Nhtsa website confirms 79 similar complaints of Ford's known manufacture defects in dashboard assembly is a safety hazard that compromises the occupant/pedestrian saftey: warped dash panel and sprung out front defrost grill obstructs driver's view; loose grill strikes windshield while car in motion and could break it; deflects proper airbag deployment; proper airflow of defrost is deflected; Ford knowingly manufactures and sells defective vehicles. Then immediately issues a "customer satisfaction program" notice (in this case cps # 01b78) that has an expiration date designed to preempt manifestation of the defects by the customer. On my 1999 Ford Contour se, the defroster grill has sprung out and juts out of alignment so that the airflow from defrost mechanism is obstructed. Dashboard warped and separated from windshield on the driver's side with the fissure spreading toward the passenger side. Ford customer service declined to do repairs/replacement at no charge, stating Ford is no longer liable because the customer service program expired August 2002. Instead, the Ford dealer service department offered me the loyal customer service deal of making the repair for cost of only $1638. 12. I purchased the vehicle new in February 1999 for $18077. 16 (financed price of $24318. 40)!!! my car loan has been paid in full February 2004 with no late payments. My vehicle's routine maintenance was done by the Ford dealer's service department. I am a second time Ford owner; my previous vehicle was a 1992 Ford tempo. However, lord willing, the 1999 Contour will be my last. These are just some of the additional expenses I incurred seldom used a/c repair $275 faulty engine light 02 sensors replace $500 dealer cut brake roters too low $800.

The brake rotors on the rear were replaced 5 times within a 6 month period. The heater blower malfunctioned and would not blow hot air. The vehicle was taken to an independent repair shop were the sensor to the heater blower was replaced.

Replacement brake rotors was only three weeks old. Rotors separated, did not retreive broken item from repair shop.
Rotors have warped, and consumer had them replaced several thousand miles later. New rotors also warped. Contacted dealer, and the dealer was not willing to do anything. The origional rotors warped due to excessive heat build up and was replaced, but the problem occurred again.
While driving would step on t brakes pedal and brakes will vibrate. Front rotors had to be replaced, and deffect is still there.
While driving at about 5mph and making a right turn right front wheel came off due to loose lugs: nuts. Dealer has seen vehicle. Consumer states the vehicle has experienced problems with the following: fuel filter, spark plugs, transmission, cv boot, brakes, air filter, wire, rotors need turning, timing gear, timing belt, and vehicle will not start.
I believe all 1997 Ford Contours should be recalled, over the past 3 years I have replaced the clutch, waterpump, blower motor, both lower control arms, bushings, sway bars, wheel bearings, front & rear brakes and rotors(both twice!!!!), axle, 2 oxygen sensors, catalytic converter, egr valve, coil springs, battery, balljoints, door latch, almost all of the full front suspension!!!! there are more parts that I had replaced but I can't remember all the names of the parts there are too many!! my check engine light will not turn off, seat belt light will not turn off, short in the drivers side power window, the engine will (rev) up by itself when it's in gear and when it's not, short in the drivers side power seats, water leakage in the trunk, a/c leaks onto the passenger side floor, all doors squeak no matter what you do, carpet is falling out, horn will not work most of the time, same for the cruise control, windshield wiper sprayer does not work, knocking noise coming from the engine, ended up in very bad debt because of this and no one will take it, I still owe money on the piece of crap. Contacted Ford motor at one time regarding all the parts I replaced after the first year I had it, they say it's not there problem. Dealership who sold it to me says it was just fine, bull crap!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I believe that those are too many items for a 1997 to go wrong on.

While driving consumer would feel brakes rubbing and grinding. Took vehicle to dealer, and they turned the rotors. But, problem has reoccurred.
I have had car in shop 4 different times, they changed to rotors and brakes the first time at 3,000 miles. They claim the rotors were warped from the factory. The next 2 times they claim the car is fine, the last time ( car is still in the shop since 2/15/00 this is written to you 3-09-00) they are replacing the front rotors and brakes again, they say they are replacing the defrost switch and a wiring harness, the engine drivetrain they don't know???. I have lost time at work and I don't fell safe in the car. I refuse to take my "family" anywhere in this car!!!!!.
While traveling at slower speeds driver heard a 'rubbing' sound, consequently had rotors turned and then replaced.
When brakes are applied over 30mph there is severe vibration in the front of the car. Contacted dealer , and they replaced wheels, and turned the rotors and drums in the rear. Car has been repaired 7 times for this problem.
Front rotors failed. Nlm.
This is the third time since I bought the car that the rotors had warped, it causes the sterring wheel to vibrate voilently on the freeway. I have freind that have the same problem with the same car.
Front brake rotors had to be replaced. Not covered by warranty. Problem siince purchase.
Consumer heard a squeaking and grinding noise coming from brakes. Took vehicle to dealer, and they said rotors needed to be changed, and 60% braking power was left on rear. Consumer had brakes changed at 26,212 miles, and at another 25,00 miles they need to be changed again.
Hi, we have had so many problems I can't believe that Ford dosen't recall the 97 Contours. We only had the car 1 month and the e. G. R valve to the exhaust manifold was replaced. The p. C. Valve has been serviced 4 times. The egr pressure feedback /back pressure was replaced. The rotor on the brakes was cracked and had to be replaced. We have had the car in the shop a total of 58 days. We took the car in 5 times telling them about this burning odor coming from the a/c vents. Recall about wire harness. They said could not verify concern. Untill my husband took it for the 4 time when the car was full of this foggy smoke. He made a service advisior come out and look at the car full of smoke. For three months 10-9-99 untill present . We have had to endure headaches vomiting and loss of our voices because they said they could not verify concern. We now have pictures of neglect of the safety of my husband and 5 children. The burned melted parts they should have replaced back on 10-9-99 it took untill 1-22-00 and as of right now 2- 10-00 another dealership has had the car for 7 day's. Major defects with the 97 Contour. We think they sold all there cng cars to people and didn't tell them. I know they sure didn't tell us. 3 times on the oil change paper they mention about the selenoid. You don't have that done with a oil change. Maybe you guy's can check into it? why else would owners of just the 97 Contours have so many problems? check your t s b pages. Please let us know what we can do we can't trust anyone to fix it right when we were told by Ford service people they couldn't find the problem. Something is really wrong with all of these cars.
The front end of vehicle shakes and rattles when slowing down. . The smell of burning wires are present when ac and heaters are utilized. Very dangerous if you live in cold climate area. Could cause injury or even death during winter months. Ford should do a safety recall on all engine, internal wiring harness, and fix rotors.
The left front axle broke while I was driving the car and it punctured my tire and damaged the rim of it. The mechanic says it was just worn out even though the car is only 3 years old. The check engine light stays on all the time, and there is nothing wrong. The engine rumbles when it idles. The brakes grind all the time, and I have replaced the left rotor 3 times in less than a year. The carpet comes out from under the rear seats an the passenger's side.
Ongoing problem with brake rotors continuing to warp. Needed replacement every 5000-10000 miles. This problem causes vehicle to virbrate when brakes are applied. Dealer notified. Please provide further details.
When driving at any speed and applying the brakes there is a grinding noise coming from the brakes, and the brake rotors had to be replaced.
Vehicle pulsates when brakes are applied due to warped rotors.
When the brakes are applied they grind, causing the vehicle to vibrate. The dealer has replaced the brake rotors.
Have had 5 recalls since buying the car. Also, have had to have the water pump changed. The problem is trying to get the recalls done. I had taken the car in previously only to be told they didn't have the parts and had to reschedule. The last two recalls I stressed the importance of getting these done when schedule. The air bag and the brakes were the last two. I scheduled them finally in April this year. On Saturday afternoon I went to pick up my car only to be told they did not have the parts. I expressed again how hard it was for me to come in because I work 5-6 days a week. Again I rescheduled for July. I called and made an appointment verified the parts were there. I brought the car in. Again late Saturday afternoon went to pick up the car only to be told again they did not have parts. It seems to be these recalls are not that important. I also asked why my brakes scrubbed when I stopped, they comment was we couldn't get it too. My point is it I do not believe the Ford place cares one way or the other what happens to me or my car.
Front rotors were replaced, 6000 miles later they needed replaced again, both times the repairs were covered under warranty, however 11000 miles later they failed again and consumer had to pay for repairs, consumer feels she should not have had to pay for the repairs.
Vehicle has a crack in transmission housing. Consumer states while mechanic was performing routine maintenance he observed a crack in the bottome of the transmission housing, since no transmission work has ever been performed under consumer's ownership roughly since 41,000 miles in the mechanic's opinion that either the transmission housing was cracked when installed or another transmission was put in resulting in a cracked housing, he also observed what might be bad front coil springs, they are making a rubbing nosie on an uneven surface or in a sharp turn to the right, consumer has contacted manufacturer they have called her consumer back but they have turned the complaint into a feedback report consumer has also had rotors turned and serviced twice.
When the brakes are applied vehicle vibrates. Dealer has replaced the rotors.
Rotors are warped. The dealer has replaced three sets of rotors. Manufacturer has been notified.
