11 Engine Stall problem

Failure Date: 05/19/2003

My 2001 Ford Escape's engine has stalled numerous times over the past 3 months. The engine will stall when put in to drive, reverse, while idling or when stepping on the accelerator. This problem started when the car was under 2 years old. The Ford dealership I brought it to has tried 4 times to repair the vehicle with no success. They have replaced various parts; sensors, valves, etc. They also expressed to me that they do not know how to rectify this problem. I have 11 more months on my lease and have requested a replacement car under the lemon law, which they told me I do not quailify for because I have over 18,000 miles on the car. Obviously, the car is dangerous and unsafe to drive.

16 Engine Stall problem

Failure Date: 08/07/2002

The engine has stalled three times over the last month. All at low speeds, usually turning into a driveway or parking lot. I see that you have opened a case on this (pe01-043). Just wondering if you have any additional information on this problem so that when I take it to the dealor, I can make sure that they know what the problem is and get it fixed. I am just afraid that I am going to walk into the dealor and they are going to look at me like I have 4 heads when I tell them of the problem. Reading on the internet, I see that alot of people are having this problem and it does not seem like Ford has any idea what is causing it. I am getting worried that this is going to start happening at higher speeds or in instances where it would be more dangerous. It also seems that many people are going back a 2nd and 3rd time becuase they are not getting the problem fixed the first time. I am worried that I will take it in a couple of times and then the problem reoccurs after my warrany has ended. What is my recourse then? any information that you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. 10-25-02:consumer called back in to advised had vehicle serviced at a Ford dlrship in reference to TSB 2-11-06. Vehicle was repaired. 2 weeks later vehicle stalled again.

18 Engine Stall problem

Failure Date: 07/18/2002

Repeated problem. There have been 5 occurrences. It has been to the dealership 3 times. On each of these occurrences, the engine has stalled for no apparent reason causing loss of power braking and power steering. Most instances occurred while driving down a slight decline at approximately 40-45mph. On all three dealer assessments (two different dealerships), the problem could not be reproduced. The first time the base idle was adjusted. The second time a relay was replaced. The third time Ford corporate directed the dealership to install an idle air control. I expressed safetly concerns about loss of power steering and brakes to the dealership. But, since they were never able to reproduce the problem, they don't consider it a concern. There is still a great safety concern here.

19 Engine Stall problem

Failure Date: 03/30/2002

When the vehicle is going 35-45mph under slight deceleration engine stalls out with no warning or hestitation of any kind. Vehicle immdediately restarts, but problem is sporadic. Dealer notified. Please add more information.

23 Engine Stall problem

Failure Date: 11/26/2001

Engine stalled losing all power while driving down road. This has occurred 4 times. Vehicle has been worked on by dealer to attempt to solve this problem all 4 times. Car must be pulled off of road (if possible) and restarted. The last time this occurred the car could not be pulled off of road and completely stopped on road. This is a very dangerous situation and someone is going to be hurt or killed if Ford cannot correct this problem.

24 Engine Stall problem

Failure Date: 11/02/2001

The engine on my Ford Escape stalled while accelerating on the on-ramp to enter a highway, going approximately 60 mph. I have now discovered this is a common problem with Ford Escapes, and hope the manufacturer will take steps to correct it. It can be a very dangerous situation.

25 Engine Stall problem

Failure Date: 10/22/2001

Engine stalled while driving around 35-40mph, avoiding rear-ending cars in front by evasively pulling off to side of road. Vehicle has stalled before and was taken into dealer. Dealer replaced fuel pump and ecm module relays at that time (2-3 months ago). However, vehicle stalled again tonight.

26 Engine Stall problem

Failure Date: 10/04/2001

Engine stalls while traveling. Occurred once each in June, July, sept and oct. Presumed electrical short. Coast to roadside, come to complete stop, put in park, turn key and take off again. 30 Engine Stall problem

Failure Date: 08/22/2001

Engine stalled while going downhill, power brakes and steering went out so very hard to control on an incline. Seems to be a common problem with the exact same situations with this vehicle.

31 Engine Stall problem

Failure Date: 08/13/2001

Stalls occurred in traffic at 30 to 35 mph on decline while braking; engine stalled resulting in loss of power steering and power brakes. Managed to turn steering wheel with difficulty to coast off two lane highway to shoulder. Turned off ignition and waited 2-3 minutes. Restarted vehicle without problem and returned to dealer for servicing. I am afraid to drive vehicle since there is no warning of stall which has occurred in traffic where rear-ending by following vehicle could have occurred. Believe computer is defective and should be replaced on 2001 and 2002 Escapes. Dt.

32 Engine Stall problem

Failure Date: 06/15/2001

While driving, engine stalled and oil light illuminated, consumer checked oil level and it was at the normal level.

33 Engine Stall problem

Failure Date: 05/04/2001

Without warning the engine stalls going about 35 mph. All steering and braking became impossible. After car was pulled to side of the road, an attempt to start was made and it seemed normal. This happened at about 450 miles after purchase. Car taken to dealer who was unable to duplicate problem and had no additional information. The second occurrence has just happened at about 11500 miles (about 11 months old). The circumstances were the same - 35mph, all sterring and braking impossible. The car was able to be restarted after a few minutes. Dealer has been notified again and service is scheduled. Both occurrences have no warnings prior to the engine stall. The situation is extremely dangerous.

34 Engine Stall problem

Failure Date: 03/30/2001

The engine stalled again in September of 2001. I was going approximately 25mph when it stalled and had to pull the emergency brake to get the vehicle to stop. The vehicle went sideways and the vehicle behind barely avoided hitting me. The dealership again told me that they could not determine what was wrong with the vehicle. I then contacted Fords customer service center and was told that they had not had any problems of this nature reported and that if the dealership could not determine what the problem was, there was nothing that could be done. This is a very serious problem. I was extremely lucky that I was not hit either time.

35 Engine Stall problem

Issue of engine stalling has happened for the fourth time. Indications are loss of power steering, gas, and breaks. No sounds to indicate failer. Check engine, oil, and battery lights come on. When vehicle hood is lifted one can hear an audible sound of electric current. When the key is turned off and on again vehicle starts promptly. Situation occurs when driving down a hill at approximatly 35 - 45 mph. For me they have all been damp or rainy days.
