Lose Power Steering problems of the 2010 Ford Escape

Electric power steering went out with 130k+ on the vehicle. There was a recall for this back in 2014 but because it wasn't "broken" in 2014 they closed the recall. Now in 2020, it is giving fault codes and it stopped working all together. Ford refuses to replace the system because it wasn't broken 6 years ago when they realized the mechanics of the system were faulty in the first place. The vehicle was being backed out of a driveway when it lost power steering almost causing an accident.

For the last 2 months or so, when I have turned the key in the ignition, the vehicle would not start. I would have to turn the key back to the off position & try repeatedly to turn the key all the way forward to finally get the vehicle to start. Because of past problems with the vehicle engine dying suddenly on me & in particular a couple times when I was turning the steering wheel & my right hand happen to gently brush the key in the ignition. . . . I now wondered if I could start the engine my simply gently turning the steering wheel. The next time I turned the key all the way forward to start the engine & nothing happened I kept the key turned all the way forward in the ignition & tried to gently turn the steering wheel. . . The engine came right on. Quite alarming & scary to think that you can turn the engine on by turning the steering wheel. Explains why the engine easily turned off in the past when my right hand barely touched the key in the ignition & I lost power steering. Perhaps Ford's safety recall 14v-284 was actually about this problem & not the torque sensor they claimed. . . That situation involved an electric power steering system fault & loss of power steering as well. A local Ford dealer (1-7-2020) charged me $618 to replace the lock housing & the problem has not happened since. Hopefully I don't lose power steering again any time soon again. The vehicle has just over a 100,000 miles & has been horribly horribly horribly unreliable. We bought this junk brand new & neither Ford nor the dealer have ever reached out to us to right this wrong. Nearly $40,000 wasted for an unreliable vehicle that I would be lucky to get $3,000 for on a trade-in not to mention that I am scared a new unaware owner could lose power steering suddenly & not know how to react. . . . Especially @ high speed & in a turn in a road. God help you if your not strong & calm.

While driving my Escape I lost all power steering control. Error noted was power steering assist fault.

Pulling into parking spot lost power steering completely. More then once on multiple occasions.

Power steering lost intermittently. Power steering module assembly was fixed under recall in 2015 but has failed again. Ford wont stand by the part they fixed it with. This is a major safety concern on the road when you lose power steering due to a failed part.

While I was driving I heard a click and lost my power steering. It came back and then off again. I had to pull over and turn off my ignition. I waited a few minutes and re-started it, it again kept going back and forth between power and manual steering while driving at 35 mph down back roads to my home.

While driving along 2 lane roadway at 45 mph immediately lost power steering, this nearly caused a head on collision.

Message saying "power steering assist fault" then lost all power steering. Started car up to drive, message came on message center, went to move vehicle, then had no power steering and went straight out into road. Needs to be covered under the recall, since it is exactly what the recall is.

The car was in motion on a county rd and I lost power steering. After getting off the road and parking the car I could not get it out of the parking space. I had to call my daughter to do it. I was told the car was recalled and I had it done Aug of 2014. They must of replaced it with the same faulty part because 4 years later the same part went it cost me $1,290. 38 to replace it. Loss of power steering. Ford closed the recall on the vehicle after having it checked but nothing had been replaced. Now vehicle loses power steering in the middle of a turn and Ford refuses to make updates to replace the steering column or update the software. All american Ford in paramus, NJ agreed that my vehicle should be fixed under the recall but Ford corporation refused to reopen the recall even though nothing had ever been replaced or repaired under the recall. Recall number is 14s05.

Was in ohio, rainy day, tried to make a left turn and lost power steering. Very difficult to turn the wheel and thankfully didn't hit anything. Parked, looked to see if it was regular power steering (where I could find a place to add fluid if it was low-came to realize my car has an eps system), ate lunch and when I came back after letting the car sit for about half an hour power steering was active and responsive again. Was fine on trip back to michigan but wondering when it is going to go out on me again.

I lost power steering while driving on a highway. It happened unexpectedly and it caused the steering wheel to jerk on me.

Luckily my wife was driving at a slow rate of speed and only a block from the house, when with no warning lost power steering. The dash lit up with power steering assist fault. After researching I found many instances of this happening and fire having a recall on 2008-2011 Ford Escapes. Once going to my local Ford service center I was informed that my vehicle was not one of them. Clearly a safety issue they need to fess up to.

2010 Ford Escape. Consumer writes in regards to issues with steering. The consumer requested for NHTSA to hold a public hearing to resolve power steering issues. The vehicle would consistently lose power steering while driving.

I was driving my 2010 Ford Escape when I all of a sudden lost power steering while turning with no warning. I was able to pull off on the side of the road then my Escape began to make a "dinging" noise repeatedly after the vehicle was stopped and put in park. The car then showed "power steering assist fault" . My Escape has not had power steering since this incident. I called the dealership I purchased the Escape from and they informed that the power steering assist recall had been satisfied prior to me purchasing it with the reprogram and nothing replaced. I then called Ford customer care who confirmed this information and that I would have to pay for the repair myself since the recall was already satisfied with the reprogram. When running a code scanner it comes back as the torque sensor code. I am currently barely able to drive the vehicle without the power steering and unable to afford the $1500-$2000 repair that I was told "might work" by the dealership.

Tl the contact owns a 2010 Ford Escape. While stopped at a red light, the vehicle began to lose power steering ability and the "power steering assist fault" warning indicator illuminated. The vehicle was not towed. The vehicle was taken to sunrise Ford of north hollywood (5500 lankershim blvd, hollywood, CA), but was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The VIN was unknown. The approximate failure mileage was 120,000.

Was driving on spring garden street. . . Turning left on columbus blvd. . . There was a strange beep noise from dash area . . Than lost power steering. The warning 'power steering assist failure' popped up on screen. Was very hard to steer. . . And almost impossible to park.

While driving vehicle at 30 mph on city street, lost power steering while making a turn in traffic. Vehicle came close to hitting a parked car due to sudden and unexpected loss of power steering vehicle posted a power steering assist warning on dashboard.

The steering: electric power assist system/torque sensor. I have no power steering what so ever. Lost all power steering. Cannot drive vehicle.

Power steering assist fault. Car computer was reprogrammed July 2014 as per recall 14s05. Now unable to drive because of fault/failure. 108,000 miles. Daughter was driving on local road when she lost all power steering. Very difficult to manuever to safe place. Worse than the old manual steering cars.

My 2010 Ford Escape has a misfire between the steering or ignition column and the electrical system, the car rides very rough and has lost power steering during driving on a highway, brought into Ford dealership and they said no recall for the parts needed to repair, I read thenhtsa reports and read all the facts that happened to my car it said it is the control module and instrument cluster module. . But dealership said no recall.

Lost power steering suddenly when turning corner.

I was traveling down the raod at approximately 35mph when my power steering completely went out. I had to use extreme force to manuever my vehicle to the side of the road. I turned it off, waited about 5 minutes, and then turned it back on. The power steering worked for about 1 mile, at which time I lost my power steering. I was unable to complete a turn on a roundabout and almost hit another vehicle because it was so difficult to steer.

Lost power steering - was hard to maneuver vehicle out of roadway. Serious traffic hazard with oncoming traffic. Happens out of the blue and there is no warning that loss of power steering is going to occur. I shut the vehicle off, waited a few minutes, turned the vehicle back on and the problem resolved. However, this has happened prior about 3 months before this incident. Have there been any recalls regarding this issue?.
