We had this vehicle for 3 yrs and during those years we have come across a number of problems with it. After the first few months of purchase the vehicle was unable to shift into the proper gear, it would get stuck on park and we were unable a drive it a number of times. We then problems with the tires in which one of the front tire split , we then replace all four. We then had problems with the heater and front lights. After seeing all the negative reports others have given on this particurlar vehicle online we feel this is a very unsafe vehicle to drive. We have major concerns as to whether we should even put this vehicle on the road without having an investigation done. We took the vehicle to the dealer and we couldn't believe their attitude, they showed no concern to our problem and proceeded to give us a quote for 2200. To get a new transmission. When we asked if there were any recalls on this vehicle they stated no. We then saw a recall on the transmission online, so we contacted Ford customer svc in which they then said that our VIN number wasn't included on this recall. We explained that we were having the same problems this recall stated. They in turn called the manager at crowell's who stated that he didn't offer any discount because of our attitudes. He then offer to charge 495. For a new transmission plus 200. For any service charge, also a 28. Per day rental. When we asked why he lowered his price so drastically they stated that if the work was over 2200. That was the amount of the discount(1500. ) however, she also stated that if our vehicle was over 75,000 miles it did not apply to us. So we are left with no vehicle to drive no way of paying this amount of money and to our surprise a vehicle with so many recalls it shouldn't to be allow on the road. I feel we should get our money back being that this vehicle is too unsafe for my family to be in.

My transmission went out on my 1996 Ford countour (66000+ miles). I was told that my transmission went to high line pressure and blew a piston drum in the transmission. The transmission in my car is a cd4e which is also found in madza cars. The cd4e transmission is known for it many problems releated to going to high line pressure and blowing the piston drums in its' earlier designs between (1994 - 1998). Why aren't these defective transmissions recalled for correction.
I mentioned to the dealership where I purchased my car that when I test drove it, it just seemed to jerk when it would shift. Ken schuck assured me that there was not anything wrong with the car. It did come with a wpc assoc. Limited warranty though if anything would happen it would be covered. Well, my car continued to automatically shift hard and I was allowed to take it to aamco in wmspt. Pa. This was a month ago. They looked at it and said there was nothing wrong with my car. I continued to drive it up until 4 weeks ago and on my way to work "the transmission went. " I contacted ken and told him what happened and he said to call the warranty CO. And take it to a dealership. Which I did and 4 weeks to this day, they still have it and it's still not repaired! that's at farfield Ford PA. 570-368-8121. So, between ken, wpc warranty and farfield, I'm not getting my car fixed. Please help me. I know there is recall work that needs done also. Please help me.

Consumer has had numerous problems with the 1996 Ford Contour. There has been so many recalls on consumer's vehicle that she wasn't aware of because the manufacturer never sent notices. Since then consumer has been paying for entire full price and is asking for reimbursement. However, the biggest problem with the vehicle is the gas fumes which is leaking therefore leaving poisonous carbon monoxide fumes coming in through the heater vents. This is the second cd4e transmission we have had that failed at approximately the same mileage. The first was a 1995 Mazda 626, serial# 11yvge22c6s5374843. In both cases the transmission had a complete failure due to an inadequate supply of transmission oil caused by the computer system's failure to maintain an adequate supply of transmission oil to the system. Bothe Ford and Mazda were contacted by phone about the problems and both companies stated that they stand by their warranty and would not provide any assistance with repairs, due to the fact that the car's warranty had expired and we did not purchase any extended warranty. If just seems odd that two cars with the same transmission should, with approximately the same mileage, suddenly require a new transmission. I admit that I put more than the average miles on a car in a given year, however the miles are mainly highway/interstate miles at a cruising speed, generally with the cruise control on, a manner of driving that does not cause the transmission to have to shift as in stop and go traffic. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).
This is our second car with this model overdrive transmission (cd4e) that has failed at approximately the same mileage, the first was a 1995 Mazda 626 VIN# [xxx]. The majority of the driving miles on both vehicles were considered highway miles at a cruising seed of 55mph or greater, generally with the cruise control on. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

After noticing a whining sound at approximately 30 mph in second gear and an increase in vibration when the air conditioner was on, the transmission was rebuilt on 10/10/98, on 8/3/2000 the transmission was replaced because of sudden and violent slipping, on 8/28/00 check engine light came on because oxygen sensor had been disconnected while transmission was replaced, sensor reconnected/replaced. Gears are not shifting properly, and there is a delay when trying to shift.
