The cruise control, abs and check engine warning lights suddenly illuminated as smoke begin emitting from the front end of the vehicle. The fire department was called and extinguished the fire. A police/fire report was available. The vehicle was then towed to the contact's residence. My family and I were driving along the insterstate with cruise controll set at 75 mph. We were going up a small hill and about to go into the passing lane. The car sounded like the transmission slipped in over drive and the rpms went through the roof. We were able to coast to the side of the road. We turned the vehicle off for serveral minutes and then turned it back on. The oil pressure light flickered on and off and the engine made a horrible screeching noise. We checked the oil and it was full. The car had to be towed to the mechanic were he then informed us that the car needed a new engine. He stated the the catalytic convereted had gone out causing the engine to fail. The car also will need a new transmission. The total cost to fix this is around $8000. 00. I contacted Ford today to tell them what had happened and they stated that there was nothing they could do since the car had not been serviced at a Ford service station consistantly since the car was first purchased and that they have had no other similiar complaints with this vechile. After researching online I have found many similar complaints where ever one has seemed to contact Ford and they say the same things to them. I also have had some smaller problems with this vehicle like the engine light going on and the emergency break light going on and brought them in to the shop and have had to replace the sensors. Right now I am not able to replace the vehicle due to finicial reasons.
(1) approximately 100 miles of highway driving led up to (2) a loss of power at all speeds with excessive rpms for given speed followed by a flashing check engine light, followed by considerable engine and cabin vibration. (3) Ford diagnosed the problem as a rare internal engine failure in cylinder #4. No remedy has been provided. The engine can be replaced for about $6,000.
: the contact stated the check engine light illuminated. The dealership determined the vehicle misfired on cylinder #1 and the engine needed to be replaced.
Ford 2002 Escape caught on fire. The fire was coming from the front driver's side dash engine compartment. This happened on July 27, 2005. The fire department and police department responded to the scene. The fire was contained in the vehicle. The walls in the garage had heavy smoke damage. They had to cut the garage door to get in. The consumer can't sleep in the house due to the smoke damage. Phone interview update (November 7, 2005): drove the vehicle for two hours. The vehicle was parked in the town house garage for an hour before it caught fire. The vehicle was totaled. The heaviest damage was at the drive side firewall area. The yellow engine warning light was on three weeks ago; the dealer said bring the vehicle in when the next oil change is due.
While driving 45 mph check engine light appeared on the dashboard and remained on. Consumer was able to restart vehicle, and took it to the dealer for inspection. Mechanic determined that the engine needed to be replaced.
Engine stalled coming out of driveway. I could not steer or use brakes. All the engine lights came on. I put the truck in park and it started back up with no problems. I am taking the truck to the dealership tomarrow. I wish I knew about the stalling complaints before I put my two children in the back seat.
While driving about 45 mph, the vehicle shut down without warning. Engine check light appeared on the dashboard. The cause was due to defective engine controls. Other problems are as followed: both rear door's body weatherstrips had come loose and were warped and the left rear quarter panel window.
My 2002 Ford Escape XLT stalled while I was driving it at 35 miles an hour. All power stopped. The engine light, oil light, and battery light all came on. I had my Escape towed to the local Ford dealer and they examined it today. They said that they did not find anything wrong with it and that they would not be able to fix it unless it stalled while they were driving it.
I have owned the 2002 Ford Escape aprx. 6 months. And have had a problem with it stalling while driving it. Once while driving aprx. 35 mph on a corner going to the left. I didn't relized it had stalled untill I lost my steering, I was able to pull it off the road and that was when I relized it had stalled all that was on was the engine light. I went straight to the delership and they told me to make an appointment. So I did for the following week. At that appointment. They were unable to match the problem, so they sent me on my way. The next week my mom was driving it going aprx. 35 mph. With several cars behind her when it stalled so she put it into neurtol restarted it than put it back into drive ( this is what the delership service dept. Told us to do so we wouldn't loose the steering or the brakes), and she continued home, and told me what had happened. I called the delership and they told me to bring it in. 3 days later they called and said they called the manufacture to see if they might know what the problem was, and they said this has happened befor and to replace the chip, it was a defect, so they did. I haven't had any problems with it till now 10-09-2002 aprx. 3000 miles later, when it stalled again while driving on a corner to the left aprx. 35 mph. I called the delership again and they scheduled an appt. For the following Monday 10-14-2002 on week later. The delership also offered me the forms to fill out for the lemon law to send in. I don't feel safe driving this SUV, it is a danger to my family, myself, and anyone I share the road with. This is a brand new SUV and should not have problems like this. Ford should do something about this. It is not safe!!! mr.
On three separate occasions while driving between 35-40 mph the car stalled in traffic. The engine light came on, the oil light came on and I lost power steering and power brakes. Each incident occured after the car had not been driven for a long period. The first time was after I had been at work all day and was going home. The second and third times were first thing in the morning after the car had been running approximately 10 minutes. The dealer and manufacturer have been notified.
While driving my 2002 Escape stalls--no power--no brakes. The power steering goes out the the engine light come on.
While driving down a steep hill vehicle stalled/ engine check light illuminated, and engine died. Driver had no steering or brakes. Felt this was very dangerous. Please provide any further information.
Consumer states that while driving at any speed and with no warning the vehicle will stall and it will be hard for the consumer to control the vehicle. Dealer notified. Mr consumer was informed by the dealer that there is a silent recall on the vehicle in replacing the engine, consumer stated the first day of purcahse the vehicle started to shake and there was smoke coming from under the hood and then the engine light illuminated.
Consumer comments that while going downhill, the engine would stall, the engine would turn off, and engine light would come on also causing consumer to loose power steering and brakes, dealership replaced the fuel lead.
My Escape was still new when I first experienced a total stall. I was on a downhill exit ramp from the interstate making a left hand turn onto a very busy one way street through an even busier intersection. I coasted at about 30-35 mph down to make my turn and realized that I had no steering or power at all. I had to fight to make the left turn and get to the curb. The experience left me shaking in shock and fear for quite some time. I had no trouble restarting it after I regained my composure. I took it to the initial point of sale and was told they had not heard of any problems. They "could not duplicate the problem". I have had three additional stalls, a different dealer replaced throttle, air intake. Another stall. Since purchasing this vehicle the cd player has been worked on twice (the dash had to be replaced because the service tech scratched it considerably), the passenger front window rolls up out of the track and the passenger front door would not unlock. The door had to be taken apart to fix the lock assembly consequently the interior door was replaced because it had to be torn off to get to the lock. Cruise control works intermittently, the rear wiper doesn't work correctly, the transmission shifts hard, the front end makes noises when turned, not to mention a rattle in the back that will drive you crazy and a musty smell. As if this weren't enough, this morning it began running rough, backfired and the engine light came on and stayed on. I made it home, thankfully and had it towed to the dealer. . . Again I am without my car! my husband works for Ford in louisville, ky and we are trying to be loyal, but this is too much! we have had trouble with different cars in the past, but I am afraid of this vehicle. I have a 16 yr. Old son about to get his license. It has been hard for me as an experienced driver to handle these situations, but I am terrified that it could happen to him. Dt.
