Front Air Bag Problems of Ford Contour

I was driving a 1997 Ford Contour. This was the car I drove to and from work. I was driving to longview community college(lvcc) for a rehearsal and lesson on the bruce watkins drive (highway 71) south. The traffic was heavy as there was an accident at the grandview triangle. I was in the middle lane just at the 87th street exit. A vehicle cut in front of me to exit at this turn off. I was slowed to about 35 mph and was driving across a bridge. At the end of that bridge was a huge bump. As I hit that bump, the air bag exploded. I could not see with the powder, smoke and the smell ( which was burning my eyes. ) I ran into the back of a trail blazer. The trailer hitch rammed through the radiator. The driver did not know that I even had hit him. 60 seconds after the accident, a police captain detective on her way home from the metropolitan police station, asked me if I was ok. She said, "I saw the air bag deploy before you hit that car in front of you. " the noise of the horn was loud. The front windshield was broken by the hood, which was bent back like a banana. All of the glass in the front was all broken. I was checked out by the mast ambulance. The car was loaded on a truck and pulled onto the property of dick smith Ford in raytown, mo. I called my agent with state farm insurance, and he got me in touch with their underwriters after the car was written off as being a total wreck. I had informed him what happened. The underwriters said, "they would have to pick and chose their battles with a big company like Ford. " I also called Ford in michigan and informed them about this situation. I have found on the internet 13 other examples of this kind of accident. I did not receive a ticket or any notice of wrongful driving. I did go to my doctor for several adjustments on my neck and back.

Contact states while driving both air bags deployed without an impact. Vehicle was towed to a towing yard. The service dealer and the manufacturer have been informed that the air bags deployed without an impact.

While driving 35 mph front air bags inadvertently deployed. Vehicle was drivable. Dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem.

Car is leased to me and the dashboard is puckering near the airbag. When I turn on the heat the airbag pops like it's going to pop out. I was told there was a recall on them , because the dashboards do pucker, but I didn't receive the recall note the previous people who leased/ owned this car received the note.

Jan 2004, my son was driving my 1999 Ford Contour. He was involved in a roll over accident at a speed of approximately 70 mph. The vehicle rolled 1. 5 times and never once did either of the air bags open.

While sitting at a stop sign another vehicle rear ended the consumer's vehicle. In return, the consumer's vehicle rear ended a bus. Upon impact, none of the airbags deployed.

The air bags were inoperative.

Air bags deployed while vehicle was parked. .

When making a turn at about 5-10 mph, another vehicle hit consumer's vehicle head on, causing vehicle to start spinning on the street. Upon impact, none of the air bags deployed. Air bags deployed after impact, while spinning, five people were injured.

When slamming on his brakes to avoid hitting vehicle that had stopped in front, and air bags didn't deploy. Consumer and friend were injured.

While driving about 20 mph next to a close curve saw a deer in front of vehicle on road. Tried to avoid hitting it by stepping on brakes. They locked up, and vehicle rolled over. None of front air bags deployed.

While approaching a stop sign both airbags deployed. There was no accident involved. My daughter and her friend were slightly injured. My daughter still suffers neck and back aches. No explanation as to why this happened.

Consumer was driving 45mph and driver's airbag went off in his face.

Consumer was traveling on a bridge and a suddently stopped for another vehicle that jumped in front of him. Dual airbag didn't go off, and hit vehicle from behind. Dealership was aware of problem.

Consumer had a head-on collison, and the air bags came out with such a force that it knocked off cap on driver's head and his glasses. Consumer received recall notice 3 months after the recall was issued. Recall 99v243000.

Brakes failed and replaced within the first month, after repair accident occurred due to lack of braking ability, during collision no deployment of the air bag and the seat belt came loose.

Driver's and passenger's airbags deployed but busted open, causing the fumes and smoke to enter into the vehicle. Please provide further information.

Going approx 30mph & swerved to avoid hitting a cat. Left front wheel hit curb & both air bagss popped out & quickly deflated. Broke windshield. Was able to stuff air bags back in. Will be taking vehicle to dealer to check & correct air bags.

Smells like raw gas all the time. Had the vehicle at the dealer was not able to find the problem. Two weeks ago vehicle went to the shop for a fuel pump. On highway while trying to pull over to the shoulder, something had popped out and started smoking under the hood, hit the concrete and both airbags came out.

Consumer was driving down street when both air bags deployed, driver was injured, burned. Resulted in accident.

Vehicle collided with a light pole with enough force to break the lamp from the pole, however the air bag did not deply and the driver sustained a broken nose.

Consumer states that while travling about 25 mph, and had a very light impact in which vehicle skidded about 3 feet into the back of another vehicle. The vehicle in front didn't have any rear brake lights. The airbag deployed on very light impact, causing it to smash the windshield on the passenger's side. It also split the instrument panel/damaged glove compartment/bent the steering wheel, resulting in extreme injuries to the neck and chest. Also punctured the airbag in 2 places. Consumer has contacted the dealer.

The air bag came out due to the accident, but did not inflate, caused the driver to hit the windshield of the car and sustaining injuries.

Lug nuts were loose, causing wheel to fall off while driving, resulting in loss of control/accident, also no deployment of driver's airb ag upon impact. Driver sustained injuries.

Upon frontal collision, driver made contact w/steering wheel before air bag deployed. Please describe details. Tt.

Consumer states air bag moudle shorted out.

Driver's and passenger's air bags deployed in a very minor collision, causing the occupant to sustain injuries. Please give any further details.
