My 2000 Ford Contour se starting acting like there was no gas at around 1/4 tank. This continued every time my car got to 1/4 tank. Mechanic replaced fuel filter $54. 90 for filter and diagnostic on 3/13/07. It still stuttering, hesitated and now was stalling. Mechanic replaced fuel pump $297. 22 on 3/28/07. The problem persisted and now it was happening at 1/2 tank. Once summer hit, it was worse with the a/c. Between March and June 2007, mechanic replaced pump once and filter twice. On 6/27/07, car stalled and would not restart, tank was at 1/2. Mechanic replaced intake manifold runner control unit and the problem remained. The problem continued with hesitating and stalling especially uphill. On 8/21/07 replaced all the spark plugs and wires $234. 90. The problem continued. My mechanic is at his wits end. The code on the check engine light is always the same. On 10/26/07, took the car back to my mechanic who had to replace the intake manifold runner control unit again. Decided to take my car to a different mechanic due to my current one not finding the problem. Replaced 2 oxygen sensors this week (11/7 and 11/9) one upstream and one downstream. The check engine light has come back on once again. If this is an intake manifold runner control unit problem then everyone that has had fuel pumps replaced will have to have them replaced again. This is not enjoyable since I drive 40 miles a day to work and halfway there I have to pull over and wait for the car to idle down before I can drive again or it will stall. This is not safe as this happens while people are driving and for no reason the car stalls in mid drive. Someone will get hurt and then there will be a recall. There were no events leading up to the failure except for taking my car for inspection which it passed. Two days later my car starts stalling and losing power. In 9 months I have spent close to $1000 to try and fix a problem that still is not fixed.

For the past year I have not been able to drive my 2000 Ford Contour se when the gas tank gets below 1/2 tank. I t begins sputtering and stalling below that. It dies out entire. Ly at 1/4 tank. I thought it was water in the fuel at first. And kept my tank filled and utilized a "heet" type product. It begame appearant during the spring and summer that the issue was not water icing up in the fuel.
As soon as I exited the freeway (almost a full circle exit), my car started choking and finally stopped. No fuel seemed to be reaching the engine. I had aaa tow it home since I was close to home. The engine cranked but wouldn't start. This choking happened once before when I entered the freeway on a similar full-circle ramp, and then stepped on the gas to pickup speed. It coughed a bit but then ran fine. Seems like the spin causes something to choke. Other Contour owners have experienced this before. It supposedly happens when the fuel is less than a quarter of the tank. Ford had recalled the Ford focus for fuel delivery system problems and my car exhibits the exact same symptoms. When I talked to Ford customer service, they asked me to take it to a dealer, have it fixed at my expense and then they would consider re-imbursing the expenses, but they also said that I shouldn't count on a reimbursement. I explained to them that this could be very dangerous since it can happen while entering a freeway. . Read more...

How many recalls must there be before lemon law applies? no safety defect listed .
When refueling vehicle pump will cut off numerous times and fuel will spill. This has gotten worse over the last 2 years. Vehicle was taken to dealer at 96000 miles, consumer was informed of extention of warranty on fuel pipe. Part was on backorder until vehicle was over 100000 miles. Now Ford refuses to honor warranty.
Fuel smell in the passenger cabin, makes no difference whether the tank is empty or full and detectable at slow, fast, or non speed.

Fuel filler opening does not provide vent when adding gasoline. Nozzle shuts off repeatedly when attempting to add gas. While attempting to investigate, finger became lodged in fuel filler opening flap (it has a small opening near the base, where it attaches to the pipe), fire rescue personnel needed to cut out fuel tank filler pipe to extract my finger.
