Vehicle lost power in the middle of traffic, thought it was fuel injectors. Put fuel injector cleaner and better gas but a couple of weeks later. The mechanic said the the idle air control motor was bad. The mechanic did replace it and have the part. The vehicle started doing this around June 1, 2005. Have not contacted dealer.

Complete engine seizure at 17,000 miles. Number 2 and 5 cylinders are destroyed. We changed the oil every 5,000 miles and Ford is fighting us on replacing the engine. After searching NHTSA, I come to realize we are not along. Burt Ford arapahoe had been helpful, providing a rental car for free; however, they have not been forth coming on how many Escapes have had similar problems.

Consumer states that while driving at 35mph on flat surface and no warning the vehicle will shut off and the consumer is force to pull over and it becomes hard for the consumer to control the vehicle. Dealer notified.
Problems with power assist, engine and brakes. Mr.
Vehicle would cut off intermittently while 25-30 mph without any warning. Dealer and manufacturer have been notified. Feel free to provide any further information.
I purchased a 2002 Ford Escape. It currently has 10k miles on it. While going down a hill, the engine stopped, power steering went out and the power brakes didn't work. Luckly I managed to pull over, put the car in park and restart the engine. The same problem, same situation occur a couple of days later. Both times occurred while I was going down a hill at about 30-35 mph. I noticed that the rpm reading when the accellerator isn't depressed is very low. It sometimes dips close to zero. Normal rpm for sitting in idle is around 1. It's currently at the dealership.
This is my 2nd incident in 2 months.
I have owned a 2001 and 2002 Escape both have engines with the same problem - the engine shutting down on a hill going 40 mph, losing brakes and steering leading to a life threatening situation!!.

I was driving in rush hour traffic with the radio on and air only on. I was pressing on the gas and going no where. Then I realized the car just died. I was in the fast lane. There was no where to go so I had to take a left turn and coasted across 2 lanes of traffic. I was in panic as I was just coasting and had no power to move. All the power steering and breakes did not work because the engine was not engaged. It was a very dangerous situation. After I reached the side street, I put on my flashers. I put the vehicle in nuteral. It started and I went home. I am very nervous to drive this vehicle, because if it happens again, I could be in a situation where I could get killed, having no power to stop, advance or turn.
While traveling on highway and without prior warning vehicle will shut down, and willnot restart. Dealership is aware of problem.
Consumer noticed that the power steering was not working as she turned around a bend, and her brakes were not either. (vehicle had turned off without knowledge) consumer feels that this could be very dangerous if vehicle turns off and she is not able to restart it in time to use the brakes. Manufacturer notified.
Engine suddenly stopped while going around clover leaf. Power steering went out along with brakes. Stopped vehicle, immediately restarted and vehicle has been running properly since. Dealer (suntrup Ford) stated they have no idea what could have caused problem and to continue driving and see if it happens again.
Vehicle will shut off at any speed without any notice. Everything will go out like power steering and brakes and accelerator, etc. Contacted dealer, and the dealer was not willing to do anything.
On two occasions, while coasting down a hill near my home, the engine of my 2002 Ford Escape XLT has quit. I discovered this when I tried to accelerate at the bottom on the hill, only to find that the gas pedal didnt respond. On the first occasion, I pulled over and stopped, put the car in park, and restarted it without any problems. On the second occasion, I put the gear selector into neutral and quickly restarted while coasting along. On both occasions, cars in back of me had to brake sharply to avoid collision. Both instances were in April 2002, about three weeks apart. At the time, the car was about 5 months old and had been driven about 5500 miles. I took the car to the dealer on 5/23/02. The invoice says that they performed a wds test, reburned and updated the processor. There is no evidence that new parts were used. Handwritten notes on the paperwork indicate a technical service bulletin was used to guide the repair, but the number wasnt given.
Vehicle(engine)shutdown while driving.
Vehicle cut off twice. But was able to get to the side and put it in neutral and start right up again. This has happened twice. Also, it gives no warning, but it seems to happen when coming down a grade.
This vehicle has suffered complete power failure with no warning on four separate occasions. Speed each time was approximately 40 mph. In each instance, the engine would restart immediately. The car has been checked by a Ford dealer each time but they are unable to duplicate the condition and have made minor electronic/computer adjustments which have not solved the problem. They have advised us to wait for a recall notice from Ford.
2002 Ford Escape XLT, vehicle would not start, engine turned over but soounded like it was going to blow up. After several attempts it finally started. It does this 2 or 3 times a day. Dealer says no problem, it will fix itself. Vehicles engine smoked on two occasions, thought the car was on fire. Dealer says there is nothing wrong. Vehicle will surge on its own, even with the brake depressed, almost as if I had floored it. I cannot drive 20 mph, it surges forward! last incident I had with the vehicle, I lost complete use of the brakes, no hydraulics, no nothing. Pedal depressed right to the floor. Almost got into a head on collision, used e-brake to stop. Happened a second time later that day. Took car to dealership, nothing is wrong. Contacted Ford rep. And they will not do anything to help me. I do not feel safe driving this vehicle. I do not wish to keep the vehicle.
While driving, the engine completed quit running no power, no steering, no lights, radio, etc. I coasted to side of road and put car in park. I then re-started engine and everything seemed normal. I immediately took to dealership who told me there was a 'software glitch' and a chip needed reprogramming from the manufacturer. This problem has not occurred since then. But this could have been a tragedy had I been driving 80 mph down an atlanta interstate; fortunately I was on an access road going 40-45 mph. Dt.
Bought vehicle 11/1/2001. The first time, 1/9/2002 with only 1547 miles, let off of gas, coasting down hill, approx 40 mph, car died, lost power steering and brakes. After coasting to a stop, car restarted. Dealer replaced powertrain control module relay. 2nd time, on 5/3/2002, with 3949 miles, similar conditions, car died, lost power steering and brakes, car restarted after coasting to a stop. Dealer changed the fuel mixture in the computer. I have serious doubts that this has fixed the problem.
Vehicle would not start in grocery parking lot. Towed to dealer. Tow driver said third Escape under 3000 miles he's towed recently that would not start.
While driving at 45-50 mph vehicle will automatically shut off, all lights went out; however, lights on dashboard came on. Contacted dealer, and dealer could find the cause.
My observation of when it occurs is usually when going 50 mph for a number of miles, make a turn then go downhill with the heater on full-speed. About halfway down the hill the ignition nocks out and I must pull over and restart the engine. This has happened to me about 5 or 6 times since I bought my 2001 Escape in April 2001. I've never taken it to the dealership.
Engine suddenly stopped completely, restarting it was impossible. All power was lost and flames were shooting from rear of vehicle. Dealer has been contacted. The consumer stated that this created an extremely dangerous situation in heavy traffic.
While traveling at 25mph consumer slowed down, and when trying to speed up, vehicle started to lose power.
Vehicle stopped running while at speed on the road. Dealer diagnosed problem as a seized engine. The 3. 0 l v6 engine is going to be replaced. Vehicle only had 331 miles on it.
Over a period of four months my Ford Escape has lost all power while driving in the am to work. It was very difficult to handle the car when it lost all power because of the loss of power steering. The first occurrence happened five days after I purchased the car. Ford replaced the idle sensor and said it was fixed. Four months later the problem occurred again. The car had to be towed in. Ford claims that they "cannot replicate the problem" and their engineers don't know what's wrong with it but are aware of the problem in the Escapes. I was offered a trade in at the loss of $6,700. 00 or to call the 800 Ford number and report the problem to them. The 800 number told me to put everything in writing and wait for a response (2-3 weeks). I am now in that stage of my complaint. This is a serious saftey hazard because I live in a city where there is heavy traffic and interstates are close by.
While driving, vehicle completely dies. Lost all steering and power to the vehicle while driving 45 mph. This has happened 4 times now and has been seen at the dealer twice. The dealer is unable to find anything at all wrong with the vehicle!!! all four times it happened had a full tank of gas and the car gave no warning at all.
Over a period of 2 months, the car lost all power during the am drive to work. This occurred on three separate ocassions, almost exactly 7 miles from my home. Going 20-30 miles per hour during each occurrence. Car just loses all power, as well as brakes, steering, etc. Pulled over to the side of the road, turned car off, car starts up, and does not recur for several weeks. Has been back to dealer three times- they cannot replicate, cannot fix. This is an extremely dangerous situation-- I am minutes from the interstate and could become a major problem. Dealer is well aware that this is the last time. We will explore getting a swap from Ford or lemon law if we have to.
While traveling on highway, vehicle will shutdown. Vehicle hesitates on a cold start, when accelerating you get approx. 30 percent acceleration power and then it surges to full acceleration. After the engine warms up it runs well.
While driving at about 35-40 mph, the engine just quits. Once I come to a rolling stop, I have to turn the car off and restart it. This is the second time this has happened.
