April 25, 2001 I drove the car 5 minutes to the local pool and car was parked for about an hour. |tthen drove friend back home from local pool to her house about a 5 minute drive, I then turned the car ignition was off, suddenly there was smoke coming from under the engine compartment area. Tried to open hood, grey smoke billowed out from under the hood, then sparks fell on the pavement from under the car and then flames burst out through the open crack of the hood. The fire seemed spontaneous, there was a burning smell like dirty air just before the smoke started. Fire department, police and ambulance were called. It had never occurred before the car was towed to a local body shop and was taken to another location by the insurance company. I know that recall work was done on the car twice and can verify with the service department. I believe that work was done on the brakes and the gas pedal as instructed in the recall notices. I believe the car is still being examined by the insurance investigators as of may 8, 2011. I have been informed by the insurance appraiser that the vehicle is a complete write off.

: the contact stated while driving 70 mph on an interstate, smoke was observed to be coming from behind the vehicle and flames were coming from under the hood. There was nothing unusual about the way the vehicle was operating before the fire started. The type of fire was classified as fuel. The service dealer was notified who determined that a rod shot threw the engine and made a large hole that caused the fire in the motor. The service dealer was willing to repair the motor if the contact would make a CO-payment. The manufacturer was not alerted. A police report was taken. This occurred in state of arkansas.
While driving at 35 mph, the engine died without warning. This resulted in brake failure. The consumer had to coast the vehicle to a stop. The dealership replaced the idle error control valve, mass air flow sensor, throttle body, eec relay, dpfe sensor and the evap valve. The manufacturer has a new letter ref#02-23-1 on this issue.
Engine quit running while driving.
While driving down a slight hill at approximately 30 mph, the steering suddenly became sluggish, then the engine quit. The dash instrument lights (check engine, airbag, and battery) came on and the brakes did not work at all. Fortunately I was near the bottom of the hill and could roll over to the side and stop up against a tree stump. The car would not restart immediately, but did after a few minutes.
I have a 2002 Ford Escape with 20000 miles on it. On Sunday March 23, 2003 my wife was driving down the highway around 45 miles an hour. She came up to a slower car sow she released the gas. The engine completely shut off. She had to forcefully get off the road trying to avoid an accident. She pulled over and it restarted. She continued cautiously to her mothers house. It didn't happen on the way home. I drove it when she got home and found the idle to be low. It would seem to be running around 4-500 rpms and seemed to be affected while tapping brakes or slowing down some. I have not yet taken it to the dealer.
While driving my 2002 Ford Escape over the mathews bridge in rush hour traffic, the engine cut off with no warning. I was able to coast off the bridge and coast to a stop. It restarted right away. This was the second time it happened. The first time was approx 1 month ago. Engine cut off without warning.
I have a 2002 Ford Escape. At 15,000 miles my engine blew. Two weeks earlier my sister who also has a 2002 Ford Escape lost her engine at 35,000 miles. Since then the car has been back for three rounds of repairs to the engine, the ball bearings, the power steering, and the coolant. This car is dangerous!.
The engine stopped while car was under way on a busy road (oil light came on, power just died to everything). Car had under 1200 miles. Dealer fixed per a technical bulletin. 3/8/03 it happened again on a very busy highway, accident narrowly avoided. Car has about 4600 miles. Car is back at dealer. Why has this recurred?.
Engine block cracked while I was driving causing the oil pan to explode and the oil caught on fire.
Engine cut out twice today while driving. Loss of power steering and brakes. This is the 5th failure since purchase.
