36 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 11/10/2014

I was driving on a regular street in my area at the rate of 35. The speed limit is 40, so I decided to increase my speed to that of the speed limit. When I proceeded to accelerate, it appeared that the engine was just spinning, but not accelerating, when all of a sudden, it just lunged forward, not once, but twice. This was quite frightening as I had no advanced warning this was going to happen. After that incident, it appeared to be driving normal, until it happened again about a week later. I am afraid whenever I get behind the wheel now, but it is the only vehicle I own and I use it to get back and forth to work, so I am proceeding with extreme caution.

37 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 11/01/2014

My car will be idling and suddenly power down. Recently while I have been slowing down at a traffic light, stop light, or braking for traffic it will power down. After researching online I have found that hundreds of other Ford Escape owners have had the same issue, some have had it happen while driving at high rates of speed. I have taken it to 4 different mechanics, 2 of which are Ford dealerships and they work on it charge me a lot of money and it continues to happen. Almost a year now! I'm fed up.

38 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 10/14/2014

Car lost power suddenly while driving on freeway at 65 mph. I pulled over to right lane in heavy rush hour traffic. I coasted at reduced and slowing speed to the next an exit ramp, which was another freeway. Several cars were honking and passing me on the exit ramp. I pulled over and drove on shoulder for another mile until I came to a slight hill. I stopped on the narrow shoulder because the car would not move. The engine was still running, but at low rpm. The wrench icon showed on the dashboard. I turned engine off and waited several minutes. It had full power when I restarted, giving me room to drive to next exit less than a block away, but lost power again minutes later. I exited on to century Ave, dodging oncoming cars coming at full speed. I pulled to a service station right off the highway.

39 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 10/08/2014

As I was driving my car lost it throttle. The engine continued to run but I had no ability to accelerate. I pulled the car over. Turned it off, then back on and the car appeared to show no issues. About two weeks later the issue appeared again. Same solution. From my research this appears to be a common issue and could very much endanger anyone in the vehicle.

40 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 09/26/2014

Driving on freeway approx 65 mph, no warning, engine completely stops. Thankfully able to drift over to shoulder of exit lane and restarted with no detectable issues. Asked mechanics to run alternator diagnostics - as they said the alternator was the only thing that would make an engine completely cut off. Tested ok. Parked for weekend. Same thing happened on Monday morning. Searched for problem online, found throttle body comments. Called local dealer - service adviser told me it was covered under recall, but appointment setter told me it wasn't. We'll see when I get there tomorrow. Very terrifying experience - I'm lucky I travel at very early traffic times. I don't think I will ever feel safe in the vehicle after reading so many similar stories.

41 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 08/04/2014

I was driving on the freeway going approx. 70 mph and without warning lost all acceleration. I had to maneuver across 4 lanes of traffic to get on the shoulder. I turned the car off and was preparing to call a tow truck when I started the car again and had limited acceleration. I was able to "limp" the car home and to a repair shop. The repair shop said the throttle body needed to be replaced.

42 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 07/28/2014

Driving down road and just quit running.

43 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 06/19/2014

Signs of issue during the occurrence: -car stop running -throttle alarm showed up -transmission alarm showed up -the issue happens approx. 3 to 4 times a month you will need to stop and turn off your engine for a while before you can start driving the car again, the throttle alarm will go away but the transmission stays sometime approximately after 12 hours.

44 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 05/13/2014

The vehicle accelerated quickly from a stopped position upon starting in the morning. I have to put my foot on the brake to keep it from surging forward even though I have not pressed the gas peddle at all. Vehicle jolts forward suddenly during driving at slow speeds and often when starting from a stop. Also sometimes increases acceleration when coasting at a medium speed when no gas has been applied.

45 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 04/19/2014

I was traveling northwest on I 26 when I heard a pop and lost speed and control. I eased over to the right side of the highway and tried to stop. At this time, the car started to shake violently. Eventually the car stopped and would not start again. I had to be towed to newberry and left the car at a garage and rented a car to continue my trip to pick my granddaughter and return to charleston. I had to pay 85. 00 to the tow truck driver, 385. 00 for the car rental and 486. 36 to the garage for the throttle body replacement. Now I find out this has had a recall. If I had been notified, I would not be out nearly $1000. 00, not to mention the safety aspect of this whole incident. I could have been seriously injured or killed.

46 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 04/12/2014

Engine suddenly lost power several countless times during a 300 mile journey on a highway. I almost crashed vehicle during the early occurrences.

47 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 04/07/2014

Loss of power at highway speed, 70 miles per hour, during rush hour traffic. My wife had to pull over to breakdown lane and turn off engine, on I-95 in west palm beach FL area. Wrench light illuminated. Vehicle restarted, after a few minutes waiting at side of very busy highway. Second time this happened within two weeks. Very dangerous situation!!!!!! 2011 Ford Escape ltd 3 l v6.

48 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 03/11/2014

I was driving at 11 pm on a country road, when my vehicle just stopped, I coasted around a corner and put on my flashers. I was in the middle of no where and it was very dark. This is the third time this has happened to this vehicle. I contacted Ford road side emergency service and they informed my vehicle was no longer under warranty for towing and I would have to pay for the wrecker. I had just got the vehicle out of the shop from the Ford dealer for the same problem, which they had for over two weeks because they said they were waiting on a part because they said it was the fuel pump and no one had one so they had to order it. I got the car out that day about 11am, which I had to pay $176. 00, plus over $30. . For a rental for 5 days, that's all they would cover. I had to sat in the dark and rain for two hours waiting on a wrecker in the middle of the road. I am 67 years old and thank goodness my sister in law was with me, because I don't know what would have happened. The wrecker towed my vehicle to Ford and I am waiting on them to open so I can call them so they can tell me what is wrong.

49 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 02/22/2014

The contact owns a 2011 Ford Escape . The contact stated while driving approximately 40 mph, the vehicle jerked violently. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the failure could not be diagnosed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure and current mileage was 44,000.

50 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 01/30/2014

When pressing on the gas the car shifts really hard. Then it seems like there is no get up and go afterwards. The transmission is shifting hard.

51 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 01/28/2014

Pulling out of the driveway of my home, the car surged forward on its own and narrowly missed the neighbor. This surging of the engine on its own is going to cause a death one of these days. Ford really needs to look into this.

52 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 01/02/2014

Driving on a winding, mountainous road the car suddenly lost power and was not responsive to the accelerator. There was no shoulder, so I kept going, very slowly, and then it resumed normal operating responsiveness, only to lose power again. This continued for the 4 miles it took for me to get home. I hoped it was some bad gas and was a one-time event - until it happened again, and I was again able to get home. I am now afraid to drive it.

53 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 12/30/2013

Accelerated from a stop and car lurched and engine seemed about to quit, got "wrench light" and was able to creep to get into parking lot. Took car to dealer and they ran diagnostics on car and said the throttle body needed to be replaced.

54 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 12/16/2013

After intermittent 3 times in 2 weeks, had throttle body cleaned 12/14/2013 per Ford TSB. On this date, 12/16/13 it failed again and had the throttle body replaced at my expense. Ford would not cover it after 36,000 or 3 years as out of warranty. It was an extremely hazardous condition not to replace. This part should be recalled immediately for replacement.

55 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 12/04/2013

While driving down the highway on the way home from work in busy traffic, suddenly the engine came to an idle and a small icon of a ?wrench? lit up on the dashboard. After trying to maneuver through traffic on the busy highway at 5 mph (almost causing an accident) I was able to get to the side of the road. I shut the car off and restarted it, the icon of the wrench was gone and the car proceeded to run fine. I'm reporting this because I have heard this happen to other people and it was caused by a throttle body malfunction. This is an extremely dangerous situation on a busy highway.

56 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 11/19/2013

This is the second time this has happened to me. Both time I was on my way to work. The first time I was going about 45mph turning on the street to my office and the engine dies. I have no power. I am pressing on the gas and nothing. I stop the car and pit it in park. I restart the car and it starts right up. I think OH no big deal maybe I have a bad tank of gas. Maybe the engine was not getting any fuel. Did not think too much into the problem this morning it happens again! except I was going a lot faster and I was on the highway. I am going about 65mph and 10 minute away from work. I am in the far left lane and the engine dies. I instantly panic and need to get over five lanes of traffic. I put my flashers on luckily I still have power for those. I was able to get over on the side of the road before I came to a complete stop. I put it in park and take the key out. Sit there for a minute while I catch my breath because I just crossed 5 lanes of rush hour traffic with a engine that is not on. I put the key in and it starts right up. I press on the gas and I have power again. Why is this happening? I have been reading online about this problem and it sounds like this is happening to a lot of us. Ford is wrong for not coming out with a recall by now.

57 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 11/16/2013

While driving in the middle lane of I 85 the engine turned off. I could not accelerate. The right lane became clear and I coasted the car onto the shoulder of the road. This was a terrifying experience especially at this speed with cars behind me.

58 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 11/15/2013

Vehicle cut off while driving 65mph on highway with no warning.

59 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 11/02/2013

Driving normal speed, without warning, "wrench icon" appears and gas pedal fails to respond. Coast to stop in a parking lot. Shut off engine, restart vehicle and it drives normal for remainder of 2 mile trip. Start next errand and same thing happens. Sounds like the throttle body failure and limp mode that I have been researching online.

60 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 10/30/2013

The vehicle experienced a fuel surge causing a reaction that was not intended by the driver. The car joltedas if one mashed the accelerator then released repeatedly. Once the vehicle came to a stop the car spit and sputtered like bad engine timing. We turned the vehicle off where it sat overnight. It was hard to start this morning and experienced the same problem twice this morning while taking the kids to school. I stopped by an advanced auto parts store where the attendant pulled the service code p2112 throttle actuator stuck closed.

61 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 10/29/2013

Throttle body needed to be replaced driving on the highway at about 65mph, the car gave a small jerk and the wrench icon illuminated, the car appeared to still have power but there was no ability to accelerate. Luckily I was able to move over two lanes of busy, speedy traffic (as there was no left side shoulder) and pull off without causing an accident. I turned the vehicle off then restarted it, it appeared to run okay after that until about 3 miles later the exact thing occurred again. This happened three times on the highway and once I was able to exit it happened once again on a rural road at about 35-40mph. I called for service and took the car in the next day, while on the way to the dealer, the car did the same thing once more - at about 45 mph. This was an extremely nerve-wracking experience, especially while in heavy traffic on the freeway - it could have easily cause an accident and turned out much worse. Once the dealer called me to tell me what the issue was I looked online to see if I could find any information and came across hundreds of other complaints, almost exactly the same experience I had. I feel, based on the number of complaints I have read and the need for so many people to have this part replaced it should be a formal recall by Ford and not something that the consumer has to pay for, as I am now. It's only a matter of time before this situation occurs and causes serious injury or death, if that hasn't already happened.

62 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 10/22/2013

Was driving down the highway at 55 mph and all of a sudden my vehicle would no longer accelerate. Luckily I was able to safely pull over and once I came to a stop I noticed my vehicle was idling rough and would not respond to the throttle and noticed the light with a wrench was also on. I turned the vehicle off and was able to start it back up and make it home and after doing some research this seems to be a very common problem with the Ford Escape. Will be taking to a dealer to see what they can do.

63 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 10/20/2013

While driving on interstate vehicle went into limp home mode. I was able to navigate to the side of the road without incident but could have been seriously injured. After restarting the vehicle everything appears fine. I believe Ford is already under investigation for incidents like this and I wanted to add mine to show the severity of this issue. A recall is needed ASAP.

64 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 10/18/2013

Today on nearby interstate highway, suddenly my throttle pedal acted useless with no power, engine idled down. Throttle pedal useless in any position. Engine outline light came on as well a open end wrench. Wrench warning light in listed in owners manual as "throttle control / powertrain fault, please contact dealer. " I called the Ford dealer service department, he knew pretty quickly the defect I was describing. He informed me that my 2011 Ford Escape is a couple thousand miles over the 3yr 36,000 mile warranty. But he also said I may be covered under an extended emissions warranty. My car is just over 2 years old. This is a dangerous defect in the car which is documented as being under investigation in these NHTSA. Gov websites. Please raise the status of this defect to be an official recall before someone dies.

65 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 10/17/2013

While daughter driving vehicle in houston, driving on freeway, approx. 65 mph, vehicle lost engine acceleration power, no response from gas pedal, warning lights (wrench symbol) illuminated. Had to coast/idle across traffic lanes to get to shoulder out of traffic- very dangerous and scary - turned off engine, restarted, vehicle then operated as normal at the time, but event has since been recurring. Now has happened 6 other times. . . Very dangerous situation for any driver, especially a young driver. Might add that this particular model is very popular with young adults - you will see many in college towns. Very dangerous. Internet research reveals many complaints and probable cause suspected to be throttle body malfunction. Manufacturer must be aware by now. Having car repaired - expecting cost of approximately $600 - $800.

66 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 10/11/2013

I was driving approx. 10 mph, the gas peddle stopped working, I would press it but nothing happened. The little wrench appeared on the dash. I stopped and the motor started running loudly and roughly shaking the vehicle. I put it in park, turned off the key, waiting a moment and restarted it. The restart took longer then normal but it was fine after that. This has happened 5 times now, each time I was going approx. 10-15 mph. It's dangerous because the car cannot driven out of the way of other vehicles. The 3rd time this happened I was slowing turning left through an intersection, there was oncoming traffic, had the car not cut off, I would have been safe to clear the intersection however it cut off making the oncoming driver swerve into the other lane to avoid hitting me. It's very scary and dangerous.

67 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 10/10/2013

At 65 mph in rush hour traffic my vehicle transmission disengaged and my vehicle started coasting. I could not accelerate, the engine vibrated roughly when I tried to accelerate, and I had to pull over to the side of the road. It is my understanding the throttle body stopped working and caused this to occur. The same thing happened 3 more times on this same day. Once at 10 mph, once at 45 mph, and once at 55 mph. Each time I was able to pull over, shut off the vehicle and restart it. The transmission would re-engage and I could continue on my way.

68 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 10/05/2013

Vehicle loses power during operation at various speeds. The engine reverts to idle, revving below 1000rpm. Depressing the gas pedal has no effect on engine rpm or speed. The "wrench" light comes on, but without any code stored. If the car is turned off and then back on, the engine reluctantly starts, and the problem is not present, but the problem soon appears (within seconds). After several incidents today on my way to the auto shop, the "check engine" light came on and I was able to get the code: p2111, "binding throttle body - stuck open" and "tacm open or shorted". Taking the vehicle to the auto shop, they told me the throttle body assembly was not functioning correctly and needed replacement. This is currently being done as the vehicle is unsafe to drive in its present condition. This problem happened once before, about a month ago, and I immediately took the vehicle to the local Ford dealership. They could find nothing wrong, but said it sounded like a throttle or electrical problem, as they have seen numerous problems similar to this. They said there was no stored code for the "wrench" light. They told me the car was safe to drive but to bring the vehicle in if it happens again. At that time they would begin replacing parts until the problem went away as they were unable to diagnose the problem with the information provided, even though they had seen this problem before. This is a dangerous situation, particularly when driving on the highway or crossing an intersection, as the vehicle no longer has power to the drive train and can only coast to a stop. There should be a recall on this defective part.

69 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 09/30/2013

After coming to a near stop, the engine began to surge and the vehicle lurched 6 or 7 times. After touching the throttle, the engine became responsive again.

70 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 09/27/2013

At highway speed, engine and drive train became totally unresponsive on congested dallas freeway. Wrench light came on, no other indications. Vehicle lost all speed and was forced to cross traffic lanes with no motive power to safety lane very nearly causing three different traffic accidents with other vehicles. Totally limp. Once parked, shut off motor and restarted. Engine started and drive train engaged again. Wrench light no longer appeared, no other indicating lamps or errors. Returned to roadway and within 5 minutes same thing reoccurred. Pulled over, restarted engine, drive train reengaged, returned to roadway and exited to side roads to home. Once on the side road, same thing happened again in front of a semi coming up from behind and narrowly Escaped getting hit from behind before pulling over again. Same routine occurred 4 more times before I could get it into the dealership. Last occurrence in addition to the wrench light coming on and off, the engine light came on and stayed on. Vehicle condition is known, reported multiple times and has been investigated by the nthsb already without a recall. This known condition is extremely dangerous to the operators of affected vehicles and to other unsuspecting motorist and the general public. Pressure needs to be applied to Ford motor company to address this matter and notify affected owners and operators of affected vehicles. Today the vehicle is at the dealership and with just a thousand or so miles over warranty, dealer says it is not covered and the estimated $600 repair is my issue.
