Electric Power Assist Steering System problems of the 2011 Ford Escape

1 Electric Power Assist Steering System problem

Failure Date: 11/21/2021

The contact owns a 2011 Ford Escape. The contact stated that while driving at 35 mph on a roundabout, the steering wheel inadvertently lost power steering functionality. The contact veered to the side of the road. The contact turned off and restarted the vehicle and power steering functionality returned. The contact continued to drive the vehicle; however, the failure reoccurred several times while driving. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who diagnosed that the torque sensor signal needed to be replaced. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer and the contact was informed that the manufacturer suggested that the entire steering assembly be replaced. The dealer informed the contact that the repair would be completed at his expense because the VIN was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 14v284000 (steering). The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to NHTSA. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 113,000.

2 Electric Power Assist Steering System problem

Failure Date: 01/15/2021

The contact owns a 2011 Ford Escape. The contact stated that while driving into a parking area at a slow speed, the vehicle abruptly lost electric power steering assist. After restarting the vehicle, the vehicle returned to normal functionality; however, the failure recurred and had since become a regular failure. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer or an independent mechanic to be diagnosed or repaired. After investigation, the contact related the failure to NHTSA campaign number: 14v284000 (steering) however, the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 95,000.

3 Electric Power Assist Steering System problem

Failure Date: 05/07/2020

The contact owns a 2011 Ford Escape. The contact stated that in 2014, his vehicle was repaired under NHTSA campaign number: 14v284000 (steering) at Ford & Lincoln of smithtown (440 east jericho turnpike, st james, NY 11780). The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the power steering assist warning message flashed intermittently and the vehicle loss power steering functionality. The vehicle was taken back to the same dealer, where he was informed that the vehicle was no longer under recall. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. A recall repair approval request was filed however the request was denied. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 57,000.
