3 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem

Failure Date: 10/31/2006

I have a 2002, Ford Escape with 92,000 miles on it. There has been no major problems with ethe vehicle leading up to the failure that I am describing in this statement. On October 31, 2006 I was driving east-bound on m59, just east of schoenherr road in sterling heights, mi. I was approx. 15 miles from my home in auburn hills, mi and had approx. 10 minutes left untile I would have reached my destination. This was the first time that I had driven the vehicle all day. It was approx. 47 degrees farenheit and about 3:35pm. It was not raining, but a little windy. Upon making a stop just past the trafic light (due to heavy traffic dlays), I noticed smoke coming out of the engine compartment from under the hood. Within a minute of noticing the smoke outside, smoke started coming through the dash of my vehicle and into the interior cab. I rolled down the windows and made it into a parking lot, wher I had to evacuate the vehicle. Upon putting out the fire and inspecting the vehicle, the fire department was unable to determine the cause of the fire. The insurance adjustor looked at the vehicle today and we are still awaiting the insurance company's opinion as to the cause of the fire and what they will be willing to do about it.

4 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem

Failure Date: 03/01/2005

The engine light in the consumer's 2002 Ford Escape illuminated. The error code read p0401. Ford released at least four technical service bulletins covering this issue. The main problem was with the egr/dpfe pressure sensor. After the replacement part was installed, the vehicle ran fine.

5 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem

Failure Date: 07/09/2004

When accelerating or decelerating vehicle hesitated and or stalled. Recall 94v165000 was issued. However, vehicle's mileage prevented vehicle to be included in the recall.

6 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem

Failure Date: 12/12/2003

My wife was coasting (traveling downhill) in our 2002 Ford Escape XLT (2 wheel drive) when the engine suddenly stopped. The effect was as if the key had been turned off. She lost all power (steering, brakes, etc) and coasted into a sidewalk. It could have been much worse. Taking the proper precautions, she had the car towed to the nearest dealership (hayward Ford - very helpful, performed the TSB work right away), where they told her of a TSB that described the appropriate steps for the mechanics to take. The supposed TSB included replacement of the following items: throttle body assembly, air charge body, mass air flow sensor, air charge sensor gasket, power relay for pcm, egr sensor, and the purge regulation valve for vapor system. I searched the NHTSA TSB site for the bulletin and couldn't find it. The number we were given was TSB 02-23-01. I noticed that an investigation into the cause of this problem by the NHTSA was closed and reopened in Sep 2002. From what I have read here at the NHTSA site, I think it's time for Ford to warn their Escape owners of this problem before someone is injured.

7 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem

Failure Date: 03/19/2002

Vehicle stalls while driving. Dealer replaced pcm relay at 1,475 miles. Vehicle still stalling when foot is off of gas and going downhill or on curves. Vehicle stalls while driving without warning and power steering becomes stiff. Vehicle has stalled 5 times. After stalling, vehicle will start up. Dealer has replaced pcm relay, egr sensor and all tsbs have been completed. Dealer states everything checked out however problem still exists.

8 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem

At 40 mph the engine stalled out. I had to pull off the road and re start the engine. Loss of power to major components. If I had been 100 feet further down the road a major accident would have occurred due to 90 degree turn. Selling dealer has been contacted, due to be inspected 2/5/02.
