1 Steering Failed problem

Failure Date: 02/27/2021

Received a power steeting assist fault on my vehicle when turning it on in a parking lot. I was unable to steer the vehicle unless I gave it brut force. When calling Ford, they said that recall 14s05 was performed on my vehicle in 2014 which was suppose to fix this issue with some software update. There are many complaints that this software update did nothing to fix the issue and many times, caused steering failure after the software update. Ford is leaving many people out in the cold making them pay for their defect and found a way to "pretend" to fix the issue when they should have replaced the entire steering column to begin with, not a software fix. This failure should be fixed by Ford, especially if the software fix was not the correct solution.

This vehicle year and model was part of NHTSA campaign recall 14v284000 and Ford recall #14s05. Unfortunately they did not include our VIN # in the cars they would fix. Same problem as all the ones they decided to fix. Selective safety isn't safe. Since this issue is the same as the others, we too need to be reimbursed for the costs of making our car safe again.

Without warning (and during a 45 degree curve) the steering assist went out and at first the steering assist attempted to correct the steering and that made matters worse -- holding the wheel steady and continuing thru the turn was a challenge (and, I am 'stout' guy!). Got off the highway ASAP. Then an electric burn smell started. . Steering column (?). 20 Steering Failed problem

Failure Date: 03/21/2016

We took our Ford motor company 2008 Escape to the dealer for recall NHTSA 14v284000 or Ford #14s05. The dealer reprogrammed the power steering module. Prior to that we had no problems whatsoever with the steering. 4 months later the steering has failed. From what I am reading at several locations on the internet this is a common problem. I am asking the NHTSA to look at this problem closer. My opinion is there should be an additional recall that addresses this issue. If you've had a similar issue I urge you to contact Ford and file a complaint and contact the NHTSA and voice your concern. I was told by Ford it is my responsibility to fix the vehicle and they are offering no assistance.

21 Steering Failed problem

Failure Date: 03/07/2016

Had Ford recall #14v284000 (Ford #14s05) performed in April 2015 - which covered power steering control module. Was told "nothing wrong, updated software". March 2016 steering failed. Dealer diagnosed as failed torque sensor which supposedly is one of the items covered under recall. However was told this was no longer covered under recall - because the recall was "closed out" on our vehicle the day they found nothing wrong. Called Ford customer service 1-800-392-3673 who said same thing. Total scam! if it's not broke the day you take it in then they don't replace anything. Side stepping potentially defective steering components with a bogus software fix. Then later exposed to the safety risk of driving with steering components that may (and in this case) did fail. Again I feel this is a total sham!.

29 Steering Failed problem

Failure Date: 01/26/2015

Took my Ford Escape to dealer for the steering torque sensor, recall by Ford #14s05 in August 2014. The dealer did not get any "bad" codes, so they did a software update. On January 26, I could not steer my car. Fortunately, I was at a stop and not driving on the freeway. I had to have it towed to the local dealership. They said the steering torque sensor failed and I had to replace the entire steering assembly which is going to cost me $1200. Ford will not cover the repair because they said the "software update" was done. I have seen several other records of the same issue not being covered by Ford.

30 Steering Failed problem

Failure Date: 11/14/2014

Pursuant to the 2014 recall on my vehicle, I took my 2008 Escape to be serviced. Upon information and belief, the torque sensor module was reprogrammed to prevent the loss of steering. Said service was performed on October 1, 2014. On November 14, 2014, the vehicle lost complete control of steering while driving with my young child, three hours from home. After having the vehicle towed to the dealership that performed the work under the recall, I was told we were responsible for the repairs, despite the mechanic admitting and agreeing with us that it was an issue that should have been fixed under the recall. The mechanic's hands were tied as Ford would not authorize the work to be performed on the company's expense. The estimated price of repairs is $1600. The mechanic also told us had we not brought the vehicle in as instructed by the well publicized recall and the steering failed, it would have been covered under the recall. The recall states, "alternatively, the dealer may need to replace the torque sensor or the steering column. This service will be performed free of charge (parts and labor)". Ford indicated by phone that this only applies to the first visit. Any subsequent visit for a recall issue is the owner's expense. Ford's misrepresentations in its recall notice and subsequent actions are unfair and deceptive trade practices, not to mention an extreme safety issue and danger to consumers who believe not that their vehicle is safe to drive after being serviced by the recall.

Failure Date: 02/28/2014

The contact owns a 2008 Ford Escape. The contact stated that while driving approximately 30mph, a loud grinding noise emitted under the front and the steering wheel failed without warning. The VIN was not available. The failure and current mileage was 125,000.

32 Steering Failed problem

Failure Date: 02/01/2014

I was driving in the neighbor hood and my electronic steering failed. I was able to drive it to the nearest car shop and they took a look at it. They informed me the electronic steering chip was going bad. So it will work at times and then it will fail again. This is a major safety concern. I am a bigger guy so I can handle not having steering assist. However if this happens when not expecting it, it could easily cause an accident. There is a growing list of complaints online with people having the same problem.

33 Steering Failed problem

Failure Date: 01/20/2014

This is a safety issue that must be addressed by Ford.
