1 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem

Failure Date: 08/21/2018

Car shuts down at almost any speed while you are driving. It happens all the time, the engine goes in to limp mode, and it very dangerously forces you to exit the road quickly. We have taken it to 2 very reputable service shops (and paid them to fix it), and they were not able to repair it. Based on the # of reported issues with this problem on this vehicle, Ford needs to quickly fix this and make it right at no charge.

2 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem

Failure Date: 11/09/2015

When driving car going about 45mph. Car shut off and wrench will appear on dashboard . I have been able to coast off the road , shut off car wait for a few minutes and restart car . I am in fear that car will shut off in area where there is no shoulder and I will be hit from behind . There seems to be a pattern building with this same problem , same model, same year .

3 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem

Failure Date: 05/20/2014

Upon starting the vehicle it operates as it should, once the rpm slow to an idle the vehicle will surge and stall at idle. At slow speeds (10-20 mph) the vehicle will surge and stall when the throttle is applied. The vehicle shuts down and steering and braking abilities are minimal, the vehicle will surge at speeds of 45mph however it does not stall at this speed. On the highway at a speed of 70 mph the vehicle will surge slightly, however it is not as noticeable of an event as at slower speeds.

4 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem

Failure Date: 01/10/2014

On 1/10/14 upon pulling onto an exit off of a major interstate as I slowed down the engine shut off. The vehicle had power but the engine shut off on it's own. I put hazard lights on, car in park and started again fine. Again later that evening I was on my way home from work and upon pulling off an exit the engine stalled again. 1/11/14 I drove home on a major highway, came to stop light and engine lost power again. I was able to coast to a stop and park. Engine restarted fine and vehicle proceeded to stall at the next intersection. This to me is dangerous losing engine power. I am afraid this could cause me to be rear-ended if this keeps up. I am seeing the dealer first thing next week.

5 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem

Failure Date: 08/21/2013

At first, while driving, the car would shut down and not respond to throttle movement, a huge safety issue in traffic. After pulling over and restarting the car, the problem seemed to go away for a while. The problem seemed to be intermittent the first few times. Finally the car shut down to an idle and would not respond to throttle movement and the wrench and engine lights came on. The car would only run limp mode. The odb codes read a p2111 and p2112 (throttle actuator control stuck open, and throttle actuator stuck closed) respectively. We had to tow the vehicle to the dealer. We were told that the entire throttle body had to be replaced at a cost of $666. The problem is that the part is unavailable for 2 weeks and maybe up to a month. We have 39000 miles on the vehicle, the warranty ran out at 36000. This issue is also not covered under the power train warranty. This seems to be a widespread issue and I am disappointed that Ford is unwilling to make this right and produce a recall.

6 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem

Failure Date: 07/30/2013

We had our 2011 Escape in the dealership 2 times due to it completely shutting down while driving before they could figure out that is was a failed throttle body (electrical issue). They told us it was "bad gas" every other time. We had our infant in the vehicle when it shut down on the freeway and scared the crap out of us. Thankfully we were able to get away from other vehicles and make an emergency exit from the freeway onto the shoulder until the vehicle came to a stop. Its extremely dangerous and Ford needs to address this and create a recall. I have done research to find so many others with the same exact issue. Our vehicle is in the shop as we speak to the tune of a $500 fix and I just got off the line with Ford customer service to demand a reimbursement. I am waiting to hear back from them to see if they will work with us on the cost. Our vehicle only has 44k miles on it and we had it serviced before the warranty expired and were told everything was fine. We also had it in for service other times for this issue.

7 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem

Failure Date: 06/09/2013

Driving the car we start to excel and the car shuts down due to the throttle body not functioning right.

8 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2013

Driving on interstate at 65-70 mph and engine shuts down. I have to get to the side of the road put in park and restart it. The engine remains running when this happens but only at a idol. And a very rough idol. This happened 4 times last week. Very scary when on interstate! when I turn it off and restart it seems fine until it happens next time.

9 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem

Failure Date: 05/31/2013

I was driving up a hill when my engine shut off and car started lurching forward. The brakes slowed the car down but lurching continued. The car restarted okay but stalled several more times as I was driving it to the dealer. There were no warning lights on and I have always taken great care of the car. There were no odd noises or signs that something was wrong until the car stopped. I am thankful that I was on a neighborhood road and not a busy street or highway. Dealer says the issue is the electronic throttle body which is on national backorder and may take 6-8 weeks to repair. If something is on national backorder, does that mean this is happening to others as well? please investigate.

10 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem

Failure Date: 11/18/2012

2011 Ford Escape engine stalls at random times: I bought the car as a Ford certified pre-owned vehicle in August 2012. In November the stalling issue started. It's happened to me three times now. The car just shuts off and goes into some type of idle mode and a little orange wrench appears on the dash. Two times on the interstate and again one morning coming into work. When it stalled on the freeway I was traveling at 70 mph and had to pull off into the grass -- hit something and blew a front tire. This is definitely a safety issue. After changing the front tire it started right back up but only made it 45 minutes before stalling again (this time at 45 mph and on the right side of the road). Had same stalling issue on the way to work but at a lower speed.

11 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem

Failure Date: 09/07/2012

While sitting at a busy intersection, the engine shut down completely. . . No warning or no indication that there was a problem. I had to put the car in park and restart. A few miles down the road, it happened again. This has happened several other times. Last night, I was traveling approximately 30 mph when it shut down again. I was almost rear-ended by the car behind me. I travel 35 miles each way to work. . . Including some highways where th speed limit is 55mph. I'm afraid it will happen there and I'll be rear-ended by some tail-gater.

12 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem

Failure Date: 08/17/2012

While driving on highway at 60 mph 8/16/2013, my engine shut off. I pulled to side of road. The "wrench" light on dash was on. I called Ford bloomington, they gave me roadside assist # and had me call them to send a tow truck to bring me and my vehicle to Ford for check up. It was ready later that day, was told that they reprogrammed pcm and updated calibration, they changed air filter and told me I was "good to go" I paid $35. 00 for that. The very next Friday, I was driving home (at 60 mph) and the engine died again and I pulled to side of road. Luckily the engine did restart and I was able to make it home. Saturday, I took my SUV to Ford bloomington, engine sputtered on the way there. Ford called rental car for me( without me asking) and again looked at the engine, was told on Monday that the throttle body was bad, needed replaced. They had the part, but it was their last one and that the part was on backorder until October. I had part replaced as it was not covered under warranty, for $500. 00. Also I have a $110. 00 bill from enterprise rentals.
