles that came in for scheduled maintenance visits. Again, I was not notified from either the dealership at the time of my service visits or Ford motor corporation when the recall was initiated. I have requested second opinions from outside sources that are Ford certified in body repair and each noted the ramifications of driving this vehicle without the manufacturer defect corrected is and not limited to a spontaneous deployment of the air bag and a result of a potentially fatal accident for the driver, passengers, and not excluding other drivers on the road that could inadvertently be involved. In my research of this situation I have found complaints of this nature with similar responses since 2001.

My son was involved in a traffic accident where the car rolled over and hit numerous trees. Both air bags did not open and the seat belt broke away. . . Miracously my son ended up in the back seat with only a modest bump on his head. . . . . Witnessess as well as the towing/wrecking yard could not believe there were no serious injuries, especially considering the condition of the vehicle. . . When purchasing the auto I recall that safety reports were generally favorable. . . Given the impact of this accident it is incredible that the airbags did not open and that the seat belt broke away. . .

While traveling down interstate 295,new jersey, I slowed down to get off at exit 4, suddenly I heard a loud explosion (which I thought was my car exploding) and the next thing I knew both air bags exploded (passenger & drivers side). The force and power of the explosion caused my windshield to crack on the passenger. I did not hit any other car or object,I was traveling no more than about 35,because I was preparing to get off at exit,and the road surface was smooth. Car was towed to the dealer,murphy Ford,chester,PA, who offered little or no assistance in determining the exact cause of why two air bags would explode other than to tell me I had too much air in one tire. Ford motor company was contacted and I have yet to hear from them.

When driving at any speed the vehicle vibrates and the vehicle cuts off without giving any prior warning. Also, when applying brakes they are hard and foot goes all the way to the floor. Consumer took the vehicle in for repairs three times, and the dealer had to replaced the air bag due to the fact that thiere wasn't any air in the air bag.

Air bag did not inflate in accident.

Violent deployment of airbags, causing injury to head, neck and face.

Have had 5 recalls since buying the car. Also, have had to have the water pump changed. The problem is trying to get the recalls done. I had taken the car in previously only to be told they didn't have the parts and had to reschedule. The last two recalls I stressed the importance of getting these done when schedule. The air bag and the brakes were the last two. I scheduled them finally in April this year. On Saturday afternoon I went to pick up my car only to be told they did not have the parts. I expressed again how hard it was for me to come in because I work 5-6 days a week. Again I rescheduled for July. I called and made an appointment verified the parts were there. I brought the car in. Again late Saturday afternoon went to pick up the car only to be told again they did not have parts. It seems to be these recalls are not that important. I also asked why my brakes scrubbed when I stopped, they comment was we couldn't get it too. My point is it I do not believe the Ford place cares one way or the other what happens to me or my car.

While driving a noise is heard. There is a problem with the clock spring. Crown Ford dealership in nashville tennessee stated no problem could be found.

Consumer received recall 99v243000. Contacted the dealer, no parts available to correct the problem. Please give any further details.

Consumer contacted the dealer in reference to four seperate NHTSA recall notices 99v243000/ 99v194000/ 99v103000 and 98v233000. Also, manufacturer's recalls 99s23/99s19/99s14 and 98s26. Dealer refused to correct the recall problems without the consumer correcting the problem with transmission . Please provide any further details.
