The wrench light on the dash comes on and the car will suddenly stall while I am driving it. It just shuts down without warning--no engine problems apparent, like sputtering or any other warning sign. It is scary, as I have almost been rear-ended twice. I put it in neutral and start it, and it starts again without a problem, but it is very dangerous. I have not had the issue resolved by a mechanic.

Engine shuts down in traffic due to engine coolant warning, car has history of this repair starting in 2012, 2014 and 2015 recall repair, September of 2018, I paid $1250 to have coolant sensor repaired only to have engine shut down 2 months later for same problem, this is a serious safety issue since engine literally starts shutting down in traffic so quickly it is impossible to safely pull over. Contacted Ford and they confirmed history of repairs and even had record of repairs but denied responsibility even though it is same 5 repairs and same part.

Car shuts down at almost any speed while you are driving. It happens all the time, the engine goes in to limp mode, and it very dangerously forces you to exit the road quickly. We have taken it to 2 very reputable service shops (and paid them to fix it), and they were not able to repair it. Based on the # of reported issues with this problem on this vehicle, Ford needs to quickly fix this and make it right at no charge.

I have driven this 2013 Escape for 2. 5 years. We have 34,838 miles on it. In the past year the following issues have arisen. 1) heat sensor has gone bad, warning lights and bells signaling a serious problem, as the car shuts down. Car will not start. Replaced twice in 8 months. 2) left passenger door will not close - latch issue as stated in NHTSA recall 16v643. 3) in the past two weeks, the car will stall without any warning. Not overheating. Computer diagnostics show no problem. This has happened while driving on the highway, residential driving with frequent stop signs, pulling onto the highway, in parking lots, a short trip usually does not produce the problem, however, if we are running errands and make more than one (1) stop, we will definately experience the stall during the drive home. Car will coast to a stop, no indication from gauges of any engine issues. Car hesitantly restarts. We proceed with extreme caution, as we do not know when it will stall again, and in what traffic situation. It is at the dealer to have 3 recalls addressed, and they will 'determine' if they can identify the reason for the stall. I have taken the car to another mechanic, who did not get to drive the car until a few hours after I dropped it off. Of course, diagnostic testing produced no results and the mechanic drove the car once, for ten minutes - stall did not occur. Noted that this issue has been record with NHTSA 40 times, and a recall has not been issued. This is a safety hazard. In response to question below, "when did this happen?", I am provided the most recent date: 08/19/2018. (it happens daily). I contact the dealer last week and was told to bring it in 08/20.
Driving on the highway car just shuts down with engine fault car stopped responding making it a real safety issue. I see this has a closed recall already but I don't think they have included all the cars affected.

Experiencing the same exact issues as NHTSA campaign number: 15v813000. Ford keeps looking into this problem but say nothing is wrong with the car. Car stalled several times in live traffic and almost caused a crash. Engine shuts off unexpectedly when driving. The map sensor finally threw a code p0106 and after replacement it ran fine for a day and stalled again which points to the harness. The incidents where it almost caused a crash where when I was on i75 and the car in front of me slowed down, I pressed the breaks and my car lost complete engine power which was very scary.
Engine starts right up just fine and it runs fine until I go to make a stop the engine shuts down. It will start back up but as soon as I put it in drive it will shut down. I can let it sit for a while and it will start to move again just fine. Sometimes I can drive it a week and its fine and sometimes it will do it at ever stop or at a slow yield. I can feel that its about to cut off and I shift it to neutral and it won't shut down but when I change it to drive I have to gun it.
While driving down the highway at 60 mph, the car suddenly and without warning shuts off. I was not able to pull safely over and nearly caused several accidents as this was during my normal morning rush hour commute. It is a very serious safety concern for me. Mechanic said he test drove the car and was unable to experience the sudden shut down. Additionally, this happened on city streets at approximately 35 mph, same thing suddenly and without warning the car shuts down.

The vehicle continuously sputters, and then dies while in driving mode - normally pulling out into traffic. We have been almost hit numerous times. In an hour time span, yesterday, it happened 10 times, today in a 15 minute timespan, 3 times. Am an uber driver and cannot put their lives in jeopardy - going to get someone killed. This happens in all situations - whether idling in line to pull out into traffic at a light, or while driving. Has even happened while traveling down the highway. It starts to sputter, and then just shuts off. Sometimes you can place in neutral and restart, but other times, you must coast to side of street, place in park, and then try to restart. There are 100s of incidences on the internet showing the same symptoms. Please help resolve this. Going to the Ford dealership is not the answer - they tell me they cannot "duplicate" the issue and therefor do not know how to "fix" it. In the meantime, this is extremely unsafe, and a lawsuit waiting to happen. This has been occurring the entire month of December - on the 18th - 10 times in a 3 hour timespan - today, the 19th - 3 times in a 15 minute timespan. This is an everyday issue and getting work. This is preventing using this vehicle as an uber driver, and seriously impacting our income. There needs to be a recall. There is a tech service bulletin - TSB-13-12-12; NHTSA-10054363; dtc po106, po236.
Driving down road on cold snowy day. Coolant arrow went from c to h in less than 5 seconds and engine shut down into safety mode meaning it would not travel over 5 mph. Limped to side of road. Felt engine - cold to the touch. Plenty of coolant in engine and reservoir. Car sat for five minutes. Started car again. Coolant arrow again went from c to h in less than 5 minutes. Car in safety mode again. Towed car to dealer. They could see the code number and "something" happened to the engine. They reset the code and car went out of safety mode. Dealership cannot provide an answer, only it "must be an electrical problem". Searching the web, it appears this model and year Ford has been having the same problem (as described) for several years. Vehicle was in motion when everything went bad. Luckily we were not on the highway and was able to pull to the side of the road. I was given little notice of the safety mode. I wish had I had the code number the dealership said they reset. Thank you.
Abs light and engine light came on while driving and vehicle shut down completely. Towed to shop to have replaced the alternator and battery bad. Since then 3- alternators, 2- batteries, 3- O2 sensors, and an airbag light that blinks on and off and illuminates when you honk the horn on the steering wheel. Also when turning on headlights, all dash lights and stereo console lights dim to almost invisible. Took to 4 different Ford dealerships and no one can figure out the problem!!!! this company should realize this car is a lemon, and back their workmanship. And blow this car up !!!.

I had gotten into my vehicle and after turning it on I managed to make it to my neighbors house. My vehicle for the second time started to over heat and the engine light came on and the vehicle was stating that I need to refill the coolant. I just parked it and the next day we had filled the coolant again taken it to get the error codes checked and were informed we need to get a new thermostat. When taking it to the mechanics they had tried everything from checking codes to driving my vehicle and they were unable to get the issue taken care of due to not being able to re-create the codes. They had informed me that this is a known issue with Ford, however when contacting Ford they have no idea what I am talking about. I checked online and see there is a recall for this, but my VIN even though having the qualifying manufacturing date is not eligible. I have had my vehicle for 1 1/2 years and have had it shut down on me, not have any power, start to put and stall, refilling coolant every so often, over heat, and I can never get a straight answer from the dealership. I have called for information in regards to recalls and these issues and am transferred to a person who is not there so I can leave a voice mail. I have never had a call returned. I just want to know what I have to do to understand what is going on with my vehicle. Why is my VIN not eligible as well?.
The contact owns a 2009 Ford Escape. While driving approximately 45 mph, the vehicle suddenly shut off without warning. After restarting the engine, the vehicle operated normally. The cause of the failure was not diagnosed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified. The failure mileage was 69,000.
When driving car going about 45mph. Car shut off and wrench will appear on dashboard . I have been able to coast off the road , shut off car wait for a few minutes and restart car . I am in fear that car will shut off in area where there is no shoulder and I will be hit from behind . There seems to be a pattern building with this same problem , same model, same year .
Symptom: fuse for interior lights, including gear indicator on shift, controls in steering wheel, fails. Issue began 2nd month of ownership 2/2015. 4th incident on 9/17/15 brought my attention to the circumstances pertaining to all instances leading to failure of the interior lights fuse. Incident: traveling at 55 mph while merging into traffic from the left side of a 5 lane highway, I removed my foot from accelerator. I stepped on the accelerator within a few seconds and the engine shut off, all electrical components, dash board, gauges, everything shut themselves off and then every gauge and warning light lit up, but no engine. I moved the gear selector into neutral and turned the key to off without locking the steering wheel, and tried to restart the vehicle. It did not restart. I made my across 4 lanes of traffic to the right shoulder, stopped the car, put into park and turned the car all the way off and restarted the vehicle, the interior lights no longer worked. The car restarted and I drove on. I realized that every time the fuse for the interior lights has failed, it was after the car had shut itself off, all electrical lights and warning lights had gone off and then all warning lights and lights, except interior lights came back on, requiring turning the key to off engaging the steering wheel lock and restarting the car. It is currently in the shop for evaluation. The 3 previous times, the Ford dealers' (2 different dealers) service department technicians have not found a cause for the fuse failure.

I was driving to work and going around a winding part of the road. I was coasting due to the multiple consecutive turns when my car shut off while going approximately 20 mph. Luckily traffic was light and I was able to shift into neutral and restart my car while coasting. Since this event it has happened approximately 30 times, always around low or idle speeds and more often after running longer. I purchased this car second hand in March of 2015. I have never had such a frustrating problem or unsafe feeling with or while driving a vehicle.
After traveling for approximately 1 mile at 35 mph, the engine suddenly shut off. Upon safely stopping the vehicle in a parking lot. The engine re-started with no issues. Drove the vehicle for approximately another mile at 35 mph when it shut off again. Re-started with no issues. Have not driven the vehicle since then. No fault codes were generated & no apparent problems have been detected.

The added remote start works. However, when you open any door to get in the Escape. . . The engine shuts off. I would think that this would increase the wear and tear on the engine, starter, and the ignition due to the fact that your having to restart the vehicle again.
Car has been giving us an error message "engine fault service now" since we bought the vehicle. Ford has been unable to repair for the life of the vehicle. The car has no started to shut off in traffic. The incident on 12/27 I was slowing down in heavy traffic and the vehicle shut off. Cars where able to avoid us and we were able get the car restarted but it is becoming a hazard to not only us but everyone on the road. Two weeks prior the car shut off while we were at a red light. Ford has been unable to fix and unwilling to work with us on this issue. I have seen comments on line that other people have faced similar problems with the 2013 Escape. We just want the safe working car that we thought we paid for. We have tried everything and been very patient but now it is a safety hazard.
When I put gas in car it is difficult to start, after starting it shut off while driving.
My daughter and I were driving home traveling at approximately 40 mph. All of a sudden without any warning the car totally lost power and I had to coast into a driveway. Had my daughter been driving by herself she would not know how to remain calm and get to the side of the road. Fortunately I have been driving for a long time and knew what to do. Once I turned the vehicle off and back on it ran fine. I thought it was an isolated incidence and thought maybe we had junk in the fuel. The next time I drove the vehicle we were doing 60 mph when it shut down again and this time I was on the freeway next to a semi in heavy traffic and had to turn my emergency flashers on and coast to the shoulder. I had to cut off vehicles in the right lane to get safely to the shoulder. Once again I turned the vehicle off and back on again and went home. My husband did research on the internet and found that there were lots of complaints with identical symptoms and when they went to the Ford dealership were told they knew nothing about this problem. The other people found out that it was the throttle body that needed replacement. We went to the local Ford dealership and asked about it and they played dump and said they hadn't heard anything about it and were actually rude to us. I located a throttle body in stock at a Ford dealership 3 hours away. We picked the part up and my husband installed it. It took approximately 1 hour to replace and cost $207. 22. I have not had a problem since. It is criminal to allow this to go unfixed. It posses a terrible risk to drivers. The throttle body is not just on the 2009-2013 Ford Escape it is also on : 2010-2012 Ford fusion, 2011-2013 Lincoln mkz, 2010-2011 Mercury milan, and 2009-2011 Mercury mariner.
Upon starting the vehicle it operates as it should, once the rpm slow to an idle the vehicle will surge and stall at idle. At slow speeds (10-20 mph) the vehicle will surge and stall when the throttle is applied. The vehicle shuts down and steering and braking abilities are minimal, the vehicle will surge at speeds of 45mph however it does not stall at this speed. On the highway at a speed of 70 mph the vehicle will surge slightly, however it is not as noticeable of an event as at slower speeds.
While driving on highway I accidentally depressed the keyless start-stop button. The engine shut off, power steering and brakes were lost and engine would not restart by pushing start-stop button. I was able to slow car - with other cars close behind- shift gear shift to neutral and apply brake pedal so that start-stop button would restart engine. I have had Ford dealership check keyless start-stop system and they indicate that system works as it should. Start - stop button is located in drivers right knee area and is two inches from similar looking climate control button. Power steering and brakes were lost with engine off and car in motion. I contacted Ford motor company and they referred us to the dealership. This is a dangerous design flaw.

When I brake to slow down the car for a red-light stop the engine shut down before the car was completely stopped. This happened 3 times in the 4/20 week. Ford service couldn't find what's wrong because they couldn't "reproduce" the problem. Another safety issue is the passenger airbag. The airbag-off warning sign always lit up randomly when my son sits in that seat. My son is slightly over 100 lbs. Ford people said he has to sit straight up, which I think is ridiculous and outrageous.
Driving in parking lot fan speed accelerated and then engine shut off. I tried starting again 3 times and the same thing happened. I called aaa and had the car towed to Hyundai dealership in reno where we purchased the car. There was a smell of burning in the engine. The dealer reported the smoke was coming from under the hood of the air compressor clutch coil is internal short cause burning smoke. They recommended replacing the air compressor. Ford said my car is not included in their recall list.
On 1/10/14 upon pulling onto an exit off of a major interstate as I slowed down the engine shut off. The vehicle had power but the engine shut off on it's own. I put hazard lights on, car in park and started again fine. Again later that evening I was on my way home from work and upon pulling off an exit the engine stalled again. 1/11/14 I drove home on a major highway, came to stop light and engine lost power again. I was able to coast to a stop and park. Engine restarted fine and vehicle proceeded to stall at the next intersection. This to me is dangerous losing engine power. I am afraid this could cause me to be rear-ended if this keeps up. I am seeing the dealer first thing next week.
Vehicle's engine cuts out and I lose control. It has happened numerous times and one time the engine shut down three times during a short trip of ten miles. I have to turn the key off and start the engine again. Fortunately we don't travel very fast here.
I recently purchased a 2010 Ford Escape XLT. About 5 days after the purchase, my wife and I came to a stop sign. We started to make a left turn and the car stalled, sputtered, and surged around 600 rpm. A car was coming towards us and almost t-boned our vehicle because we could not accelerate. The wrench light indicating that there was a problem with the throttle body came on. We had to get the vehicle off the road and shut it off. After cranking the Escape again the code cleared and the vehicle drove fine for a little while until this occurred again. I have since cleaned the throttle body but this has not fixed the problem. The Escape has stalled several times since then including while merging onto the interstate at around 50 mph. It just shuts down to about 15 mph out of no where, the throttle body light comes on and it will not accelerate. I bought this vehicle for my wife, but cannot let her drive it for fear of her getting in a serious accident. This is very dangerous and Ford should have a recall on the defective throttle body.
Stopped at light. Got to 20 mph then engine shut off. Coasted 50 feet shifted to neutral restarted car shook, but got me to safety. Got towed. Error code p2112.
My daughter was driving to school on the hwy to school and car shut down completely which lost all power pulled over and tried to restart and had to wait places to me (father) and then it restarted then she drove on to school then she took car on to dealership and dealership performed search and found that it was a throttle body that was going out.
Driving on highway at about 50 mph, sounded like engine shut down and the gas wouldn't work at all. Thankfully, the brakes worked and I pulled over and turned the car off for a few minutes before turning it back on and driving to my mechanic who recommended going to my Ford dealer. They charged me over $500 to replace the throttle body and reprogram the pcm. . . Any recalls from Ford for this?.
At first, while driving, the car would shut down and not respond to throttle movement, a huge safety issue in traffic. After pulling over and restarting the car, the problem seemed to go away for a while. The problem seemed to be intermittent the first few times. Finally the car shut down to an idle and would not respond to throttle movement and the wrench and engine lights came on. The car would only run limp mode. The odb codes read a p2111 and p2112 (throttle actuator control stuck open, and throttle actuator stuck closed) respectively. We had to tow the vehicle to the dealer. We were told that the entire throttle body had to be replaced at a cost of $666. The problem is that the part is unavailable for 2 weeks and maybe up to a month. We have 39000 miles on the vehicle, the warranty ran out at 36000. This issue is also not covered under the power train warranty. This seems to be a widespread issue and I am disappointed that Ford is unwilling to make this right and produce a recall.
Driving on major highway at 60 mph the engine shut off and we coasted to the grassy part of the shoulder. Shut car off, waited 5 mins. Restarted the car. Than it happened several times after that. Took it to dealer and had the throttle body replaced. Thank god were able to pull of on the shoulder each time. Looking on the internet, this has happened many times to several other owners.
On 6/18/2013 I was driving around 45 mph and my Escape's engine/power train completely turned off and I coasted onto the shoulder. I waited a few minutes and it started again. I took it to a garage we use and they could not find the problem. A few days later the engine shut down again when I was driving around 60 mph. I coasted to the shoulder of the highway, waited a few minutes and started it again. On 8/2/2013 the engine shut down once again. This time the engine light came on. I paid over $600 to have the throttle body replaced at this time.
