1 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 09/09/2024

My daughter was drive to college and stopped for gas. She called me saying the power steering assist failure. But she had not lost power steering. She called me a few hours later saying she could not turn her steering wheel to get turned around to leave the school. I came to assist her and sure enough the steering was very hard to turn, the power steering assist was blink on the dash and the engine light was on. I finally got the car turned around and started back to our mechaniac. She followed behind. I found the slower I would go the harder it became to steer. I did a solid 50-55 mph all the way there but could feel the tightness in the steering wheel. We made it to the garage. The mechanic called the next day and said he couldn't get it to start and we needed to take to a Ford dealership to have the car scanned. We called the Ford dealership, they said they couldn't get to it for another 2-3 weeks and referred us to a company in a 4-5 hour away to get a used part and come to us to fix. We researched if there were any recalls and found 14s05. Since we are the second owner of the car and never were notified of a recall or were told about a current recall at the time of purchase, we started to search if the recall had been fixed by the first owner (out of pocket) or through the recall. Please any information and/or guidance would be appreciated.

3 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 02/24/2020

The car was taken out of long term storage 18 months ago and all the recalls done. I have two safety issues. First of all twice, I have lost power steering control while driving on the 80 mph highway. All of a sudden I have to use my might to control the steering manually which catches you off guard and makes the steering wheel unexpectedly difficult to maneuver. The bozeman Ford dealership cannot find the issue. Second issue that just occurred and now getting worse each time I drive is the steering wheel column loudly shaking. This is getting worse and worse and began to occur whenever I was stopped. Now it seems to begin to shake while I'm starting to drive again after braking to a stop as well. It shakes so much and so loudly I'm afraid a crucial screw will pop out. I'm concerned with my safety as I've seen this happen to other owners of this car. . . But years ago. It's happening to me now because it was in storage. For 4 years. In case you were wondering, I had everything checked out on this car as soon as I took it out of storage. I do all the regular maintenance at Ford dealerships. I'm concerned this hasn't been recalled as I'm afraid these two events are related and lots of other 2008 Ford Escape owners are having the same issues. These events took place in 2019 and 2020. My steering is having issues with steering power stopping while driving. Secondly I now have a loud shaking steering wheel wh.

4 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 11/11/2019

My vehicle lost power steering assist. It had momentarily gone out before while I was driving, but resumed function. When I started my car and began backing out of my driveway, the power steering assist failed and did not resume. There is already a recall, 14v284000 for torque sensors failing in 2008 Ford Escapes, but a recall was not issued for my vehicle.

Replaced that. It worked for about 7 months then lost power steering again. This time it is the steering column. The part is $1,200 plus ta, this is my mechanics cost!! I dont have money to replace this, I am a single mother and have put more than $7,000 in this truck if I could get rid of it I would. I owe too much money on it!.

9 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 11/22/2018

Was driving vehicle in city, suddenly lost power steering, nearly wrecking. I got car to mechanic, he said the steering shaft torque sensor was bad. He also stated that there was a recall from Ford for this. I called Ford because the year and model did match the recall. #14s05. I was told by Ford that this vehicle was not covered. I reluctantly paid out of pocket to repair because this was dangerous. I do find it coincidental that there was a recall for this same exact thing on this vehicle, but was told this one was not covered any help would be appreciated, this is an unsafe condition.

10 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 11/10/2018

Lost power steering while driving making it difficult to steer.

11 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 10/25/2018

On 10/25/2018, my daughter was driving her 2008 Ford Escape and the steering wheel became extremely difficult to turn. She completely lost power steering. This occurred in traffic and she was not able to continue steering the car. No warnings or codes appeared. This was a very dangerous and scary situation that could have resulted in her having an accident and perhaps killing someone or herself. The vehicle was towed to a dealership in birmingham, al (long-lewis Ford) and diagnosed with code b2278/needs steering column assembly. I immediately started contacting Ford as this was certainly a safety issue. After talking with a supervisor, they informed me that safety recall 14s05 was completed on the car on July 2014, 2018 at Ford square of mount vernon in mount vernon, IL so there were no recalls available at the time. I proceeded to contact that dealership and found out that they only reprogrammed the pscm since the car didn't have a fault code. I did not own the car during this time since I purchased it 5 months later. Intermittent issues occurred after the purchase while traveling on the highway but were told by the dealership that everything was ok. Again, no warnings or codes appeared. I have been told by Ford mechanics that the reprogramming of the pscm removed Ford from responsibility and now owners are stuck with an expensive car repair. Several dealerships have stated that Ford was negligent in correcting the problem and now more cars are starting to see the problem and causing everybody on the road to be at risk of an accident, possibly resulting in death. The car has 113,000 miles on it and it will be repaired at long-lewis Ford at my expense which is very costly. The car was assembled at the kansas city plant which was the subject of the recall.

12 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 10/23/2018

Lost power steering assist for a couple of seconds making a right turn at lower speed. After sitting for 10 hours, started car and had no power steering assist when backing up. Vehicle has recall 14s05. Recall is as follows: if vehicle has code b2278, replace power steering torque sensor. If vehicle has code b3142 or b2277, replace steering assembly. If no codes stored, reprogram pscm and ic module. My car had no codes June 2016 and reprograming was done. Two years later, I have no power steering and code b2278. Power steering torque sensor is defective. Dealer/manufacturer states recall was already done and will not perform sensor replacement.

13 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 07/28/2018

Lost my power steering as I was driving at a high rate of speed almost rolled and crashed the vehicle. This is a known problem and Ford I s simply doing nothing about it. Please do something before someone gets badly hurt or killed. This vehicle was taken into the dealer for a recall 14s05 on Jan. 1st 2018. They simply did a computer update and this did not repair the vehicle. Someone needs to hold Ford accountable.

14 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 04/16/2018

Car lost power steering while driving.

15 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 01/19/2018

My 17yr old son was driving his car home from school when he could not barely turn off highway. He lost all power steering. His car was not part of original recall. I called Ford and they told me to hold onto receipts in case his car is included in next recall. There was no prior warnings when it failed. It could have caused a major accident!.

16 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 01/15/2018

The power steering failed while driving, took to dealership and they told my daughter since the update was done it would cost $800 to fix part. This part should've been covered by the recall, now they want $2000 to fix because another part is bad. They sent my daughter a letter about the steering ujoint just to get it in the shop, that's when they did their update to satisfy your recall, now she lost power steering while driving, now won't honor your recall. Would you put your child behind this steering system or let them charge your child for the repairs?.

17 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 09/25/2017

I was driving and the message center displayed power steering assist fault and lost all power steering while driving on 9/25/2017.

18 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 02/26/2017

I was driving and lost all power steering. Then a error message came on saying power steering sensor fault. I could have got into a crash and am really upset and feel like Ford should fix this.

19 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 02/08/2017

I was turning when I lost power steering and nearly crashed into other cars waiting at the intersection. I have a power steering assist failure light on. I previously had my car taken to the Ford dealership here in brighton colorado after I received the recall notice several months prior in 2016. Cannot afford the price for repairs and feel Ford needs to fix this problem now.

20 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 02/06/2016

Recall 14v284 was ineffective. Per Ford, the recall was administered on me vehicle on 18sep14. This was when the software was updated. The power steering on the vehicle locked in a left turn, in the snow, in Dec 2014. The steering column shuttered, as if the abs was working. It righted itself and there wasn't anything on the dash advising a fault. Shortly after that it became hard to steer, but only temporarily. The diagnosis was no problem found. The power steering went completely out and displayed a fault. See attached 27jan15. Diagnosis, battery at fault. This has continued intermittently. The solution, pull over and restart, this solves the problem. Until now. The power steering went out. It locked up, shuttered, released and no power steering. This occurred on 06feb16. This was in a hotel parking lot and no one was injured. The vehicle was taken into service and the torque sensors were identified as needing replaced. I advised the ongoing situation and was referred to Ford. I contacted Ford at 800-392-3673. I was denied coverage. They were polite but still denied. I was told that they discovered no problem when they tested the system on the recall and it had been too long. If there were any investigations identifying further recalls I would be able to submit for reimbursement. I called the next day and advised the power steering failure of 27jan15 and was again denied coverage. While everyone was polite, the concern is still not addressed. Twice since the recall was performed the steering has locked in a turn. At least six times since the recall the vehicle has lost power steering capabilities in motion. As no one was hurt and there wasn't any property damage, I believe the situation is being overlooked.

21 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 01/21/2016

Car lost all power steering with no warning while crossing 3 lanes of traffic turning onto a side street. We determined this issue was include in recall 14s05 and took vehicle to dealer to have it fixed. Dealer says Ford reprogrammed the power steering control module and considered the recall closed on my vehicle. The supposed reprogramming of the module was supposed to warn us if the power steering had a failure. No warning light or sound appeared before, during or after the complete loss of power steering. Ford would have replaced the torque sensor or the steering column had there been a power steering issue at the time the vehicle was taken in to address the recall. So basically if we had ignored the recall we would have been much better off. We would've been able to have the parts replaced by Ford but a year and a half later the parts they knew were going to fail are not covered by the recall. The only diagnostic trouble code showing up was b2278. Ford's service action document sent to dealers says if code b2278 appears you only replace the torque sensor. Our mechanic followed Ford's instructions and we had a dealership calibrate the steering sensor. Unfortunately the power steering still does not work. No diagnostic trouble codes are present at this time and the steering wheel is now turning all the way to one side without any input. The dealership that calibrated the sensor has charged us $110 to calibrate a sensor which did absolutely nothing, wants another $110 to diagnose what else could be wrong, and if we need to replace the $955. 00 steering column will charge $275 to install it. How can this possibly be legal for Ford to issue a recall for over 700,000 vehicles and not fix the issue? and the fix they say they did on my vehicle failed to give any warning of the power steering failure.

22 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 01/04/2016

My 2008 Ford Escape has lost power steering. It no longer works.

23 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 12/02/2015

Lost power steering. Vehicle was stationary. Dealer is claiming that b/c I brought it in to them 10 months ago and had the codes checked (none found at the time), that my recall coverage is now null and void. I would have been better off never taking it in for the recall, as the charges are around $1000. 00 and are exactly what my car is recalled for (electric power steering assist failure. ).

24 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 11/19/2015

I have my vehicle in to have recall 14s05 corrected. The dealer stated they only needed to update the software and send me on my way. Then as I was driving into work three weeks later, I lost all power steering control. I brought the vehicle back to the dealer and was told that I needed to pay out of pocket to have the torque sensor and steering column replaced to correct the issue. The two parts that I am being told that I have to pay out of pocket for are parts that are included in recall 14s05. After numerous calls to the dealer and Ford, I'm still being told that the recall for my VIN has been closed. If you need any other information to my situation, please let me know.

25 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 11/18/2015

I had stopped at a stop to turn right, as I was turning I received an alert and message power steering assistance failure and lost power steering, it did return after a moment or so. When I called the dealer I was told that the recall was closed and to contact Ford to file a complaint and to bring it to them in a few days to have them take a look. Today it happened again on my way to work but resumed working after a moment. When I tried to drive it at lunchtime there is absolutely no power steering and the alert is on full time. It is going to the dealer today for repairs on something that the recall never actually fixed, nothing was replaced when I brought it to the dealer in July of 2014. I feel that this needs to be investigated further since now my car is actually hazardous to myself and others.

26 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 10/19/2015

I had a power steering recall done on my truck at dons Ford. The manager who did the recall only knew about a portion of the recall so all he did was reprogram my computer. After 2 weeks I lost my power steering all together ( while I was driving almost hit a wall ) brought it back to the dealer told them I was still having issues with the power steering the recall didnt fix it. They said the recall was closed because they did part of it. Come to find out the power steering torque module went and I would have to pay over $450. 00 to repair it. In the mean time I called to find out about the recall there were 3 things involved in the recall 1) reprogram computer 2) replace the steering column 3) replace the power steering torque module. I went to the manager and told him about the 3 parts of the recall he said sorry over and over because he only saw the reprogram of the computer. He also said because they closed the recall that I would still have to pay to get the module replaced because if they did it they wouldnt be reimbursed for the repair. They also said well since they did the reprogram I put over 200 miles on the truck so the power steering torque could have gone out because of that.

27 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 02/22/2015

I was driving home when I suddenly lost power steering in my 08 Ford Escape. I did get a recall notice in the mail from fomoco in August for the problem. I took the vehicle to the Ford dealership in August 2014 to have the recall on the power steering taken care of. I now need to change the whole steering column due to failure of the electrical components that were supposed to be corrected by the recall. Ford motor company is now telling me a am responsible for all costs and they did their part. I feel that if they did their part correctly, I would not be in this predicament. Apparently their recall was not worth the time it took me to take it to the Ford garage. I am also reading on numerous forums that this is becoming a common problem with Ford Escapes that have had this recall done.

28 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 11/06/2014

10/8 per recall14s05/14v-284 brought vehicle into koerner Ford of syracuse where they updated the pscm. 11/6 while driving, car lost power steering. 11/11 brought car into mechanic who identified it as a b2278 steering shaft torque sensor malfunction. Called koerner as this should have been fixed under the recall. Koerner advised that they've already serviced it under the recall and we would have to pay for the vehicle to be fixed. Called Ford customer service rep twice (11/11 and 11/13) who said that the service manager from koerner advised that his recall notice states that if he updates the software and there is no other codes coming up when the car is brought in for the recall service, they do not need to fix it. Per my recall notice, that is not directly or indirectly stated. Also learned from Ford rep on 11/13 that the koerner service manager stated that this happened to another vehicle and they refused to fix it under the recall. To me, this appears to be shady business practice.

29 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 04/08/2014

Experienced frequent loss of power steering at speed and at stop a few months ago. Replacing the battery resolved it for 2 months. Then it started again when in tucson. Extreme wobble in the steering column at all times. Restarting the car helped reset power steering for the first 2 days if the car lost power steering while at rest. Restarting the car at speed is not possible and losing power steering is pretty sudden and scary. Was driving at 70mph on interstate 10 and lost power steering several times. Had to pull over with available manual steering, which was hard. Researched online and found similar issues with the 2008 Ford Escape--loss of power steering both at rest and at speed. Filing complaint.

30 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 03/25/2014

While driving in regular traffic, I noticed that my steering wheel would shudder when stopped. After parking, shutting off car, and then returning, my car had lost its power steering. It has intermittently returned after turning car. Off/on, but it is happening more often. Quick internet search listed very similar issues and symptoms. All pointing towards the electronic steering assembly. Which looks like it costs nearly $1400 to fix usually. I find this extremely dangerous and will not be having my wife or child in this vehicle.

31 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 03/10/2014

The contact owns a 2008 Ford Escape. The contact stated that while idling, the steering wheel shook and lost power steering. The vehicle was restarted on numerous occasions in order to regain power steering. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who diagnosed that the torque sensor needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The contact referenced NHTSA campaign id number 14v284000 (electrical system), however the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 182,119.

32 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 03/04/2014

While driving I lost all power steering. The SUV became very difficult to steer. Once I was able to muscle it over to the side of the road the steering wheel started to shake back and forth on its own. After turning the car off then back on this went away for a short time. Then after about a month or so it happened again. Now this happens frequently. I cant drive without this happening. This is very dangerous and needs to be recalled.

33 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 03/03/2014

The contact owns a 2008 Ford Escape. The contact stated while driving at no particular speed the vehicle lost power steering without warning and the steering wheel was very hard to turn. The power steering was engaged when the vehicle was turned off and restarted. This failure occurred thirty times over a period of a month. The vehicle was not taken to an authorized dealer for diagnostic testing. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 125,000.

34 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 02/20/2014

My wife was driving my 9 year old daughter to her karate class when there was suddenly a lot of vibration in the wheel. The steering wheel suddenly locked up causing my wife to lose power steering on a small turn. My wife was able to get our car off the road as there was a dirt pulloff to the side. We took it to a garage and they said this is a common problem. After doing research I found other car manufacturers will honor a recall for this same problem. Ford is not honoring any recalls and is making money off of this dangerous defect. It is sad to see a car manufacturer who is willing to put families lives at risk to make extra cash. After talking around my mother also had the same problem with her Escape of the same year. I had always been a fan of Ford products, however I will never buy another Ford product again.

35 Lose Power Steering problem

Failure Date: 02/08/2014

Lost power steering when turning from a stop. Pulled over stopped and restarted the car and the steering came back. Happened again 2 weeks later. When the steering goes out it is nearly impossible to steer the car. The second time it happened was at 30 mph and was lucky enough to be near a shopping center where I could pull in, stop and restart the car. There is no warning when this happens it just goes!.
