When driving on the interstate at 75 mph the exterior lights as well as the dash lights shut off. They then came back on after about a minute and a half. The lights intermittently shut off and come back on at random. I can be on the interstate or on a city street. I can be going forward or backwards when this happens. This is a huge safety issue.

43 Exterior Lighting problem of the 2005 Ford Crown Victoria

Failure Date: 09/04/2013

Lights failed when driving down dark freeway, nearly drove off road, stopped car, heard click and lights came back on, but a few minutes later, went off again. As I drive down the road I hear a click and then they come back on, but more minutes they go off again, continual intermittent on/off. This occurs when the lights are in headlamp setting, or autolamp control, lights don't work when in this condition in high beams. Fortunately they are working when held toward steering wheel in flash-to-pass, so have been holding the lights on this way for months. From what I've read, this is an ongoing continual problem with this vehicle. I'm surprised there have been no reports of accidents or death, but it's a hard issue to identify as it's inconsistent, and if someone was reported as 'loosing control of their vehicle', it could be loss of lights causing them to run off the road. Read how to do a quick resolution by kicking the lcm under the dash, which sometimes does cause the lights to come back on. Also, have seen a youtube video from a mechanic that shows how to solder on new relays to the computer panel, which fixes the issue for $15. 00, which I've considered doing myself as a replacement unit is upwards of $400. 00. This needs to be a recall issue!!!.

51 Exterior Lighting problem of the 2004 Ford Crown Victoria

Failure Date: 07/22/2012

Head lights went out while driving. Stopped, pulled over, didn't want to drive at night without lights. Checked all fuses, all seemed to be ok. Fumbled with the switch and wires and connections, and for awhile contemplated how we would get ourselves, and the car home without any lights? started the car back up and the lights worked. . . . . Resumed our drive home. . . . But lights went out again. . . . . Decided to risk it and continued home without head lights. Took the car to a Ford service station the next week, they said it must be the switch, put in a new switch and said it was fixed. . . . . . . . . Picked it up after work, and headed for home, made it a 1/4 mile before they went out again. Got on the internet and discovered that this is apparently a very common problem with the crown victoria and to fix it, it takes a Ford re-- designed lighting control module. . . To the tune of about $500. 00. . . Ford obviously knows this is a design and safety problem, why aren't they taking care of the problem. . . . . Before people are killed????.

59 Exterior Lighting problem of the 2005 Ford Crown Victoria

Failure Date: 04/30/2010

Headlamps occasional failed to turn on or would go off periodically at first. A month later the problem had become the norm rather than the exception. When the headlamps went out I had to drive with my hand engaging the high beam in order to have driving lights. Flicking the hi/lo beam wand would not turn the lights back on. Interior dash lights worked normally. It got to the point in a 5 mile trip, at night, my driving lights were off more than they were on without me having to engage the high beam lamps for driving. Extremely congested areas that I drive in so the engaging the high beams all the time caused a safety hazard not only for on coming drivers but for me as well. It is extremely hard to drive a full size car like mine while keeping the high beams engaged. The integrated control module (icm) had to be replaced to fix the problem. This is hard to believe given the fact that my car had less than 42,000 miles on it at the time. The car had not been involved in any damage causing wrecks. From all the forums that there are online, does not appear to be an isolated occurrence.
