2 Engine problem of the 2002 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 04/25/2011

April 25, 2001 I drove the car 5 minutes to the local pool and car was parked for about an hour. |tthen drove friend back home from local pool to her house about a 5 minute drive, I then turned the car ignition was off, suddenly there was smoke coming from under the engine compartment area. Tried to open hood, grey smoke billowed out from under the hood, then sparks fell on the pavement from under the car and then flames burst out through the open crack of the hood. The fire seemed spontaneous, there was a burning smell like dirty air just before the smoke started. Fire department, police and ambulance were called. It had never occurred before the car was towed to a local body shop and was taken to another location by the insurance company. I know that recall work was done on the car twice and can verify with the service department. I believe that work was done on the brakes and the gas pedal as instructed in the recall notices. I believe the car is still being examined by the insurance investigators as of may 8, 2011. I have been informed by the insurance appraiser that the vehicle is a complete write off.

3 Engine problem of the 2005 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 04/04/2011

I started my car at work and left to go pick up my daughter, I wasn't driving hard or fast just going slow, and all of a sudden I heard a large explosion, I had to pull my car over because it had become loud and unable to drive. I opened the hood and found that a spark plug had shot out of the hole in the head of my car. The spark plug had actually dented the hood of my car when it shot out. My car has been very very well maintained. This has never hapened before. This is an unsafe and scary experience. They say that it could cost $3500 to $4000 to fix by replacing the head because the threads stripped and Ford knows this is a problem. Ford needs to fix this, before someone does get hurt!.

Have at different times the motor reeves. Sometimes when the cruise is set, and sometimes when it's in park. Never know what makes it happen or when it's going to happen. Do have witnesses at the last time this happened. Happened to be at the scene of an accident, pulled up and stopped, only to have this happen. Which the paramedics happened to hear it and got very concerned. Although it's happened before several times, the emt's strongly urged us to report this.

10 Engine problem of the 2005 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 10/19/2009

Over the past year, my vehicle would occasionally shake, stutter, and hesitate upon acceleration. Each time this happened and I immediately brought it to be serviced by the dealership, it required a new coil pack and spark plug. Depending on which one of 6 failed, the cost for repair varied greatly. I was told that it's not worth replacing all 6 at once, to wait until each individual one showed signs of having an issue or needing replacement. Then, one day, I am driving on the highway at the posted speed of 65 miles per hour, when I noticed the car didn't have as much pep or pick-up as usual. As I was exiting from the left lane onto an on-ramp for a toll, the car completely died. With no warning, no indications, no stuttering as described above, no lights on the dashboard, nothing - it just died. This required all 6 coils and plugs to be replaced (including the 3 new within the past year) in addition to the pcm (power control module). I am told one of the coils/plugs failed, sent out a radio frequency, and caused damage to the entire system.

12 Engine problem of the 2003 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 08/10/2009

My 2003 Ford Escape 6 cyl 2 wheel drive was stopped at a stoplight when the engine suddenly revved to over 4000 rpm for approximately 7 seconds. Fortunately, I had my foot on the brake at the time. Changing from drive to neutral had no effect on the rpms and the engine went back to about 1500 rpms through no action on my part. Afterwards, the vehicle drove normally. I recall that similar occurrences have happened in the past so I wanted to get this information to you ASAP. I do not recall what vehicles were involved at that time. What worries me is if that happens while I am in a parking lot backing out or some other situation where my reaction would be too slow to stop an accident or damage to my vehicle. The vehicle has about 32,000 miles on it and I am the original owner.

21 Engine problem of the 2006 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 10/05/2006

I have had to bring my new car 2006 Ford Escape to the dealer (5xs) where I purchased it for an ongoing squealing problem when the car is started in the morning. Any fixes are temporary and the squeal continues on a new car this should not be happening. . My concern is that is a more serious problem like the transmission and they just are not fixing it, I have a full warranty and now I notice when I put my car in park I still move and I hit the brake but I am in park? my car is going back in again this wed the last time was just a few months ago and they had it for about 5 days. . . This is the last time for me.

23 Engine problem of the 2003 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 10/16/2005

I was exiting off the interstate and around 35 mph my engine completely died and I lost power steering. I was able to make it to the shoulder and restart the vehicle, but the rpms kept bouncing around. I took the vehicle into my local Ford dealer, but they said nothing was wrong with it. I researched online myself and found that Ford had a recall that matched my exact situation/problem. The NHTSA id is 04v165000. Ford said my VIN number was not included in the recall. However, I find it hard to believe that mine should be excluded considering that my vehicle is the same make/model/year/engine type of the recalled ones and my problem matched exactly with what was referenced in the recall. Also my warranty runs out in 2 weeks and I don't want the same problem to happen again and then let the dealer find the problem. It also concerns me because my wife drives my car and I'm concerned about my family.

24 Engine problem of the 2005 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 01/02/2005

Two times when I was driving under slow conditions (in parking lots) the engine on 2005 Ford Escape XLT lurched forward accelatorating on it's own. The first time I had just released the brake as I was turning a corner in a bank parking lot. The engine immediately reved up high and the vehicle "took off". I quickly applied the brakes which after a couple seconds seemed to knock the engine back down to a normal idle. The second time, again I was coasting in a parking lot, attempting to turn into a parking space, when the engine reved up high and the vehicle again took off. I slammed on the brakes and the engine returned to normal idle. But for the luck of no other vehicles or people around when the incidents happend, no accidents occured. I reported the problem and took the vehicle into the dealership service department but because the problem did not occur for the technician, no action was taken. I am reporting this, because I know the problem occurred, not once but twice and it is a very dangerous condition.

32 Engine problem of the 2002 Ford Escape

Failure Date: 03/23/2003

I have a 2002 Ford Escape with 20000 miles on it. On Sunday March 23, 2003 my wife was driving down the highway around 45 miles an hour. She came up to a slower car sow she released the gas. The engine completely shut off. She had to forcefully get off the road trying to avoid an accident. She pulled over and it restarted. She continued cautiously to her mothers house. It didn't happen on the way home. I drove it when she got home and found the idle to be low. It would seem to be running around 4-500 rpms and seemed to be affected while tapping brakes or slowing down some. I have not yet taken it to the dealer.
