1 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 11/07/2020

While driving, my power steering went out to where I could not turn the steering wheel to turn a corner which almost lead to me and my husband getting hit by a semi truck. The car had been running and turning just fine up to stopping at the stop sign. Once I went to turn right, I couldn't turn the steering wheel and went straight through the intersection instead which is when I was almost hit by a semi truck that was headed in the other direction because I couldn't turn right, my car went straight the the intersection. Had to turn the car off sit for a few minutes, turn it back on and then it worked. Took it to the auto repair shop 3 days later and it happened again to them. The power steering just stops working while the car is already driving down the road which is not safe at all. Thankfully I was not in the highway yet. There is a current recall for this power steering torque issue and it is recommended that the whole power steering control module be replaced. Was told by Ford that this is VIN specific. However, my 2011 was manufactured in kansas city and came off the manufacturing line on 9/27/2010. Recall states that this affected 2011 Ford Escapes from the kansas city plant through 9/16/2010. Ford would not tell me when the steering column portion of my car was actually constructed before coming off the line on 9/27/2010 and could not verify parts that were used in the steering column module yet the issue this car is having matches exactly what that recall was for. I do think this recall needs to be further evaluated as it has obviously effected more vehicles than Ford is willing to admit or look into especially since my car's manufacturing date was only 16 days after the recall date from the same manufacturing plant of kansas city.

3 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 11/12/2019

Electric power steering goes out all of a sudden while I'm driving. I have to man handle the wheel till it comes back and it almost caused a couple of bad accidents. I don't like feeling unsafe driving a car I'm paying for especially with my kids in it. Took it too the dealership to get diagnosed and my torque sensor in the steering column has a bad connection, and can cause the wheel to lock up. The most frustrating part is my particular VIN is not covered with the recall for the exact same issue with other 2011 Ford Escapes. I don't have $700 to dish out at all times working for the army. Would be awesome if the recall would cover all 2011 Escapes so I can get the issue fixed and my family doesn't have to stress about it anymore.

6 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 05/10/2019

A knock started in my steering column. I got increasingly worse. My steering became jerky and uncontrollable. I was able to get my truck to a repair shop. They found the steering column bad. This will be the second time since I have owned the truck that this steering column has gone bad. This is very dangerous and could have caused a very serious accident if I did not learn from the first recall. Two times with the same part and problem. I do not think this was fixed and a continued investigation into the steering column should exist.

7 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 02/10/2019

8 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 11/20/2018

After completing my shopping at fred meyer, I went to start my vehicle and noticed that the power steering wasn't working. I was stationary waiting to back out of my parking space. I tried a couple of times to shut the vehicle off and restart it to see if that would fix the problem. It did not. I was able to drive home with much difficulty trying to steer, but got it home safely. I called my local Ford dealer and they told me it was probably the electric steering had gone out. I was told it will cost me around $1200. 00 to repair. The steering column needs to be replaced. Ford has had a problem with this for a long time. I had a 2010 Ford Escape that had the same thing happen to it. I spent the money to fix that one. I really feel it is unfair that I have to repeat the same thing over again with this 2011. This is a total danger for anyone driving it and Ford needs to repair this before anyone gets seriously hurt in an accident. Ford should have to recall this vehicle and make the necessary repairs so that this does not happen again. I do ask that you intervene and make Ford recall and fix this issue. There is a recall on 2011 Ford Escapes for this, recall number 14v284000, but it does not cover the date of manufacture for my particular vehicle. This recall should include more vehicles that were manufactured at a later date.

9 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 10/21/2018

When driving my car at low speeds, the power steering unit locks up randomly and unpredictably especially when attempting to make a turn. After contacting Ford about the issue, I learned that there was a large recall for Escapes from 2008-2011 made at the kansas city plant, where my Escape was produced at according to my VIN number. However, when contacting Ford about this issue I was having, they said that my VIN did not qualify for a recall because my car was not produced in the same "batch" that the recall is for. This is a danger to both myself and the public because being unable to turn my steering wheel is a huge safety concern. After taking my car to a mechanic they explained that my steering column is broken, which appears happens fairly often to this model of Escapes.

10 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 09/17/2018

Tl the contact owns a 2011 Ford Escape. While driving in reverse, the steering seized without warning. 12 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 03/06/2018

Beginning February 16, 2018 I began experiencing vibration and bouncing of steering wheel even when the vehicle was parked. I addition to steering concern - electrical system appears to be shorting out affecting the dash electronics such as indicator lights on dash, radio operation and door locks. The steering malfunction became steadily worse to the point that in early March 2018 I began inquiring on vehicle recalls. In speaking to Ford was advised that a steering unit recall was issued but my vehicle was not listed. Further communication with Ford identified the possibility that a clerical error occurred which failed to include my VIN to the recall as my vehicle sticker did not identify the date of manufacture only the month and year. More telephone calls with Ford identified my 2011 Ford Escape as being manufactured on 09/09/2010 and was included in the recall. Conversations since 2/16/18 yielded that mojave auto group performed a software reset in December 2014 rather than replacement of the steering unit. When I began speaking with Ford and NHTSA the vehicle was still operational. On 3/6/18 mojave auto group has inspected my vehicle and written up the power assist failure and found the steering column bad and needing replacement. Information on my vehicle has been documented within the mojave auto group system under so#605329.

13 Steering Column problem

14 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 11/08/2017

Failure of power assist suddenly without warning. Fortunately, it happened at low speed as exiting a parking lot. Towed to repair shop (non-Ford) . Error code b2778 indicated with remedy of replace steering column. Appear that the safety problem identified under Ford recall 14s05 is more widespread than the vehicles the recall covered forcing us to pay for this safety fix.

15 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 03/24/2017

The contact owns a 2011 Ford Escape. While driving 5 mph, the power steering became difficult to turn and the traction control indicator on the instrument panel illuminated. 17 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2016

The power steering randomly goes out. Sometimes immediately upon turning the vehicle on, other times while driving down the high way, sometimes while driving slow, or turning. It is completely random. The quick/temporary fix is to turn the vehicle back off and on again and it goes away for a while. I took the vehicle in to Ford and they have to replace the steering column which comes to a total of around $1500. This is the same problems other vehicles had that were a part of the recall. My year is included in the recall but for some reason my VIN is not.

18 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 05/15/2016

Last year it began when the vehicle was started the power steering would not work. You could shut the engine off and restart it and it would work. As time went by it happened more frequently and I called the Ford dealer about a recall someone had told me about and was told that our Escape was not included and that I should file a complaint with you. I did that last year and have gotten no response. It has gotten progressively worse. It has been shut off and restarted so many times that it killed the battery. It still had volts but no longer had enough cold cranking amps to start the engine. Now it has happened a couple of times while I was driving. When it stops it almost snatches the steering wheel out of your hands. There is never any warning and no warning lights come on. Sometimes when it is quiet in the car I can hear a click come from the steering column and it either quits working or if it was not working it start back. Three days ago it happened while I was in the middle of a turn at an intersection that has two turn lanes and I almost hit the car next to me. If it had happened while my wife was driving she probably would have hit them. There is a good possibility of this as it is her vehicle. I am driving it this week because I am a little uncomfortable with her driving it. I live in maryland and work all week in new jersey. I hope it does not happen while I am on the NJ turnpike as people on there like to stay close and goes fast. I really have no choice because we have to be able to go to work and cannot afford to have it fixed. My understanding is that there are several possibilities that go from software programing, sensor replacement or steering column replacement. It is obvious from the symptoms that it should be included in the recall but has not been.

19 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 10/19/2015

Tl-the contact owns a 2011 Ford Escape. The contact stated while driving approximately 30 mph, the steering wheel seized. The failure recurred multiple times intermittently. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the steering column needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 20,000. Mf.

20 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 10/31/2014

Tl-the contact owns a 2011 Ford Escape. The contact stated that while making a left turn at a low speed, the steering became difficult to maneuver without warning. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was serviced under NHTSA campaign: 14v284000 (steering) however, the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer where it was diagnosed that an unknown sensor related to steering needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The failure recurred. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the steering column assembly needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage 65,000. Ss.

21 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 07/03/2014

The vehicle was taken into a Ford dealership to be serviced and after that the control module for the airbags went out. The part had to be ordered and while we were on vacation the steering began locking up and the traction control lights began showing disabled. Also, the car began saying to resync something because the tire pressure was low when it was just fine. After returning from vacation and the steering column totally locking up several times, the dealership now tells us that additional control modules are out. When the steering locks it requires stopping no matter where you are at and turning off the vehicle to reset and then starting it again. This probably happened a dozen or more times on busy highways. This vehicle is roughly three years old and they can't even say why the modules are continuing to go out and if fixing them will even solve the problem. The dealership also indicated that the traction control issue could cause the vehicle to roll on curvy roads. I spoke with customer service and they said to bad, this is not on thier list of items that they have to fix. They will let engineering know but no guarantee that they will even respond to this issue. Will never buy a Ford again in this case as this is going to cost roughly $2500 - $3500 to fix and nothing to say it won't go out again. I have never had an electronic control module go out on any other vehicle let alone after 3 years and Ford is not helpful.

22 Steering Column problem

The vehicle was taken to the dealer for repairs where the steering column, power assist motor, steering rack and shaft were being replaced. The failure mileage was 5 and the current mileage was 1,000.
